• What is Active & Intelligent Packaging?
Active & Intelligent Packaging changing the message:
Not what A&IP can do – but what can it do for YOU!
(and the environment)
BUT! Just to remind you:
What drives Active & Intelligent Packaging development and what it can do
In no particular order…
• CONSUMER ENGAGEMENT – connected packaging, IoT, AR & VR etc
• FOOD SECURITY & SAFETY
• CONDITION MONITORING
• REDUCE WASTE – EXTEND SUPPLY CHAINS
• ANTI-COUNTERFEITING/TAMPER PROOF
• NEW LEGISLATION
• COMPLIANCE
• SMARTPHONE USE
• DEVELOPMENT of NEW MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGIES
• COST REDUCTION/SCALABILITY
Food Waste
Recycling
• Energy
• Materials Materials
Four main target groups:
Food
Beverages
Pharmaceuticals
Personal Care & Cosmetics
This does NOT exclude everything else…like Apparel
Augmented Reality vs Virtual Reality VR involves creating a totally artificial
environment

FOOD SAFETY & SECURITY: What are the issues? • More Demand for ‘fresh’ = more hygiene/contamination risks •Counterfeit food (e.g. Meat and Fish) products •Complex Supply Chains from ‘Farm to Fork’ •Investment in New Technologies can be slow • ‘Sell By’, ‘Use By’, ‘Best Before’ labels – what do they mean? •Discounting perishable items seen as normal •Retailer’s Resistance to change •Cost of additional packaging •Lack of Consumer understanding and education • Invisibility of Technologies

SECURITY – coming up with the uncopyable tag!
-University of Copenhagen
-The problem: counterfeiters learn how to copy the security tags
-Laser-printed QR codes on paper and then spray physically unclonable functions (PUF) patterns on the surface.
-‘throwing a handful of sand at the surface’
-10,000 tags generated to validate the technology via smartphones
Anti Counterfeit and Tamper Proofing of Grand Cru Wine
-Toppan Printing create a brittle NFC tag with NXP chip
-Cachet-Tag™ - antenna circuit breaks when removed

-NFC authentication code
-information differs for
each individual product
-Selinko data store and
Grey Market information
SECURITY, TRACEABILITY: Schreiner BitSecure
• Digital authentication of pharmaceutical packaging with smartphone app
• Pattern size only a few square millimetres
• Copying causes loss in precision and optical details which can be reliably detected with smartphone app or handheld reader
DSCSA & FMD
BUT WHAT NEXT?
CLARITY of INSTRUCTIONS: SpeechCode

Some or all of these are interconnected
WHAT IS Blockchain?
A blockchain is, in the simplest of terms, a time-stamped series of immutable record of data that is managed by cluster of
computers not owned by any single entity. Each of these blocks of data (i.e. block) are secured and bound to each other using
cryptographic principles (i.e. chain)
In 5 -10 years everyone in the Retail sector will be using it to secure their supply chains
Arc-net & whisky distillery
Adelphi Ardnamurchan:
• Fully traceable from field to bottle through blockchain
• Uniquely marked and authentication of each bottle
• Spirit market in Scotland alone worth about £5.5 billion ($7billion)
• “Retailers increasingly weighing up blockchain as a way to reduce risk, ensure transparency and manage supply chain authentication and security.”
