Real estate magnate Charles Kushner has reportedly reached a settlement with his older brother, who had claimed in a lawsuit that his sibling misused funds from their family business for personal and political purposes. The StarLedger of Newark, citing three unidentified sources close to the brothers, reported Thursday that the deal was reached this week. It calls for Charles Kushner to pay an undisclosed price to buy out his brother's estimated 20 percent interest in the family's Florham Parkbased Kushner Companies. In return, Murray Kushner and Robert Yontef, a former accountant at Kushner's management company who had filed a similar suit against Charles Kushner, have agreed to drop their respective litigation. Most of the money involved in the settlement has been deposited into an escrow account, the sources said, and the deal stipulates that it would be released in January. Kushner Companies, believed to have at least $1 billion in assets, owns and manages numerous buildings and other holdings, including rental apartments, shopping centers and a hotel. However, the sources said Yontef was not part of the brothers' settlement, and it was unclear why he dropped his suit. It also was unclear whether deal would affect an ongoing federal probe of Charles Kushner that was based on allegations included in the lawsuits. Michael Drewniak, spokesman for U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie, and Charles Kushner would not comment on the report. Kushner referred all questions to his spokesman, Howard Rubenstein, who would neither confirm nor deny the settlement. Yontef and Murray Kushner were not immediately available for comment. Charles Kushner has contributed millions of dollars to state and federal political candidates in the past five years and is a top donor to Gov. James E. McGreevey. The governor appointed Kushner to a seat on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's Board of Directors last year, but he resigned after the probe into his activities became public.
