When Given a Second Chance, Take ItIt was mid-September 2003

and I was walking through the magnificent New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square. While being whisked up to one of the higher level suites in the glass fu-turistic elevator pods, the feeling that I was somewhere special and about to embark on an important mission made me proud, as well as intrigued. I was on my way up to the meeting room of the Greater New York Dental Meet-ing (GNYDM), the largest and most respected dental congress and convention in the United States, if not the world.

I was attending my first meet-ing as a member of the GNYDM Organization Committee. There I would join with other committee appointees, the number of which were evenly divided by member-ship in the dental components which owned the meeting — New York County Dental Soci-ety and Second District Dental Society. I was also to work with the GNYDM staff and GNYDM Executive Director Dr. Robert Edwab, who I knew by reputa-tion were accomplished and effec-tive in carrying out their charge. Wow, was I psyched! What, I thought, could I bring to the table to continue the great tradi-tion of running this world-class operation like the dental giants who had served in this capacity before me?

I had been attending the GNY-DM since I was a dental student in the early 1980s. Through a classmate of mine who was friendly with then GNYDM gen-eral chairman Dr. Anthony Di-Mango and his wife, Mrs. Muffy DiMango, I was invited to attend a function in the GNYDM gen-eral chairman’s penthouse suite hotel room during the Meeting. After seeing the accommoda-tions, the high level of profes-sionalism and comradery and being warmly welcomed by Dr. and Mrs. DiMango and some of

the other doctors present, I knew then that one day I would love to be a part of the GNYDM family.

At that first meeting in 2003 they got right down to work. I immediately saw that being on this committee was not going to be an easy walk in the park. I was about to begin my year as president of the SDDS. I was an active member of the Board of Governors of the New York State Dental Association and the chair of the SDDS Peer Review and Quality Assurance Committee, an appointment which meant that I also sat on the New York State Dental Association (NYS-DA) Council on Peer Review and Quality Assurance. At the time, I was also becoming active with the Washington Leadership Con-ference of the American Dental Association, being trained to be an advocate and voice for our pa-tients, practices and profession, a role which involved visits to Cap-itol Hill to lobby as a member of the ADA.

These duties I carried out along with my personal ones, which included a full-time private prac-tice and my family obligations of raising four young sons with my wife, Kathleen. I was also active politically in my town, having been named as founding chair of the Marlboro Township Eth-ics Board in New Jersey. It was a five-year appointment by the then newly elected Republican

Mayor, to which I was subse-quently reappointed to a second five-year term by the then elected Democratic mayoral successor. Lastly, I was also coaching my sons’ athletic teams concurrently. Even for me who is used to keep-ing up a busy professional and personal lifestyle, I sensed that the timing of my appointment to the GNYDM was not going to be consistent with being an ef-fective member due to the many other competing professional and family obligations.

After two meetings and much introspection, I informed the SDDS that I needed to with-draw from the appointment to the GNYDM. I thought that I would feel better having one less important activity on my busy monthly schedule. The feeling was short-lived and was soon re-placed by remorse and regret for what I knew I would be missing. But the decision was mine and I had to live with it. The feeling never lessened over the 10+ years.

Fast forward to the year 2014. Imagine, if you will, the feeling of renewal and excitement I felt when then SDDS vice president, Dr. Mitchell Mindlin, called me to tell me that I was being con-sidered for appointment to the GNYDM for the 2015 Meet-ing warmup year which, as the representative from my beloved SDDS, would lead to a four-year appointment as a voting member of the GNYDM. Not personally knowing Dr. Mindlin as well as I did many of his predecessors, I was impressed by his level of professionalism and determina-tion to appoint a suitable and qualified person to fill the posi-tion. I was one of three potential candidates being considered. I gave it my all during the tele-phone and in-person interview with Dr. Mindlin. In summary, I assured him that now was a great time in my professional and per-sonal life to take on the job and

that he would not regret in any way selecting me for the position. After a month or two, Dr. Mind-lin called me again and told me that he was appointing me to the GNYDM Organization Com-mittee based on my years of prior service to organized dentistry, as well as my known excellent repu-tation amongst my dental peers. I felt newly energized and very fortunate to be the one selected.

Although I now maintain two dental practices in New York and New Jersey and volunteer as a clinical assistant professor at New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD), teach-ing other dentists in a one-year CDE certificate course called “Full Mouth Rehabilitation, Oc-clusion, Implants and Esthetics,” I still have time to serve in or-ganized dentistry. Our boys are grown up now and don’t need as much parenting time from Kath-leen and me. I know that the time is now right for me to serve and cherish the opportunity to be part of the dental convention that in 2015, attracted over 54,000 at-tendees from more than 133 dif-ferent countries, 19,000 of whom are dentists just like me. We are expecting similar attendance for our upcoming 2016 Meeting.

Kathleen, my wife of 30 years who manages and administers both of our practices, is fully sup-portive of our being an active part of the GNYDM. She is a member of the always gracious and wel-coming Hospitality Committee. She too loves the opportunities to meet new people and travel, as well as the fine folks with whom we get to work and socialize. Our youngest son Brian is a dental stu-dent in his second year of study at NYUCD. He reminds me so much of myself 33 years ago. I can’t wait for this year’s Meeting when I invite him up to see our excellent General Chairman Dr. Marc Gainor’s suite and he shakes

Thoughts on the GNYDM: Reflections of the 2017 GNYDM General Chairman -Elect

by LAURO F. MEDRANO-SALDAÑA, D.D.S.

I first assisted the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) as a dental student in 1991. After graduating, I began the residency program at Lutheran Medical Center. I then joined the SDDS, volunteered at the GNYDM and was eventually appointed by the SDDS Board of Trustees to a four-year term as a GNYDM committee member. For the next four years, I helped the Meet-ing by working on multiple committees — essays, seminars, workshops, outreach, registra-tion — and creating programs in different languages.

After completing a four-year term as an organization com-mittee member, I continued as a troubleshooter. During this three-year term, I was able to enhance the foreign language and inter-national outreach programs and was later appointed as a special troubleshooter and international outreach chair. After serving on all positions in the GNYDM, I was eligible to run for general chairman. I’m glad I decided to run, because the outcome was fa-vorable and on January 1, 2017, I will begin my two-year term as the general chairman-elect of the GNYDM.

There were other leadership positions which helped prepare

me for being GNYDM general chairman. At the national level, I served as a team action leader for the American Dental Politi-cal Action Committee (ADPAC), as well as a delegate and council member on governmental af-fairs. I graduated from the ADA’s prestigious leadership institute, served on the Board of Trustees of the Hispanic Dental Associa-tion and was past president of the Puerto Rico Dental Association, USA.

As general chairman-elect, we will be facing challenges despite our best efforts. For instance, we have realized that young dentists do not attend the Meeting. Hav-ing younger dentists at the GNY-DM will favor us in the future and at the same time, will ad-dress another challenge we face, which is increasing attendance to over 50,000 attendees. Secondly, we know that we do not have enough volunteers for the Meet-ing. More volunteers will aid in making activities at the Meeting run smoothly. The merger of den-tal companies makes it more dif-ficult to maintain our exhibitor attendees.

Lastly, many dentists do not join organized dentistry, but they do attend our Meeting. The GNYDM is a great place to en-

gage these dentists and help usher them into organized dentistry, which is something from which we will all benefit. In the past years, we were not prepared to face these challenges, and so this

is where I will place my focus as general chairman-elect.

My number one goal is to boost Meeting attendance to 60,000. The second is to strengthen our partnerships with international dental organizations, and the third goal is to produce the first Spanish-language live dentistry arena.

I believe that our outreach must collaborate with the New York State Dental Association and the ADA in order to cre-ate a yearly program for dentists who have been in practice for 10 years or less. Expanding our out-reach programs by attending two more domestic and international meetings will result in more at-

We Are No Longer in Kansas: A Newbie at the GNYDMby MANOJ K. JAIN, D.D.S., M.B.Ch.B., M.H.A.

For the first time last year, I attended the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM). I had always heard great things about the Meeting but my first-hand experience was unforgetta-ble. The sheer size of the venue, vendors, courses and attendees was overwhelming for a new at-tendee.

When I first arrived at regis-tration, I was surprised to find a long line of attendees waiting to get their meeting passes. I was unable to use an automated ki-osk to obtain my pass because my registration had an error. One of the many volunteers present guided me to the correct regis-tration line. Fortunately, the reg-istration line moved quickly and I was able to make my way to the exhibitors.

Despite having a map of the exhibition hall I was at a loss as

to where to begin. Being a sim-ple guy, I started at the entrance, however, this strategy proved ineffective as the sheer volume of products on display required more time than I had intended to spend. I quickly realized that I would have to carefully pick the vendors in which I was most in-terested.

I was not expecting to see vendors from different countries as I thought this was a national meeting. What was more surpris-ing was that some countries had a whole section of rows dedicated to their dental industry. The other aspect of the meeting that amazed me was the number of foreign at-tendees and the numerous events scheduled to welcome and cater to them.

Any product or service even re-motely related to dentistry was to be found here. Everything from

banking, office management, clinical supplies to even cloth-ing was all here. This not only applied to products but to the plethora of seminars and work-shops that were available. All of this occasionally overheated my gray cells and I had to cool them down with a refreshing drink from the food court.

I knew my life was changing for the better when, for the first time in my life, I won a raffle. Having never won a lottery, raffle or prize, I could not contain my excitement when I won a product with a market value of $600. It seemed the gods had compensat-ed me for wearing out my leather soles with all the walking I did during the Meeting!

I occasionally managed to break away from the exhibitors to attend a couple of seminars and visit the poster presentations.

During this time, I was able to make new acquaintances not only from the United States, but from a few other countries. The poster presentations were of high scien-tific quality and opened my mind to areas of research and clinical work that I alone would not have been able to imagine.

One additional note I would like to add is that while being a dental resident in New York has many benefits, the best one is being able to attend the Greater New York Dental Meeting. As a resident, I am able to attend not only the Meeting but any course/seminar offered during the Meet-ing for free. I cannot express enough gratitude to the organiz-ers for this benefit that is invalu-able to residents, as it allows us to supplement our learning ex-periences outside our residency

On September, 29, 2016 SDDS held a reception for its new dentist members, a membership category comprised of dentists in hospital residency programs and dentists who graduated within the past 10 years. Dubbed the “End of Summer Soirée,” the event was held at Fornino’s in beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn Heights. Approximately 70 new dentists, including residents from over 10 hospital programs, braved the rainy weather to enjoy an evening of deli-cious brick-oven pizza, beer, wine and socializing.

Thank you to all who attended!

NYSDA/F Sponsors NYS Veterans' Smile Day

All U.S. military veterans qualify for this exciting program, which shows organized dentistry’s commitment to giving back to the men and women who have served their country. It’s patriotic. And it’s completely volunteer-driven.

Veterans' Smile Day is a pro-gram that encourages dentists to screen and treat veterans (and/or their families) in their offices on a designated day or days on or around Veterans Day (Novem-ber 11th).

General dentists can invite specialists to work with them in their offices. Dentists make diag-noses and determine what treat-

ment they can provide on their designated Veterans' Smile Day – nothing more, nothing less, than what you, the volunteering dentist feels, comfortable doing.

What makes Veterans' Smile Day unique is that participating dentists determine exactly what they would like to do. They can limit their volunteerism to one day, or extend it to more. They can decide to treat veterans only, or include members of the veter-ans’ immediate families. They can choose to deliver basic cleaning and examinations, or they can embark upon more comprehen-sive treatments.

New York State Dental Asso-

ciation/New York State Dental Foundation (NYSDA/F) staff is working with agencies like The American Legion, American Red Cross and Veterans of Foreign Wars to spread the word to vet-erans in need and to coordinate visits by these veterans to partici-pating dental offices. “Many peo-ple don’t realize that, unless they are 100 percent disabled or have service-related injuries to their mouths, our veterans do not re-ceive dental care benefits through the Department of Veterans Af-fairs,” states NYSDF Executive Director Laura Clark Leon. “We are incredibly honored to be able to help deliver oral health care

to our men and women in uni-form.”

For more information on Veter-ans Smile Day, including how to get involved, go to www.nysden-talfoundation.org.

day was over and I had failed in my mission to cover everything I had intended. The only evidence of my hard work was invoices placed for products and a couple of bags full of goodies bursting at the seams. Unwilling to accept defeat, I decided to allocate one more day in my busy schedule to

conquer the GNYDM.This year I mean to plan a dif-

ferent strategy so that I can capi-talize on the many opportunities the Meeting has to offer. If you happen to run into me, please do help me carry my bags of freebies.See y’all there!

Thoughts on the GNYDMtendees and exhibitors. We must also work closely with our two sponsoring components, Second District Dental Society and New York County Dental Society, to collaborate with dental schools in close proximity to New York City.

My accomplishments would not be possible without the tire-less efforts and the support of my family: my wife Carmen, who is an active member of the GNY-DM Hospitality Committee; my

daughter Valerie, a third-year medical student at Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, who is currently doing clinical rota-tions at Chicago’s Jackson Park Hospital; and my son Douglas, who graduated from Pennsylva-nia State University and has re-cently started working with W.B. Mason.

Dental/Legal Considerations in Private Practice: One Expert Dentist's Perspec-tive*Featured Clinician: MICHAEL L. CALI, D.D.S.Clinical Assistant Professor, New York University College of Dentistry

CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE #2016-28Dyker Beach Golf Course, Brooklyn, NY Friday, November 4, 2016 ◆ 9 A.M. - 4 P.M. ◆ MCEU - 6 HOURS

*Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dr. Dean Vafiadis, who was previously scheduled to appear as a co-presenter, has been replaced by Dr. Michael Cali. Please see course synopsis below for updated lecture details.

NOTE: This course features multiple speakers and topics. Attendees MUST stay for the entire duration of the program to receive continuing education credits. Partial credit will NOT be issued.

PART ONEDental/Legal Considerations in Private Practice: One Expert Dentist's Per-spective by MICHAEL L. CALI, D.D.S.This course is intended to introduce practitioners to the potential legal consequences of the dental care they provide to their patients. Third parties such as the legal system and lawyers, licensing boards, peer review committees and insurance companies are all entitled to review the care we provide our patients. Concepts for successfully defending our treatment, if and when we are upon to do so, will be discussed, thereby helping to ensure a successful and favorable out-come for the dentist. Real life case scenarios demonstrating dental/legal concepts will be presented. Ample time will be allowed for ques-tions from the course attendees.

Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will become more aware of the legal consequences of their dental actions. This awareness will lead to fewer lawsuits and better treatment outcomes for their patients. PART TWOChallenges in the Restoration of the Worn Dentition by THOMAS G. PLANZOS, D.M.D.The patient with worn dentition will usually present with a multitude of problems in addition to exhibiting different patterns of tooth wear. Some patients have localized wear limited to the anterior teeth with or without corresponding tooth eruption. Others show abnormal wear of the entire dentition with loss of vertical dimension of occlu-

sion. This presentation will review several full mouth rehabilitations and will invite attendees to participate in the examination, diagnosis and treatment planning. The sequence of treatment and final out-comes will be discussed in detail. Case reviews will be limited to pa-tients who are free of symptoms associated with temporomandibular disorders. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will diagnose and recognize the etiology of tooth wear, analyze the type of wear, become familiar with different modalities of treating the worn den-tition and select from appropriate materials available to restore the worn dentition.

Oral cancer survival rates have not improved over the last 50 years. Why? Because we are not “seeing” the development of oral cancer until it becomes “frankly” apparent under our usual visible light ob-servations. To further complicate this challenge, the classic popula-tion of at-risk oral cancer patients has changed over the last few years and suddenly the possibility of developing oral cancer is not just lim-ited to tobacco users and people over age 40. Various technologies have been developed over the past 20 years and new ones are being developed. Each one aims to provide the ultimate goal: to help im-prove our ability to identify potential lesions well in advance of them becoming deadly. Some are more effective than others in this fight against cancer and new technologies are being developed.

Upon successful completion of this lecture, participants will have learned:

• The oral anatomy and proper examination of the patient• The challenges our profession has had in effectively identifying

cancer in its earlier stages• The various technologies currently available that can help in this

identification, with the aim of allowing practitioners to identify potentially cancerous lesions before they can become cancerous, thus improving the odds of patient recovery

• What types of identification systems we may be employing in the near future

Complex Bone Grafting for Predictable Implant Placement (Part 2)*Featured Clinicians: David C. Hoffman, D.D.S.Director, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Staten Island University Hospital

LYDIA LAM, D.D.S.Staff, Staten Island University Hospital

*This lecture is the second part of a two-part series. Part one of the lecture was presented at the RCDS membership meeting on March 15, 2016.

In today’s oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, one is faced with treatment planning many different types of cases that will eventu-ally involve the placement of dental implants. The days of placing implants “where the bone is” are long gone and today’s practitioners must be able to place dental implants based on a restoratively driven treatment plan. On many occasions, patients present with anatomi-cal situations that prevent the placement of dental implants without extensive bone regeneration procedures. These procedures can vary from something as simple as an extraction and socket grafting, to extensive ridge deformities requiring advanced techniques such as BMP/Infuse guided bone regeneration to computer-guided implant placement with concurrent bone regeneration and immediately loaded restorative prosthesis.

This two-part lecture series, presented by Drs. Mark Stein, David Hoffman and Lydia Lam, will cover intraoral bone regeneration technique starting from simple socket grafting and extending to full arch reconstruction. Participants will leave the lecture with an un-derstanding of what is involved in the evaluation of potential bony defects to the coordination and treatment planning of full arch re-construction cases which involve both bone regeneration and simple implant placement.
