Novocaine celebrates 85 years In 1905, German chemist Dr. Albert Einhorn discovered an anesthetic which revolutionized pain control in both dentistry and medicine -- Procaine, or, as it is more commonly known, Novo- caine. This synthetic anesthetic replaced the widely used but highly addictive, cocaine. While the anesthetic action of Novocaine is similar to that of cocaine, it is far less toxic.
