NEWS Visits to the dentist

A recent government survey shOWS that nearly half the popula- tion does not seek dental care. Data from the 1983 National Health Inter- view survey was released by the Na- tional Center for Health Statistics. During that year, Americans went to dentists more than 400 million times, an average of almost two u per person, according to the survey results. Overall, 45 percent of the population, or 100 million per- sons, had not seen a dentist in more than a year. A majority of the children aged 2-4 and a significant portion aged 5-11 had never been to a dentist, while in older age groups, a significant portion were enden- tulous and hadn't received dental ~are within the year. For every age group twelve and older, females were more likely than males to have seen a dentist in the past year, and !n every age group, whites were more likely than blacks to have had s recent dental visit. The portion of the population with dental visits in the past year increased significantly ~tith higher income. Less than two- fifths of persons with incomes below $10,000 had recently seen :lentists compared with three- Iourths of those with $35,000 or higher incomes.
