Assignment briefLearning Outcomes andAssessment Criteria 2017-18
Maths, Physics and Engineering Standardisation event – 6 December 2017
Sample number 1: Unit title: Physics – RC1/3/AA/04G
Overview of assessment taskThis assignment contains a practical exercise involving the building of a circuit froma circuit diagram and then utilising components to make measurements to ascertainthe unknown resistance of a resistor. This assignment also has a series of questionson problem solving skills involving the topic of electric current.
Learning outcomes and assessment criteria
Learning Outcomes Assessment Criteria
6. Be able to identify a range ofelectrical component
6.1. Recognise, and name, commonelectronic components and theirassociated circuit symbols
7. Be able to employ practical circuits toinvestigate current
7.1. Analyse given circuit diagrams (bothseries and parallel) involving nomore than ten electrical components
7.2. Demonstrate series and parallelcircuits from given circuit diagrams
7.3. Utilise ammeters and voltmeters withappropriate scales to measurecurrent and potential difference (p.d.)using units and S.I. prefixesappropriate to the readings
7.4. Calculate frequency and peak-to-peak p.d. from an oscilloscope trace
8. Understand current electricity andrelated formulae
8.1. Explain charge and the coulomb8.2. Explain electric current as the flow of
charged particles, Q = It8.3. Explain that current is the rate of flow
of charge, and use the equation Q =It (or I = ΔQ/Δt) in calculations
8.4. Explain potential difference and thevolt
8.5. Use V = E/Q in calculations8.6. Use P = VI and P = I2R in
calculations8.7. Explain resistance and the ohm8.8. Recall and apply Ohms Law, V=IR8.9. Calculate the combined resistance
for two, or more, resistors in seriesand/or parallel.
