Assignment 5: Language Give advice to a new teacher in your school Some schools use a ‘buddy system’ when a new teacher arrives. The new teacher’s buddy is usually another teacher who has worked at the school for a long time and knows all the rules and procedures. The buddy’s responsibility is to help the new teacher quickly settle into the school by giving advice. Imagine a new teacher has arrived in your school and you are going to be their buddy. You are going to write him/her an informal email giving advice. You should include: 1. How you felt when you were a new teacher at your school (see module 2 – past tenses) 2. A range of modal verbs (should (n’t), must(n’t), (don’t) have to – (see module 3 – making suggestions) 3. Some information things you wish you had known when you started working at the school (see module 9 – wish/ if only) 4. A suitable style for an informal email to a colleague (see B2 Self-study part A – Festivals) 5. A suitable layout for an email 6. Reasons for each piece of advice Write 150-200 words. Add your text to the box below: Hi John, It's a pleasure to have you in our school. Remember John; try not to be too nervous on your first day. As for mine, it was horrible. I was so anxious and edgy until I sweated profusely. I wish I had asked my mother to wake me up that morning since I was late. Worse still, daunted by the big day, I forgot to take my breakfast and I left my wallet. If you don't do well on the first day, that doesn't mean you should quit teaching. You mustn't be intimidated by that. You must meet the principal once you are there since it's a common way to show on your respect towards the principal. If only someone had told me this before, I won't be arguing with the principal on how to be friendly.I really think you should come early to organize yourself through out for the day. © The British Council, 2012 The United Kingdom’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. Hi John,

It's a pleasure to have you in our school.

Remember John, you should smile and let the students know that you are easy-going and affable teacher. It will lead you to have a good expectation and presumption from other people as well. I am looking forward to seeing you this Monday with a smile on your face.

Best wishes,

Luqman
