ASSIGNMENT 4 POST-GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND
LAW (PGDUEML)

Dear Participant, Assignments are a part of your continuous evaluation process. The main purpose of
assignment is to test your comprehension of the learning material you receive from us and
also to help you understand the course aspects. Every participant must submit a total of five
assignments, one for each theory Course.
The submission of assignments is compulsory and ‘only soft copy’ has to be emailed to
Ms.RamyaIyer at [email protected]. Assignment scoring will be included in final result.
Each course will have one assignment and will carry 40% weightage. The assignment has to
be submitted within a certain time span (as indicated below), failing to submit the
assignment on or before last date will amount to negative grading.
Please try and put the solutions to below questions in your own words instead of indulging
in mere cut, copy paste from other sources. The questions in the assignments are mostly
analytical band descriptive which will enable you to understand and comprehend the
concepts better.

COURSE 4: Urban Legal and Policy Frameworks

Note: All questions are compulsory.
Answer each question in 1000 words each. Each question carries 8 marks. (5x8 = 40)
1. Explain with examples, the difference between: a) Disaster preparedness and disaster relief b) Freedom from fear and freedom from want
2. What are Urban Natural Resources? Elaborate on this statement, “Inflation comes less from bad economic management than from bad resource management”.
3. What are green buildings? Do these buildings cost more than their conventional counterparts? Even with a tight budget, is it possible to incorporate green building measures so as to utilise minimal or zero increased up-front costs?
4. What is the role of nature and natural infrastructure in protecting coastal communities in your country from some of the impacts of climate change? Explain with relevant case studies.
5. A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a site that has been nominated for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's International World Heritage program. The program aims to catalogue and preserve sites of outstanding importance, either cultural or natural, to the common heritage of humankind. There are 30 recognized World Heritage Sites in India as of 2013. What does it mean for a site to be inscribed on the List? Does the enlistment of a site in the list is limited to receiving status and prestige, or does it ascribe other privileges as well?
