Due on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014

    1. Knowing that the couple shown acts in a vertical plane, determine the stress at (a) point A, (b) point B.

  • 2. Two vertical forces are applied to a beam the cross section shown. Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses in portion BC of the beam

  • 3. Two equal and opposite couples of magnitude M=25kNm are applied to the channel-shaped beam AB. Observing that the couples cause the beam to bend in a horizontal plane, determine the stress at (a) point C, (b) point D, (c) point E.

  • 4. A milling operation was used to remove a portion of a solid bar of square cross section. Knowing that a = 30mm, d = 20mm, and all = 60MPa, determine the magnitude P of the largest forces that can be safely applied at the centers of the ends of the bar.

  • 5. The tube shown has a uniform wall thickness of 12 mm. For the loading given, determine (a) the stress at points A and B, (b) the point where the neutral axis intersects line ABD.

  • 6. The couple M is applied to a beam of the cross section shown in a plane forming an angle with the vertical. Determine the stress (a) point A, (b) point B, (c) point D.
