Assessment in
SRS
Why doe we assess the children?
▸ To find out what pupils know
▸ To provide next steps
▸ To help us modify plans to address gaps/misconceptions in pupils’ learning.
▸ To provide feedback
▸ To find out what pupils don’t know and teach those areas.
▸ We assess individual pupils, whole class, year group and whole-school in
order to provide the best education for all.
Assessment in SRS
▸ Teachers make their judgment
based on three key aspects:
▸ Ongoing formative assessment
▸ Assessment against the
curriculum objectives – point in
time statement sheets for
guidance
▸ Summative assessments
(internal)
▸ GL assessments (external)
▸ CAT4s (Year 2, Year 4)
Assessing against Curriculum Objectives
GL Progress Tests
ENGLISH & MATHS
▸ All children in Years 1 to 10 will be
taking Progress Tests in English and
Maths as their end of year tests in
May/June.
▸ Year 1 and 2 will be taking these as
paper tests and all other tests will be
online.
SCIENCE
▸ All students in Years 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and
10 will be taking online Progress Tests
in Science in May & June.
▸ There is no Year 7 Science test, as the
Year 8 test combines the objectives
covered in Year 7 and 8.
PROGRESS TESTS
▸ The aim of the tests is to assess the
curriculum content and skills taught
throughout the year.
▸ As with any test, paper or online, not all
elements of the curriculum can be
assessed within one assessment; a selection
of the expected content and skills will be
assessed.
PROGRESS TESTS
▸ PTE/PTM 6 – Year 1
▸ PTE/PTM 7 – Year 2
▸ PTE/PTM/PTS 8 – Year 3
▸ PTE/PTM/PTS 9 – Year 4
▸ PTE/PTM/PTS 10 – Year 5
▸ PTE/PTM/PTS 11 – Year 6
MATHS – YEARS 1 & 2
ENGLISH
▸ PTE 6 (Year 1) tests reading readiness
(including phonics) and comprehension
based on a single passage.
▸ PTE 7 (Year 2) tests English skills (spelling,
grammar and punctuation) based on a
single passage.
ENGLISH – YEARS 1 & 2
FORMAT OF THE
PAPER TESTS
YEARS 1 & 2
▸ Year 1 & 2 will complete paper tests in small
groups with their teachers as part of their
regular lessons. The English and Maths tests
will be split over two sessions.
▸ The tests will be carried out over the
three/four week period, with the aim that
children see this as part of their regular
learning, not a formal test.
FORMAT OF THE
ONLINE TESTING
SESSIONS
What are we
doing to help
prepare the
students for
testing?
▸ As the tests are based directly on the English National Curriculum, all that
we do every day in English, Maths and Science lessons is preparing your
child for the end of year assessments.
▸ In addition, we continue to ensure that all students have regular access to
computers to ensure that they are comfortable in using a keyboard and
mouse; indeed, most students have previously taken online tests and so are
already familiar with the format used by the company.
▸ In Maths, teachers will be ensuring that students are exposed to timed
mental Maths tests, and in English, spelling tests will be completed in the
SATs style format that is used on the assessment and will be using online
resources for comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation tasks.
▸ You will have also noticed that teachers have introduced online resources
in school that can also be accessed at home, which will support your child
in being more confident in working online. Please do be aware, however,
that paper and pencil will always be available, as they are intended to be
used to support students working out their answers, particularly in Maths.
When will these
tests take place?
▸ These tests will take place
throughout May and June.
▸ A detailed timetable will be
sent out to you beforehand.
TEST TIMETABLE
Why use Progress
Tests?
▸ In Dubai, it is now a KHDA
requirement that all students sit these
tests annually.
