SEEKHO

An innovation of Kajol Bangera, a teacher in MPS, Mumbai

“My name is Ali. I study in grade 5. I like coming to school. There are different things to learn and different people to meet but I skip a few days of school once in a while. I gave different tests but didn't know if I was improving or not. Recently, a parent teacher meeting was called. There, the teacher said that I skipped school a lot and showed my parents the attendance register. Even my test scores were shown. The teacher said the marks were getting worse each time. All of this came as a surprise to me. I didn’t know I was skipping school so much and that I was not doing well on the tests. How can I improve if I don’t know how I am doing? ’’

What could be the possible reasons behind these

numbers?4

1. Students not motivated and engaged in school

2. Students unaware of their progress in learning

As teachers, we have the opportunity to improve this situation. Which micro-innovation could you create or implement to remove barriers to attending school for children?

Problem Statement:

I wanted to keep a track of my students’ academic progress.

Progress tree to track student progress

Aar Kumari

MICRO-INNOVATION DESCRIPTION

It helped me assess and track the growth of my students and also movated them to work hard so that they could get their picture on the top of the tree.

IMPACT SO FAR (according to teacher)

Potenal Challenge

Suggeson to overcome challenge

www.stireducation.org

Academically weaker students might feel demovated by not being able to compete with the rest of the class.

Create a different progress tree for tracking the progress of academically weaker students.

Make a large tree on a chart paper and put it up in class.

Every month, assess the students in

different areas like reading, wring, etc by taking verbal as

well as wrien tests.

On the basis of monthly assessment,

keep changing the posion of the

pictures such that students can track

their growth.

Students, who don’t perform well, get their pictures

stuck at the boom of the tree.

Reward students for good academic

performance by scking their

pictures on top of the tree.

Put up the pictures in such a way that they can be removed

easily.

Problem Statement:

I wanted to movate my students to learn and perform beer in academics, extracurricular and sports.

MICRO-INNOVATION DESCRIPTION

The cerficates movated students in my school to engage acvely in academic as well as non-academic acvies.

IMPACT SO FAR (according to teacher)

Design cerficates to appreciate the

students of Class III - VIII for

their efforts in academics as well as extra-curricular

acvies.

Award these cerficates on a monthly basis.

Ask the class teachers of each

class to distribute cerficates to the

selected students in their respecve

classes.

Potenal Challenge

Suggeson to overcome challenge

www.stireducation.org

If the cerficates are given frequently, they might lose their charm amongst students.

Explain the students the value of the cerficates and distribute these once in three months with proper evaluaon of students.

At the end of the month, sit with a pool of teachers to discuss the overall performance of

students on the basis of aendance, classwork, homework, parcipaon in acvies, etc.

Arrive at a consensus on students who

deserve the cerficate for that

IMPACT SO FAR (according to teacher)

Keep regular records of student

aendance.

Idenfy students who were absent for more than 10 days in a month.

Appreciate & reward those students who

consistently aended all classes

in that month.

Suggeson to overcome challenge

There could be a space constraint for displaying all these charts in class.

This idea can be implemented on a single chart by making it more simple - wring the names of students without the cartoons.

Divide the class into four houses corresponding to

four colours - Blue, Green, Pink

and Yellow.

Make a train using chart paper of

different colours where different coloured charts represent the

respecve houses.

Set and give personal goals to the students

who do not parcipate much in class and when they complete the goals, reward them on a

separate chart displayed in the class.

On each house, draw cartoons represenng students of that house

with their names.

Write the name of the class on the

engine and display it in the classroom.

Write good aributes of students who are well-mannered and
