1 Section Chair Column ASQ Letter from the Chair It is an honor and privilege to be nominated as Chairman of the ASQ Orange Empire Section 0701 for the year 2008-2009. In this role, I will be working with the most knowledgeable and dedicated group of quality professionals and leadership committee members. I would take this opportunity to introduce myself. I have been working for Allergan for the past 18 years. I started at Allergan as a Sr. Lab Tech and held positions of Associate Chemist, Chemist, Sr. Chemist, Scientist (managed labs). For the past 5 years, I have been working in the Global Technical Operations Department as Sr. Worldwide QA Manager. I possess B.S. (Chemistry), MBA, and MSQA degrees. I also possess ASQ certifications for Quality Auditor (CQA) and Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB). In addition, I have Lean Pharma certification from Michigan Engineering College and RABQSA certifications. From the time I started my professional career, I have truly believed in quality. Throughout my career, I have completed several projects to improve processes, customer satisfaction, and turnaround timeline. After my nomination as Chairman, I talked to some of the lead- ership committee members and decided that during my term, my focus would be: 1) cost savings, 2) improving member satisfaction, and 3) attracting and involving the younger generation to learn more about quality. Quality can be recognized as a degree of excel- lence with distinguishing attributes. Due to globalization and an increase in out-sourcing activities, the organization has to ensure that regardless of where products are manufactured, they must have the same quality attributes as the USA. As such, it is extremely important for organizations to understand the value of ASQ certifi- cations and monthly meetings. In my opinion, there will be a great demand for quality professionals to collaborate with global manu- facturers, partners, laboratories, vendors, and suppliers in order to enhance the quality of products. I would like to share some of the quote of quality pioneer and “Father” of quality, Dr. Joseph M. Juran, who passed away in February 2008. “Commitment is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism.” “Without a standard, there is no logical basis for making a deci- sion or taking action.” “Fanaticism: Redoubling your efforts after your objective has been forgotten.” If you have any comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail at [email protected]. A real time look at the Quality Professional in today’s ever changing world with the events

that define and shape the Quality arena

“There are two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live.” ~ John Adams 1778

As we reflect on the Independence of our nation, those who blazed a trail to establish it often inspire us.

This is such a case with John Adams. His famous quotes of God and Freedom that has withstood time, allow us to consider that some observations are timeless. Such is this one about the two educations.

It is true there are two educations. One, on how we learn our trade, our living, the other should be how to live off the education that we have blazed ourselves. I have written often and deeply on the impact we have on others, however with the falling economy, rising gas prices and increased foreclosures, the glory of life and the education within it seems to fade.

As we reflect on the aforementioned quote, we must pause to reflect, how we are educating those around us in spite of the fears and anxiet-ies of the economy. One of the lessons that I learned in reading about John Adams was that he seemed to expect constant change, even to the Democracy that he helped to forge. With change, comes the fear of the unknown.

One education is for our trade, the other education how to live, this we can agree. As Quality professionals we impact both. When we examine the impact of educating others through our demonstra-tion of skills, what do we see? I have said it more than once that in manufacturing today, we do not see the skilled worker with ten years experience, only in the trade ten years. We have a revolving door of personnel, downsizing threats and a downright competitive work envi-ronment. What do we do with this task to educate? Well one question I have for you is; what do you want to leave as legacy? What fingerprint

of life do you desire to leave? What quote(s) do you wish to be timeless? These are the type of questions that we need to ask ourselves when evaluating the impact of education in our lives to work and most of all to live!

Education in our quality trade is definitely related to our finishing legacy. The quality professionals that blazed our trail IE: the Juran’s, Day’s and ASQ members of our time, leave lasting impressions and desires to learn. How do we educate? By continuing to look for ways to increase the knowledge and awareness in our field of those around us. Teaching calm in a storm at work, teaching professionalism when meeting with customers as others are looking at you to solve the problem, looking for ways to help others in our trade achieve their life goals, revive passions.

To educate those in our lives on the living education is to be always mindful that we are quality professionals in our homes as well. Do we look for ways to improve our lives through proper rest and good diet? Do we look to increase our own education “off line”?

What we do not want to leave as we experience personal growth and success is highlighted from another quote of John Adams, “Power always thinks it has a great soul and vast views beyond the compre-hension of the weak”. We educate to keep our own power in check, knowing that there is more to learn and others to teach it. Then we need to look and educate those to live with greater learning so they do not become the “weak”.

In this day and age, people are looking up to us for hope of a better tomorrow and assurance of a good life today. Lets dedicate our lives as quality professionals as educators of a great trade that allows us to live a good life.

Now we are the survivors. Impact our profession. Leave a legacy of success. Win the war in the trenches.

Reconnecting the enteRpRise!Reconnecting the Enterprise through Lean!

A recent conversation with the General Manager of a manufac-turing organization that was in the process of implementing Lean methodologies provided insights as to their ongoing results. He was excited about what was happening in his company. Initiatives in the past had not been successful. And he now understood why, as well as why the employees blamed management and vice versa, for the respective failures.

The difference, he stressed, was not in the content of the program, but the implementation of it and the associated transformation of his company’s culture. And although the content of the training was rich and the speeches from the CEO inspirational, the employees were excited when they were able to work together on meaningful proj-ects. While projects required as part of the initiative helped them get started on this path, his display of commitment, support for ongoing improvement projects, and appropriate recognition of performance made all the motivational difference. It improved communication between management, employees and customers. It reconnected the organization!

Based on the initial momentum, successes, and sense of owner-ship from the employees, the General Manager also began a few other efforts focused on communication that supplemented the initiative:• Bringing the employees together for ongoing short training sessions.

These were conducted by the organization’s management or other employees and the “train-the-trainer” concept was encouraged.

• Holding brief sessions to share successes/failures. Avoidance of risk taking was not discouraged any more

• Leading brief sessions to review the organization’s purpose, its vision, its challenges, strengths and concerns. These were conducted on an ongoing basis vs. a one shot deal as things change and people want to and have the right to know. It was also an opportunity to nip the proverbial grapevine in the bud!

• Facilitating ‘vent’ sessions to allow employees to share concerns regarding issues that were preventing them from delivering a good product on time. Out of these meetings came great ideas for improvement and became a feeder for Lean projects

Generally there seems to be a ‘disconnect’ of some sort in orga-nizations. There is a general consensus that communication between management, employees, and customers is a good thing and most are willing to do it. The challenge always appears to be ‘how’? A message to be communicated needs to be clear in a number of ways: what is to be communicated, who is the target audience, how do they best receive the message (e.g. medium, frequency, level of detail),…

As a corollary, while organizations often know what they want to achieve, the ‘how’ also eludes them. Are they, for example, trying to re-energize and re-focus? Business initiatives in the past (e.g. Quality Circles, TQM, Reengineering), all sought to gain the same type of improvements. However, after a few well publicized success stories, organizations soon started searching for the next panacea!

Employee involvement, with purpose, seems to provide the answer. And Lean/Six Sigma programs motivate organizations at all levels, from the ‘expert’ to the ‘worker bee’. These initiatives provide not only a purpose, but also the tools, and the structure to ensure repeatability and leverage successes throughout the organization. If implemented correctly, they should support the company’s strategy and help address the following questions: What do we stand for? What gave birth to this organization? What is our purpose? What is our vision? What are our challenges? What do we do well?

This creates the sharing, clarifies the vision, confirms the com-mitment, re-establishes the direction, generates new ideas, re-ignites the organization’s values, and instills pride. Improvement projects become the norm and a way of doing business – a part of the everyday culture.

By working in these common forums and leveraging these tools we can begin to come together. Administration, engineering, produc-tion, marketing, quality, etc. can all start uniting as a team, under-standing each other, and working towards a common purpose…. We all want to do good work and make the organization successful. So why live with the feeling that ‘they’ don’t get it? Let’s re-connect!
