There are several warm mix technologies available in the marketplace, but they all suffer from the same problem – the cost. The producer of thewarm mix asphalt spends more money on additives than they save fromreduced energy costs during manufacture.

TMA-50 is the first additive on the market that enables you not only toreduce your mixing temperatures by up to 50ºC with all of the consequentenvironmental and working benefits, but also immediately and considerablylower the production cost. We estimate that a large producer of asphaltcan save millions of pounds a year by using TMA-50.

Test results of SMA mix with different additives on Cooper Gyratory Compactor. The device fixes the number of rotations necessary for achieving specified mixture density. These results have been confirmed by a recent test carried out by TRL in the UK.

TMA-50 is a high technology liquid additive, which works at the microscopic interfacebetween the bitumen and aggregate. It reduces the frictional forces at this interface, enabling the reduction of mixing temperatures by up to 50ºC. Our extensive laboratory testinghas proven our product performance to be equal to or exceeding that of our major competitors.

WMA (Warm Mix Asphalt) is typically produced at 30ºC lower than HMA. Using TMA-50 you can lowerthe temperature by up to 50ºC. This has a profound impact on the energy required to heat theaggregate in the mixing plant. Our experience has shown a reduction in energy costs of up to 50%*.This advantage, coupled with the low cost of TMA-50 compared to other leading brands, allowsthe asphalt producer to achieve a significant reduction of production costs. We estimate that alarge producer of asphalt can save millions of pounds a year by using TMA-50.

By using TMA-50’s advanced adhesion properties, up to 45% RAP content to the mixes can beincorporated, which offers a further commercial benefit to the producer.

Please contact us to arrange a meeting where we can calculate the savings available to you ona plant-by-plant basis.

Using TMA-50, we have successfully extended the paving season of HMA (Hot Mixed Asphalt)products from mid/late September until the first weeks of December, where temperatures havedropped to well below freezing. Due to the large distances involved in Russia, we have extendedthe range of the asphalt plants’ distribution radius by up to 200% with the use of TMA-50, mixedat traditional HMA temperatures.

TMA-50 also features a proprietary adhesion agent, which aids the performance of the bitumen. This helps to prevent stripping and also stops residual water from lower heating temperatures andfoamed bitumen interfering with the coating process. In fact, our laboratory tests have shown thatwhere you use TMA-50 in conjunction with foamed bitumen, you get all of the benefits of reducedbitumen viscosity, improved coating performance and the ability to lower the mixing temperatureseven further than with foam technology alone. TMA-50 removes the moisture from the aggregateand creates a strong, water resistant chemical bond with the bitumen. This chemical bond alsohelps to considerably improve pavement life.

TMA-50 was developed, tested and used in Russia - the country with some of the harshest weather conditions.

Commercial Benefits

*This can vary due to individual plant characteristics.

The use of TMA-50 in WMA significantly reduces the hardening of the bitumen during the mixingprocess. This leads to longer pavement life and increased flexibility of the bitumen.

We have conducted a wheel tracking experiment in our laboratory on an InfraTest 20-4000Hamburg wheel tracker in accordance with EN 12697/22 and we found that Stone MasticAsphalt produced with TMA-50 offered better resistance to rutting than the control sample.

Due to the way that TMA-50 helps to increase the compaction performance, it is possible to lay amuch thicker layer of asphalt whilst still achieving the correct compaction density. This savesconsiderable time on emergency repairs.

By mixing the asphalt at HMA temperatures and using TMA-50, you can extend your haulagedistance by up to 200%, knowing that your client can achieve the desired performance on site.Furthermore, adding TMA-50 to your mix can eliminate clumping and hardening of the product inovernight storage silos, enabling you to better manage your workload the following day and increaseplant productivity.

Smaller reinstatement crews will see an immediate benefit of the asphalt made with TMA-50 as itwill enable them to use the asphalt for longer and achieve a much greater level of compaction usingtheir plate compacters. One of the major factors in reinstatement failure is the lack of adequatecompaction.

Asphalt mixed with TMA-50 starts out at a lower temperature, it cools quicker, meaning you canopen the site to traffic much sooner than with conventional HMA. This is especially critical onmajor trunk roads with expensive lane rental costs.

Production and Quality Benefits

Lower mixing and paving temperatures minimise fume and odour emissions for the asphalt workeras well as create a cooler working environment. As a rule of thumb, reducing the temperature of the asphalt by 12ºC equates to a fume reduction of 50%.

As you can see from the table above, there is a significant improvement with regards to fumeexposure for the asphalt worker when using TMA-50.

By mixing your asphalt at up to 50ºC lower than HMA, stack emissions are dramatically reduced. This is especially important for urban plants that operate in areas of high population density.Using TMA-50 can help reduce the following:

СО2 – Carbon dioxide reduction up to 50%CO – Carbon monoxide reduction up to 30%SO2 – Sulpur Dioxide reduction up to 35%VOC – Volatile Organic Compounds reduction up to 50%NOx – Nitrous Oxide reduction up to 70%Particulate release reduction up to 55%

Using TMA-50 will give you the opportunity to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of theproduced asphalt. TMA-50 gives the applicant a distinct advantage when applying for tenders - thecarbon footprint is being given increasing importance.

Health & Safety

TMA-50 represents a breakthrough in WMA. We believe that it is the firstproduct on the market that combines all of the benefits of traditional WMAproducts with a commercial saving for the producer.
