Program: Evolution of CISP Speaker: Mr. Guru Singh New Age Casting
So another month has gone by. I can’t believe we are three quarters through the year already. It seems as if we just celebrated News Years. Before we know it the Holidays will be here. Speaking of Holidays we are having the ASPE Annual Christmas/Holiday Party again this year. Last year we combined it with the 50th anniversary dinner and had a great turnout.
We are trying a new location with some new entertainment. The location will be the Pickwick Gardens in Burbank California. For the entertainment this year we are having dueling Pianos. I for one have never seen this before, but I understand it’s a lot of fun. We are trying to find something that will keep you guys entertained so you want to stay a little longer and for the members that have not been in a while bring them back. The date is December 5th at 6PM. The cost is 49.95 this includes two drink tickets. I think this event is going to be a lot of fun for everyone. Keep an eye out for further announcements.
The joint ASPE LA and ASPE Orange County Product showThe product show is in the books. We had a great turnout from the rep side, not as well on from the engineering side. We don’t have a final count but I think the count for engineers was around 60 to 65. The venue I think had a great flow to it. Really only one way in and out so we could have locked the doors to keep everyone in (I was thinking about doing this).

The City of San Diego has a couple of proposals that will impact the California Plumbing Code:1. Related to the modification of plumbing systems
for relocated and change of occupancy for existing buildings.
2. Delete the restrictions of use of ABS and PVC pipe for drain, waste and vent in sprinkler protected buildings. Modify the permissible piping material sections for sanitary drainage piping, vent piping and storm drainage piping to allow unrestricted use of nonmetallic pipe in sprinkler protected buildings.

SHORT HISTORY OF TOILET.
This common fixture is known all over the world under various names: John, Crapper, water closet, toilet, bathroom, can, washroom, pot, powder room, head, throne, etc. I don’t believe that there is any other plumbing fixture in use today which will have so many names.
Based upon the latest archeological discoveries, the first flushing toilet, dated 17th Century BC, was in the palace of King Minos in the island of Crete, in Mediterranean Sea. King Minos palace was equipped with bathtub, hot and cold water, toilet with running water and sewer systems.
Next historical data is from the Roman Empire. Romans were an example of engineering marvels including aqueduct to bring water to the Cities, underground sewer systems as Cloaca Maxima, built in 8th Century BC, to provide water and waste water disposal for Rome. The Romans were aware of importance of sanitation and frech unpolluted water for the safety of their citizens. In Rome the famous baths of Thermae of Caracalla, had public toilets with running water, pools with hot and cold water, steam baths and places to relax. The complex was built in Rome during 212-217 AD, by Emperor Caracalla.
These facilities were open for all citizens. The ruins of these facilities are still available now, and you can visit them in your next trip to Italy.
Unfortunately the Roman civilization, which started in 8th Century BC, ended in 5th Century AD, and was replaced by new rules of order imposed by the barbaric tribes, who conquered Rome. After the fall of Rome, 5th Century AD, all sanitation rules and practices were ignored or forgotten.
One Member ’s Opinion
EDUCATION REPORTHaig Demergian, PE, CIPEV.P. Education
It is difficult to explain, how from this well organized Roman State Empire, the sanitation rules, culture, science, production of goods and entire Roman way of life, changed to the worst.
From 500 to about 1500 AD, Western civilization enters a period called “Middle Ages” or” Dark Ages”. Lack of sanitation and poor transportation of potable water allowed spreading of terrible diseases, which wiped out a large portion of Europe’s population. Moreover, population started to live in towns close to each other and new rules of sanitation and water distribution were necessary. During this period chamber pots were common used and the contents were usually thrown in the streets. This procedure was helping the spread of diseases and resulted in a foul smell from decomposition of human waste.
In the rural areas, each dwelling had a “privy” with a cesspit, built near the house. The waste was collected in the cesspit and when the cesspit was full, the solids were collected and used as fertilizer.
At the closing of “Middle Ages” period, the scientific community made finally a connection between diseases and poor sanitation. As a result new laws were enacted to prohibit waste water to be thrown into the streets. Took another 100 years to install underground public sewers. In the mean time the toilet was redesigned and provided with a tank for flushing the bowl. In 1596, in England, Sir John Harington, designed and built a flush toilet with a water tank. This toilet was installed in Queen Elisabeth I, Richmond Palace. The toilet was working, but no other similar toilet was produced. It took about 200 years for a similar device to be reinvented.
As part of the history of toilet, should be mentioned Thomas Crapper. He was an experienced inventor of plumbingware manufacturer, but he didn’t invent the toilet. The toilets manufactured by his factories were stamped with the name “Crapper” Some people assumed in error, that he was the inventor of the toilet, because synonym of toilet is crapper. But this is another story for a future article.

I would like to thank all the reps for the show of support for the Los Angeles chapter. And for the engineers that were able to attend thank you as well. I know a lot of use are very busy and can’t make it to some of these events, and I completely understand this as well.
Keep an eye out on the website for photos of this event. Scott Steindler was out again with his mask. I had a great time following him around taking pictures with some of you guys and gals. Thanks for keeping a sense of humor and playing along with him.
Attendance at our meetingsSomething I found out at the product show and something I have known for a while is that we have a lot of plumbing engineers that are not coming to our meetings on a regular bases. I would have to say that I introduced myself to 10 engineers that I have not seen at our meetings before. What this tells me is they know ASPE is here for them, but that maybe we need to provide better speakers for the membership. We have asked a few times for suggestions but have not received much feedback. So the board is going to really look at this in the next couple months and if we need to pay for speakers to come speak at our meetings we will do so. I also want to get some flyers printed up for our reps to take to the engineering firms to hand out and personally invite the engineers to our meetings. If the engineer has not been to a meeting for a year or more we will pay for their dinner as well. We need help from all the reps to make this happen. You’re the only contact we have with these engineers. So at the October meeting we will be handing out flyers to all reps. I want to see some new faces before the end of the year and get our attendance up to over 60 members on a regular basis. The ASPE LA PICNIC (ADMISSION IS FREE) SEPTEMBER 27th 11 AM to 3 PMYes I said free. As I said in other articles, we are giving back to the membership. We have the funds to do this. There is no reason not to. The event starts at 11 AM and runs to 3 PM when the engineers will once again smash the reps in the annual softball tournament.
So my birthday is the 27th as some of you might know. Well anyone that’s been to a meeting in the last couple months anyway. So what do I want for my birthday you might ask? Well I would like to see the biggest turnout from the reps side and engineer’s side that we have ever seen. That’s it. And of course I want the engineers to smash the reps but well if that does not happen I guess its ok. So Ron / Kelly bring your best you’re going to need it.
Now for the family side of this event. We are having the Mad Scientist coming to put on an amazing show for the kids and maybe some of us adults can learn a thing or two who knows. So I look forward to seeing all of my friends at this picnic.
WEBSITE AND THE NEWSLETTERSo I have had a few people tell me they are not getting the newsletter. If you know of anyone that has not received our newsletter that should be receiving it please invite them to go to the website and sign up. If they go to the members tab and click there they can register for the newsletter. You no longer have to get in touch with Jeff and give him your info. We are going to add a few things to this section as well. We are going to allow you to upload a photo of yourself. My hope is to have a tab set up that shows all of our members with a photo if they want to add this and contact info as well so everyone can contact you. Your contact info can be blocked if you would like as well.
Until next month.

In 1775 the flush toilet was reinvented, by Alexander Cummings who patented the toilet in England. From England, the flush toilet spread slowly in other countries in Europe and the new colonies in America. Now, the shape of the bowl, the flushing mechanism and the finish of the fixture is changed somehow from the original, but the operation principles, are the same.
Today many regions of the world experience long periods of drought. California is not an exception. Consecutive droughts of the last 4 years, depleted the reserve of underground water and water in the lakes and rivers are getting low.
Local jurisdictions are trying to improve the situation by ordinances and Code revisions, which will promote the use of water saving plumbing fixtures and change the behavior of the consumers. Another incentive is by penalizing consumers for using more water than the average.
These actions will save water, but not enough to resolve the basic condition of providing more water.
The toilet was completely redesigned to keep up with the trend to conserve water. Before 1990, toilets were designed to use 5-6 gal. per flush. In 1992 an EPA regulation mandated water savings toilets with 3.5 gal. per flush. Later the EPA regulations mandated toilets with 1.6 gal. per flush. And today City ordinances require toilets with 1.28 gal per flush. Based upon preliminary tests made recently by PERC, toilets with flushing rates below 1.28 gal. per flush will not be acceptable.
In other words, the toilets we use today require 4 gal.per flush, less water compared with the toilets we used in 1990. This is a lot of water saved.
With all the effort, to redesign existing plumbing fixtures for conservation, we still have about 2 billion people, allover the world, with no sanitation and no sources of safe drinking water. To provide water and sewer infrastructure for all these people is a monumental undertaking with an astronomical price.
As an alternate, it was proposed to reinvent a new toilet which will not require water or sewer or septic tank, The new toilet shall be: easy to build and maintain, be hygienic and sustainable, operational cost about $ 0.05 per use, per day, don’t discharge pollutants, generate energy, clear water and minerals. The design should be used by single family customers.
Money for design and a prototype of this reinvented toilet is secured from grants from various Foundations and organizations. Eight Universities received grants for this research/competition. We are awaiting the result of the competition..
Today the market offers toilets with heated seats, toilets with built in hot water spray jets and blow dryers, shredder toilets, toilets made of china or stainless steel, toilets made specifically for handicap persons, small kids toilets, toilets for astronauts to operate at zero gravity force, toilets to operate with vacuum drainage systems, where waste water can flow down or up to the point of collection.
John, throne, water closet, toilet (and any other names you want to identify yourself). You have come a long way, and we are still working for your improvement.
