We are planning for a Residential & Commercial Construction Project at Plot 662 ofWagholi areaof Pune city wherein we propose for 6 number of buildings with a total Built-up area (BUA) of34,128.36 (STC) square meters. The total capital investment in the project would beapproximately INRll0 Crores. As this BUAexceeds the limit prescribed vide Schedule appendedto EIA Notification 2006, we need to seek Environmental Clearance from your esteemedauthority.

The site is located in developing area of Pune city. The project proponents have proposed

a design, which has minimum stilt area enabling more and more open spaces for

recreation. There would be no impact on community facilities and land use as it is already

a Residential area. Land use map is enclosed for reference. As regards to the disturbance

to local ecology, it is note worthy that the land is barren at present and the project

proponents have proposed for a landscape. In view of this, the project will not have any

adverse impact rather the positive impact as far as greenery and ecology is concerned.

1.4 Will there be any significant land disturbance resulting in erosion, subsidence &

No. There will no significant land disturbance as the land is leveled. Soil profile of sub-

surface is given as the land has been lying unutilized, thus there is no possibility of soil

erosion/subsidence etc. The Pune city is in seismic zone III and entire construction will be

done considering the above.

Seismic Environment & Precautions commitment

Pune lies in the seismically active zone of Koyna Region, which is about 100 km south of

Pune. Pune has recently been upgraded to lie in the zone III, which is the second most

dangerous seismic zone in India. Consequently, Pune has experienced some moderate-

intensity and many low-intensity earthquakes. Although earthquakes were not known to

have originated in Pune itself, an earthquake of a very slight intensity took place in Pune

that had its epicenter in Dehu, about 13 km from the main city.

1.5 Will the proposal involve alteration of natural drainage systems? (Give details

The proposed development is planned in such a manner that it will not alter the existing

drainage pattern of the area Please refer Annexure III for contour Map of project

Earth work will be required only for foundation activity. Land is leveled with no major

undulations. Some backfilling will be done using debris removed from exaction during

foundation.

Sub-stratum removed will be used for back filling the plinth/foundation in order to bring

formation level of plot above the road level to facilitate storm water drainage. The landfill

able part of waste from use of construction raw materials/building materials will also be

used for filling up the plot. Balance if any will be utilized as fill material in other

construction site in vicinity by the proponents.

Environment Management Plan

Environment friendly housing is an emerging concept in field of construction. Environmental Management

can help this approach for protection of environment within and outside projects premises. Though

construction project does not involve pollution through industrial process, or industrial effluent but is a

larger developmental activity due to major inflow of people, and construction activity. Environment

management will provide an eco-friendly lifestyle to people staying within project area and fulfill statutory

requirement as well.

Objectives of Environment Management Plan

1. Resource Minimization

2. Mitigation of Environmental impacts during construction as well as operational phase.

3. Improve and beautify biological aesthetic status of premises

4. Improvement of Air, water, land environment of project area.

It is emphasized that many of the protective and enhancement measures can be implemented by

adopting suitable planning and design criteria during construction of the project. Further, it is necessary

that the resources required for the mitigation/protection, enhancement measures and monitoring are

provided for in the cost estimates of the project, to ensure proper implementation.

1.0 AIR ENVIRONMENT:

1.1 Construction Phase

a) Mobile source emissions

I. Transportation of raw materials required for construction will be carried out during non-

peak hours.

II. Parking of delivery trucks or other equipment will not be permitted on public road during

unloading or when not in active use.

III. To minimize dust emissions due to trucks carrying cement, gravel, sand to site, ready mix

concrete carried in enclosed container will be used, which is a better option as compared to

on site batch mixing.

IV. Use of Dust Control measures during material transport like Water Sprinkling, Covering the

trucks.

b) For stationary source emissions:

I. Most of the machinery related to construction will be located close to construction area for

ease of handling. Machinery such as crushers, conveyers and mixers will be screened with

sheets of suitable material to reduce generation of suspended particulate matter and

noise.

II. Areas prone to fugitive dust emissions due to activities such as excavation, grading sites

and routes of delivery vehicles across patches of exposed Earth, will be frequently water

sprinkled to prevent re-entrainment of dust.

Apart from these, equipment/machines and vehicles will always be kept in good state of repair to

minimize emissions. Low emission vehicles/equipment should be used wherever feasible.

2.0 NOISE ENVIRONMENT

2.1 Construction Phase

• DG set: Acoustic enclosure for noise control

• Adequate plantation which will act as external noise barrier for the residents

3.0 WATER ENVIRONMENT:

3.1 Construction Phase

• Construction water requirement met through tankers

• Monitoring of surface and ground water for change in quality due to construction activity.

• Drinking water analysis

• Provision of temporary toilets with proper disposal of sewage through public sewer line

• Use of tanker water for construction

3.2 Operation Phase

We will install scientifically designed Rain Water Harvesting System, Sewage Treatment Plant.

Rainwater harvesting system will have two-fold objective:

1. To utilize rain water available on the plot in direct way or indirect way to reduce the load on

water supply system.

2. To minimize the storm water drainage load to avoid water logging locally as well as on larger

scale.

The total water collected by rainwater harvesting on the plot will be used for Ground water recharge

which would increase ground water table of the area and reduce storm water quantity. We will

implement properly designed storm water drains.

Objective of Sewage Treatment will be to treat waste water so that it can be re-used for toilet flushing

and gardening. Balance water will be let out to Municipal Sewer line. Sewage treatment provided is highly

sophisticated to treat sewage up to tertiary level. Low water consuming fixtures such as electronic

activated taps will be used in the toilets to reduce water consumption.

Other Measures includes;

• Awareness campaign for residents about effective treatment and recycling of treated waste

water, and rain water harvesting.

• We will provide Water Treatment Plant

• Provision of STP with tertiary treatment and disinfecting facility

• Quarterly monitoring for STP inlet & outlet

• Rain water harvesting with 11 No. recharge pits

• Use of recycled water for flushing, gardening

• Strom water drainage will be properly maintained.

5.0 LAND ENVIRONMENT

5.1 Resource Management:

The resources such as sand, metal etc will be taken from Govt. owned / approved agencies. One of the

impacts on the land environment during construction phase is the requirement of construction materials

as identified. It is proposed to use fly ash to partially offset use of cement in the construction. This will

reduce sand requirement by about 20% & will also solve the problem of fly ash disposal.

The proposed project involves removal of sub-stratum during excavation for foundation. The impact of

excavation for foundation will be reduced due to use of excavated material / debris generated for filling

purposes and for road construction.

The solid waste generated due to packaging material will preferably be recycled and / or reused.

5.2 Solid Waste Management:

During construction, solid waste will be mostly construction and demolition waste and most of this waste

will be utilized as filling material or for road construction.

During operation phase management of solid waste will be done through eco friendly method.

Segregation of waste at the source in to biodegradable and Non-biodegradable waste is prime concern.

Biodegradable waste will be treated through organic waste convertor. Manure will be used in own

landscape.

5.3 Traffic Management:

Another impact identified during studies is the minor increase in traffic volume in the area in construction

phase (because of the movement of trucks carrying raw materials) & in operation phase (due to vehicles

movement for ferrying building occupants)

Special care will be taken during transportation of construction material like cement, sand, aggregate etc

as such material would be transported from various material suppliers. Since road transport is

unavoidable, such movement will be carried out during non- peak hours as far as possible.

The entry/exit to the site will be with adequate curvature at turning so that vehicles coming out /

entering the building do not impinge on road traffic directly. As far as possible, material carrying trucks

should be parked inside the complex & should not be parked on public road.

6.0 GUIDELINES FOR BIO-AESTHETIC MANAGEMENT

6.1 Green belt/Landscape Management

Greenbelt is important feature as far as landscape of the premises as well as biological environment

is considered.

1. Enhancement of aesthetic value of the area

2. Proposed project is Residential Complex so proper landscape management is necessary to

beautify the area.

3. Help to reduce Air and Noise pollution.

Prior to plantation of trees Ecological value as well as aesthetic value of tree species should be

considered.

6.2 Plantation Specifications:

Trees should be planted in 1 cu. m pits. The tree pits should preferably be in a row that is not

concretized, with exposed ground, to facilitate infiltration of more water into the ground and healthy

growth of root system. Good anchorage would help minimize uprooting of trees during unfavorable

weather conditions.

The pit should be filled with an even mixture of red earth, sand and farmyard manure. Saplings should be

healthy 3-year old in age to ensure better survival. Trees should be watered on alternate days during dry

season, for 4-5 years. Weekly watering is often required at later stage of growth.

During this growing period, care should be taken to ensure that the tree is growing vertically and is

without horizontal branches. Any branch appearing within 8 feet from ground should be removed by

sawing at the trunk level.

7.0 SOCIO ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT

The proposed construction project is specifically demarcated for residential development. Thus, there

would not be any adverse impact on local population due to the project. This is seen as a positive impact

on socio-economic environment as it will create additional jobs & give thrust to development of services

sector in the city.

7.1 Construction phase:

The health and safety of the workers for the construction project should be ensured by:

• Adequate drinking water, toilet and bathing facilities for workers

• Personal protective and safety equipments will be provided.

• Doctor & First aid facility for workers

• Crèche for children of workers

• Regular health check up for workers

• Educational and awareness program for safety measures

7.2 Operation Phase:

For safety purpose during operational phase

• Awareness programs regarding socio-economic impacts of residential projects on

surrounding area.

• Environmental and safety awareness programs for surrounding area.

• Disaster management/Emergency preparedness plan will be explained with the help of

experts.

In addition, we will construct a compound wall of 1.5 M height and plant the trees within premises along

compound wall, to attenuate the noise level.

Periodic inspection and maintenance of all water storage tanks should be carried out at regular intervals

to prevent outbreak of waterborne diseases

8.0 Environment Management Responsibilities

During construction phase, contractors as well as site-in-charge will be responsible for implementing all

the mitigation measures recommended.

Planting of trees on open spaces and road-side should be initiated during construction phase itself. In

operational phase, the work should be continued along with post-monitoring of planted area. An officer

will be appointed by us to ensure monitoring and inspection during construction period as explained

above.

Strom water management will be done by project proponent at project site with

arrangement of rain water harvesting pits. Overflow will be connected to municipal storm

water drainage line. Hence no problem of flooding will occur in construction and

operation phase as well.

2.7 What are the impacts of the proposal on the ground water? (Will there be

tapping of ground water; give the details of ground water table, recharging

capacity, and approvals obtained from competent authority, if any)

There will be positive impact on ground water table of the area. Rain water harvesting

will be done to recharge ground water of the area. Ground water will not be used in any

case during construction or operation.

2.8 What precautions/measures are taken to prevent the run-off from

construction activities polluting land & aquifers? (Give details of quantities

and the measures taken to avoid the adverse impacts)

The plot is located in developing area. The run-off during construction period will be

diverted to municipal storm water system and during operation phase development of

landscape and rain water harvesting techniques will reduce runoff from the area.

The storm water drains in the area are closed type. The drains are laid along roads &

No, there will be no unsanitary conditions around the site. as the workers will not live

within the plot. & the workers will be provided with toilet, which will be connected to a

septic tank. Thus, there will be no impact on surrounding due to sewage disposal.

During the construction phase due to excavation activity, dust emissions are expected. All

other emission sources are intermittent and include emissions from materials transport,

from heavy vehicles on site etc. During Operational phase minimal impacts on air quality

due to vehicular emissions in the premises and emissions from DG sets while in operation

are expected.

Environment Management Plan

Environment friendly housing is an emerging concept in field of construction. Environmental Management

can help this approach for protection of environment within and outside projects premises. Though

construction project does not involve pollution through industrial process, or industrial effluent but is a

larger developmental activity due to major inflow of people, and construction activity. Environment

management will provide an eco-friendly lifestyle to people staying within project area and fulfill statutory

requirement as well.

Objectives of Environment Management Plan

1. Resource Minimization

2. Mitigation of Environmental impacts during construction as well as operational phase.

3. Improve and beautify biological aesthetic status of premises

4. Improvement of Air, water, land environment of project area.

It is emphasized that many of the protective and enhancement measures can be implemented by

adopting suitable planning and design criteria during construction of the project. Further, it is necessary

that the resources required for the mitigation/protection, enhancement measures and monitoring are

provided for in the cost estimates of the project, to ensure proper implementation.

1.0 AIR ENVIRONMENT:

1.1 Construction Phase

a) Mobile source emissions

I. Transportation of raw materials required for construction will be carried out during non-

peak hours.

II. Parking of delivery trucks or other equipment will not be permitted on public road during

unloading or when not in active use.

III. To minimize dust emissions due to trucks carrying cement, gravel, sand to site, ready mix

concrete carried in enclosed container will be used, which is a better option as compared to

on site batch mixing.

IV. Use of Dust Control measures during material transport like Water Sprinkling, Covering the

trucks.

b) For stationary source emissions:

I. Most of the machinery related to construction will be located close to construction area for

ease of handling. Machinery such as crushers, conveyers and mixers will be screened with

sheets of suitable material to reduce generation of suspended particulate matter and

noise.

II. Areas prone to fugitive dust emissions due to activities such as excavation, grading sites

and routes of delivery vehicles across patches of exposed Earth, will be frequently water

sprinkled to prevent re-entrainment of dust.

Apart from these, equipment/machines and vehicles will always be kept in good state of repair to

minimize emissions. Low emission vehicles/equipment should be used wherever feasible.

3.0 WATER ENVIRONMENT:

3.1 Construction Phase

• Construction water requirement met through tankers

• Monitoring of surface and ground water for change in quality due to construction activity.

• Drinking water analysis

• Provision of temporary toilets with proper disposal of sewage through public sewer line

• Use of tanker water for construction

3.2 Operation Phase

We will install scientifically designed Rain Water Harvesting System, Sewage Treatment Plant.

Rainwater harvesting system will have two-fold objective:

1. To utilize rain water available on the plot in direct way or indirect way to reduce the load on

water supply system.

2. To minimize the storm water drainage load to avoid water logging locally as well as on larger

scale.

The total water collected by rainwater harvesting on the plot will be used for Ground water recharge

which would increase ground water table of the area and reduce storm water quantity. We will

implement properly designed storm water drains.

Objective of Sewage Treatment will be to treat waste water so that it can be re-used for toilet flushing

and gardening. Balance water will be let out to Municipal Sewer line. Sewage treatment provided is highly

sophisticated to treat sewage up to tertiary level. Low water consuming fixtures such as electronic

activated taps will be used in the toilets to reduce water consumption.

Other Measures includes;

• Awareness campaign for residents about effective treatment and recycling of treated waste

water, and rain water harvesting.

• We will provide Water Treatment Plant

• Rain water harvesting with 11 No. recharge pits

• Strom water drainage will be properly maintained.

5.0 LAND ENVIRONMENT

5.1 Resource Management:

The resources such as sand, metal etc will be taken from Govt. owned / approved agencies. One of the

impacts on the land environment during construction phase is the requirement of construction materials

as identified. It is proposed to use fly ash to partially offset use of cement in the construction. This will

reduce sand requirement by about 20% & will also solve the problem of fly ash disposal.

The proposed project involves removal of sub-stratum during excavation for foundation. The impact of

excavation for foundation will be reduced due to use of excavated material / debris generated for filling

purposes and for road construction.

The solid waste generated due to packaging material will preferably be recycled and / or reused.

5.2 Solid Waste Management:

During construction, solid waste will be mostly construction and demolition waste and most of this waste

will be utilized as filling material or for road construction.

During operation phase management of solid waste will be done through eco friendly method.

Segregation of waste at the source in to biodegradable and Non-biodegradable waste is prime concern.

Biodegradable waste will be treated through organic waste convertor. Manure will be used in own

landscape.

5.3 Traffic Management:

Another impact identified during studies is the minor increase in traffic volume in the area in construction

phase (because of the movement of trucks carrying raw materials) & in operation phase (due to vehicles

movement for ferrying building occupants)

Special care will be taken during transportation of construction material like cement, sand, aggregate etc

as such material would be transported from various material suppliers. Since road transport is

unavoidable, such movement will be carried out during non- peak hours as far as possible.

The entry/exit to the site will be with adequate curvature at turning so that vehicles coming out /

entering the building do not impinge on road traffic directly. As far as possible, material carrying trucks

should be parked inside the complex & should not be parked on public road.

6.0 GUIDELINES FOR BIO-AESTHETIC MANAGEMENT

6.1 Green belt/Landscape Management

Greenbelt is important feature as far as landscape of the premises as well as biological environment

is considered.

1. Enhancement of aesthetic value of the area

2. Proposed project is Residential Complex so proper landscape management is necessary to

beautify the area.

3. Help to reduce Air and Noise pollution.

Prior to plantation of trees Ecological value as well as aesthetic value of tree species should be

considered.

6.2 Plantation Specifications:

Trees should be planted in 1 cu. m pits. The tree pits should preferably be in a row that is not

concretized, with exposed ground, to facilitate infiltration of more water into the ground and healthy

growth of root system. Good anchorage would help minimize uprooting of trees during unfavorable

weather conditions.

The pit should be filled with an even mixture of red earth, sand and farmyard manure. Saplings should be

healthy 3-year old in age to ensure better survival. Trees should be watered on alternate days during dry

season, for 4-5 years. Weekly watering is often required at later stage of growth.

During this growing period, care should be taken to ensure that the tree is growing vertically and is

without horizontal branches. Any branch appearing within 8 feet from ground should be removed by

sawing at the trunk level.

8.0 Environment Management Responsibilities

During construction phase, contractors as well as site-in-charge will be responsible for implementing all

the mitigation measures recommended.

Planting of trees on open spaces and road-side should be initiated during construction phase itself. In

operational phase, the work should be continued along with post-monitoring of planted area. An officer

will be appointed by us to ensure monitoring and inspection during construction period as explained

above.

Details of sewage treatment plant

The quantity of sewage is based on water supply consumption figures. The quantity of

sewage generation is about 80% of domestic water consumption. Domestic water

demand is 117 CMD. The sewage of about 149 CMD will be collected from 214 flats and

commercial complex. The Capacity of Sewage Treatment Plants will be 130 cum/day for

residential & 20 CMD for commercial.

8.2 SEWAGE QUALITY

The wastewater generated is exclusively domestic in nature and hence quality of sewage

is known (as per standard range). The parameter would be as follows:

The plant will be designed for capacity 150 cum/Day (130 KLD for residential & 20 for

Commercial). The treated waste water will be recycled for gardening through

sprinklers/drip irrigation system and for Flushing. The excess treated water will be

disposed off in nearby municipal sewer. The plant will be constructed below Ground

Level the equipment room will also be located below Ground Level.

PROCESS - FLUIDIZED AEROBIC BIO-REACTOR (FAB):

The domestic sewage generated from residential complex will be collected in

equalization tank after passing through screen chamber. In equalization tank there will

be separate compartment for removal of oil and grease. Floating oil will be removed

manually and collected in oil collection tank by gravity. From equalization tank oil free

raw sewage will be pumped to FAB tank.

The FAB consists of tank filled with special media. These media are made of specially

developed material of control density such that they can be fluidized using an aeration

device. A bio film develops on the media which moves along with the effluent in the

reactor. The movement within the reactor is generated by providing aeration with the

help of diffusers placed at the bottom of the reactor. The thin bio film on the media

enables the bacteria to act upon the bio degradable matter in the effluent and reduce

BOD/COD content in the presence of oxygen from the air that is used for fluidization.

The aerated liquid will overflow to tube settler for separation of solids from liquid. The

settled sewage will be collected in intermediate storage tank & then will be pumped

through sand filter, activated carbon filter and Ozonation system to treated water

storage tank. From storage tank, treated sewage can be reused for flushing/gardening.

The sludge from settling tank will be pumped to FAB tank to maintain desired MLSS

concentration in FAB tank as return sludge (optional) while excess sludge will be stored

in sludge holding tank. This sludge further pumped to sludge dewatering system. The

dried sludge will be used as manure.

1.0 INTRODUCTION Selection of technology for sewage treatment should be on criteria such as plant

which work without electricity, require minimum maintenance and most importantly,

the technology should be self-sustainable. National Environmental Engineering

Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur has developed a novel technology based on

natural method of treatment of sewage using constructed wetlands. The technology

is named as PHYTORID and is well patented nationally and internationally.

Use of plant species along with their root system along with the natural attenuation

processes can be combined together to get the Phytorid Technology. It is one such

technological solution, which can be easily implemented in cities as well as in rural

areas for treatment of wastewater. The system is based on use of specific plants

normally found in natural reed with filtration and treatment capability. This system can

be utilized for a wide variety of applications. It can be used for secondary and tertiary

treatment of municipal wastewater, sludge management, treatment of industrial or

agricultural effluent as well as for the treatment of landfill leachates.

PHYTORID technology is developed by NEERI for sewage treatment. NEERI is a

government research institute under Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

This is one of the most reputed laboratories for environmental research and

consultancy. This technology has world patent to its credit. The national

environmental policy recommends use of constructed wetland systems for efficient

sewage treatment. Go Green Solutions is marketing technology as an authorized

licensee of PHYTORID.

2.0 SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR SEWAGE TREATMENT The main objective of the proposed project is to provide a simple, feasible, practically

sound, eco-friendly, maintenance free and cost-effective technology, which can

handle the sewage waste water treatment leading to reuse of treated water for

purposes like gardening.

3.0 TYPICAL DESIGN FEATURES The general concept design for the Phytorid system is presented in Figure 1.

However, the design may be further modified as per specifications and land

availability.

The sub-surface flow type, Phytorid system is proposed for the treatment of sewage

or domestic wastewater which will consists of a basin or a channel with a barrier to

prevent seepage, but the systems/ cells/ beds contain a suitable depth of porous

media. A primary treatment facility would also be constructed along with basic for

effective removal of solids and thus reduces the marginal BOD.

The porous media also supports the root structure of emergent vegetation. The

design of the Phytorid system assumes that the water level in the cells will remain

below the top of the filter media.

The vegetation to be utilized for the said Phytorid system is very important. Various

species of aquatic plants have been utilized to attain maximum efficiency in the

treatment of domestic wastes. These include species like Phramites australis,

Phalaris arundinacea, Glyceria maxima, Typha spp., Scirpus spp., other common

grasses etc.

4.0 ADVANTAGES OF PHYTORID TECHNOLOGY � Treatment efficiencies for the removal of BOD, COD and faecal coliform are in

the range of 92-95%,

� Nutrients such as N and P are removed up to 80%, which is greater than the

traditional chemical methods.

� It is a very cost effective technology when compared with the traditional

wastewater treatment methods.

� Since it utilizes natural vegetation and rhizosphere microorganisms, it is eco-

friendly method of treating sewage.

� An important factor to be considered is the aesthetic improvement that is

provided by this methodology.

� No mosquitoes and odour nuisance

� The treated water can be used for enhancement of environmental architecture

such as roadside fountains.

� The quality of treated water is comparable to irrigation standards

5.0 METHODOLOGY The treatment process consists of primary treatment plant followed by Phytorid

treatment system. The hydraulic loading shall be started with 40% capacity in the

beginning till the time of acclimatization of the plants to the hydraulic load and shall

be later increased to 100%. The further loading and efficiency shall be monitored to

establish how much more of either hydraulic or BOD load can be effectively used.

6.0 LAND AREA REQUIREMENTS The total area required for proposed grey water treatment capacity of 100 m3/day

wastewater treatment is approximately 110 m2. The area includes area requirements

Sewage Collection Tank, Settler tank, Phytorid bed, Treated Water Collection tank

and sludge drying bed.

7.0 OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE This technology is natural system; as a result operation is mostly passive and

requires little operator intervention. Requirement for area can change on various

factors such as load (kg BOD/day), ambient temperature, topography of the region,

flow characteristics, etc. Maintaining uniform flow across the Phytorid system through

inlet and outlet adjustment is extremely important to achieve the expected treatment

performance. Sampling of inlet and outlet will be carried out for a period of 3 months

every month and thereafter quarterly after stabilization of the treatment systems for

first one year.

Rain water Harvesting and Storm water Drain

The rain water harvesting could be done by no of ways. Some of the alternatives are

• Collection of roof rain water from individual bungalow and using it for specified

purpose like drinking, garden etc.

• Collection of storm water and utilizing it for recharging of ground water table

through existing and new wells.

• Collection of storm water in protected underground storage tank / open water

body and utilization of the same as per requirement.

• Trenching within the plots.

We recommend the following:

• The storm water collected in the storm water conveyance system will be used or

recharging of ground water table through the bore wells.

• Wherever possible, the trenches would be provided for percolation.

• Excess water will be stored in the rain water harvesting tank proposed and will

be used for different purposes

• Percolation of the rain water depends upon the permeability of earth strata. By.

Providing no. of recharge pits and recharge of bore well necessary efforts will be

taken for maximum recharging of ground water.

� The estimated saving in common area lighting consumption is up to 20% i.e. 30240 KWh

A REPORT ON THE HYDROGEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS

CARRIED OUT AT 662, WAGHOLI, PUNE

INTRODUCTION:

In order to understand the overall Hydrogeological conditions and physical properties of rock below surface investigations were carried out at IVY Estate, Wagholi. The Project area is located in Gat No.662 and measures 19,433.45 Sq.Mt. It is being developed by Aslam Haji & others. The investigations were conducted in two parts, viz. (A) Hydrogeological and (B) Geophysical. The data obtained has been interpreted and analysed and the findings are discussed in the present report.

(A) HYDROGEOLOGICAL:

Field traverses were taken over the entire project area to study

topography, geology and hydrology conditions. These aspects have relevance with the occurrence and movement of ground water. The observations are as below.

(i) Topography :

The project area is comparatively a low lying area adjoining Pune –Aurangabad State Highway. The elevated land could be observed in eastern direction. In fact the land in this direction is occupied by small hills having north south trend. The land has gentle slope in western direction.

(ii) Geology :

Geology of the area is that of Deccan trap Basalt rock formation. Products of weathered Basalt, especially Murumic Soil, could be observed during field traverses. In one of the cuttings, Murum is followed by moderately weathered fractured Basalt. Surface exposures of massive Basalt appears predominant towards eastern upland which is less weathered. Even though the project area indicates highly weathered Basalt (i.e. Murum) followed by fractured Basalt, predominantly, the area is covered with hard rock formation. (iii) Hydrology :

The Hydrological characteristics are well understood from the existing

dug wells/bore wells in the area. However, there are no such structures located in the project area. However, historical data in the adjoining parts of the area indicators that inspite of drilling of bore wells upto 100 Mts. Depth they are eighter poor yielding or dry. (500 – 600 lit/hr). A dug well in the vicinity of the project area, studied initially suggests, jointed, fractured Basalt acting as aquifer having moderate yield. This may be due to upland topography and existence of hard massive Basalt with inadequate fracturing. The project area, since located in comparatively low lying area, the aquifer rock may be slightly more yielding. The overall ground water conditions appear moderate. The weathered jointed and vesicular Zeolitic basalt having shallow depth with inadequate to moderate yielding capacity. In the Deccan trap area, the general trend of water levels for the project area may be as below.

(i) Pre – Monsoon - 20 to 25 Mt. below ground level (ii) Post – Monsoon - 8 to 10 Mt. below ground level.

(B) GEOPHYSICAL (ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY):

For ascertaining the physical properties of rock below surface, Geophysical investigation was carried out. The Vertical Electrical Sounding taken in the area indicates.-

(1) The area is covered with hard rock formation below surface.

(2) The highly weathered Basalt(Murum)is less thickness.

(3) The aquifer rock, i.e. Vesicular, Zeolitic and jointed Basalt is

restricted upto shallow depth.

(4) The area appears favourable for ground water recharge at shallow depth.

From the above, it will be seen that, out of total water availability at present 10% is being accommodated in the aquifer and rest contributing to run-off. This can be utilised for recharging shallow aquifer by appropriate measures suggested above. Since the ground water is dynamic in nature, ground water continues to move under gravity upto the extention of aquifer or upto the place where, its withdrawal takes place through dug well/bore well. Thus, there exists a scope for accommodating additional recharge.

Due to terrain conditions in and around the project area, having shallow

aquifer rock formation the ground water recharge is restricted upto shallow depth.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Since the area is favourable for ground water recharge at shallow depth, following recommendation is made.

1) Construction of filter pits of 2 Mt x 2 Mt. x 2 Mt. dimensions. These

may be constructed along storm water drain line keeping a distance of 15 Mts. Between consecutive pits.

2) In some pits a bore of 10 Mt. may be drilled at its bottom thereby

ensuring accelerated shallow ground water recharge.

QUANTIFICATION OF RECHARGE:

In the area covered with predominant hard Basaltic rock formation,

quantification of groundwater recharge is rather difficult. This is due to anisotropic characteristics of Basalt as far as occurrence and movement of ground water is concerned. However, an attempt has been made as below.

Recharge pits Dimensions = 2 Mt. x 2 Mt. x 2 Mt.

Quantification would be = 2 Mt. x 2 Mt. x 1 Mt. (1 Mt. filter media)

= 4 M3 (one time filling)

Now in a monsoon period 5 to 6 days in a month are such when the

rainfall is more than 5 mm. This is useful for ground water recharge. Therefore in a total monsoon period of 120 days there would be such 25 days. Thus the recharge likely to take place through one filter pit would be

4 M3 x 25 = 100 M3

Additional recharge would be available depending upon no. of pits. In the remaining 100 days, emptying of pit (recharge) and refilling during

subsequent rain spell is anticipated in a cyclic manner. A bore of 10 Mt. at the bottom of pit, as suggested, would further

enhance the recharge quantity.

CONCLUSIONS:

(1) Area represents low lying topographic setting adjoining Pune- Aurangabad road.

(2) The weathering of Basalt is more in this part in comparison with the eastern high land topography.

(3) It represents shallow aquifer conditions upto 10 to 12 Mtrs below which the area is predominantly covered by hard Basalt.

(4) The weathered, Vesicular Zeolitic Basalt and jointed Basalt are the aquifers.

(5) The Water Conservation measures, as suggested is likely to strengthen the shallow aquifer and will also help in soil moisture retention through out the year.
