How to take notes in ASL
• ME – #1 “pointing to chest”• YOU – #1 “pointing to other person”• WHO – L “at chin and wiggle index finger” – (Or) #1 “pointing towards mouth and circulate”
• WHERE – #1 “signing space and swipe back and forth sideways
• COPY-me – Non-dominant (ND) hand closed 5 in front of chest with dominant (D) hand 5 and pull away from chest to form a flat O
• FORGET – closed 5 “on top of forehead then sweep across forehead with final A”
• DON’T KNOW – closed 5 “at tip of forehead then brush air away from forehead with palm out at end”
• GO – Both hands #1 “begin at chest area then bring palms down along with fingers”
• WRITE – ND hand closed 5 in front of chest with D hand like holding a pen and scribble (palm up) on ND
• DRAW – ND hand closed 5 in front of chest (palm up) with D hand “I” and imitate “drawing” on ND
• PUT-DOWN – ND hand closed 5 in front of chest (palm up) with D hand “O” in middle of ND then change to slap ND with D closed 5
• NAME – both hands “H” on top of each other (palms in)
• SAME – Y go sideways (left to right)• DIFFERENT – both hands “D” cross fingers
then push away from each other• NICE+MEET+YOU – ND and D are closed 5 on
top of each other (palms facing each other) then D brushes across ND then both hands “#1” meet together in middle then point to other person.

Notes on Numbers
• For 1 -5 (when counting): Keep palm facing INWARD.
• 6 – 9: palm faces outward– 6: thumb on pinkie– 7: thumb on ring finger– 8: thumb on middle finger– 9: thumb on index finger
• 10: thumb sticks up in the air and shake
Which Hand?
• One-handed signs are formed with one hand.• Use your dominant hand (the hand you write
with)– Right handed people use their right.– Left handed people use their left.
Two handed symmetrical signs
• Require equal use of both dominant and non-dominant hands in symmetrical movements.
Two handed non-symmetrical signs
• The dominant hand moves while the non-dominant hand remains stationary.
