What is Biofeedback and Neurofeedback?

Biofeedback is a well-established training method that teaches a personto achieve voluntary control of physiological functions which areregulated autonomously (i.e., without conscious awareness). Examples ofautonomously regulated physiological functions includes:

●Heart Rate●Blood Pressure●Hand or Foot Temperature●Muscle tension

Through biofeedback training, a person can learn to control a variety ofbodily functions. For example, once a person is aware of how fast his/herheart rate, he/she can learn to reduce or increase the heart beat at will. This is similar for hand temperature and muscle tension. The ability to dothis can result in better self-regulation, leading  to improvements in well-being and performance.

● Improve regulation of sleep/wake cycle●Better cognition/thinking●Normalization of sensory processing● Inhibition of inappropriate motor responses● Improve regulation of moods and emotions●Better memory and etc.

In a typical neurofeedback session, the computer converts the analysedbrain waves (EEG) into controls of a computer game. The personundergoing neurofeedback actually uses his/her brainwaves to controlthe computer game! If the desired brainwaves (EEG) patterns aredetected, the game will proceed and points will be awarded. If theundesired EEG patterns are detected, the game will stop and no pointsare awarded. This is based on the scientific principle of operantconditioning.

Why Biofeedback and Neurofeedback?

Biofeedback and neurofeedback are safe and non-invasive. During thetraining, signals from the body and head are measured and analysed. Theresults are then presented back in a timely manner to the trainee through

Introduction

Page 10: ASIA’S FIRST NEUROFEEDBACK CONFERENCE SINGAPORE 2015 Conference 2015 brochure.pdf · ASIA’S FIRST NEUROFEEDBACK CONFERENCE SINGAPORE 2015 LEARNING, SHARING, ... Universiti Sains

This makes biofeedback and neurofeedback very safe andnon-invasive. No drugs or medications are involved. As such, there areno side effects.

The field of biofeedback and neurofeedback has a long history. It hasbeen shown that learning to control our bodily functions can lead toimprovements in performance and health (see bibliography ofneurofeedback). The benefits gained from doing neurofeedback are longterm as it is a skill to self-regulate that one learns during the training.

Peak Performance Applications:●Sports coaches use neurofeedback training to improve the sports

performance of their trainees● Performing arts coaches use neurofeedback to improve musicality,

dance performance and creativity●Educationists use neurofeedback to improve IQ, focus, language and

memory●Meditators use neurofeedback to get deeper into meditation and to

master meditation faster

Health and well-being:Health practitioners use neurofeedback to improve health conditions fordisorders such as  depression, epilepsy, insomnia, PTSD, autism and etc.(see bibliography of neurofeedback)

The American Academy of Paediatrics now considers neurofeedback as anevidence-based intervention for ADHD. They now recommendsneurofeedback as a non-medical alternative for ADHD intervention.

Neurofeedback and biofeedback interventions are tools that the non-medical practitioner can use to work effectively with disorders.

Neurofeedback provides a non-medical alternative for those who do notrespond well to medication.

Page 11: ASIA’S FIRST NEUROFEEDBACK CONFERENCE SINGAPORE 2015 Conference 2015 brochure.pdf · ASIA’S FIRST NEUROFEEDBACK CONFERENCE SINGAPORE 2015 LEARNING, SHARING, ... Universiti Sains

Applications for neurofeedback includes (but not limited to)● Attention Deficit Disorder● Depression and Mood Disorders● Substance Abuse and Addiction● Learning Disorders● Chronic Fatigue Syndrome● Cerebral Palsy● Hyperactivity Disorder● Bipolar Disorder● PMS● Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder● Anxiety & Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

● Myoclonic Dystrophy● Epilepsy● Violence● Chronic Pain● Head Injury● Sleep Disorders● Stroke● Autism● Dissociative Disorders● Peak Performance

ADHD WorkshopThis workshop is intended for neurofeedback therapist with at least one year ofexperience. It is not intended to be a practical workshop. It aims to equip thetherapist with clinical knowledge about ADHD for better diagnosis andintervention, and to facilitate better communication with medical practitionersand clients.

The workshop will look at issues with current diagnosis of ADHD and the role ofbrain imaging techniques in diagnosis. There will be a review on how thediagnosis has changed over time. This will give the neurofeedback therapist adeeper understanding of the disorders.

For intervention, we will look at the common medication for ADHD, behaviouraland family therapy, and the role of neurofeedback. We will look at the studiesthat the American Academy of Paediatrics reviewed that led to their inclusion ofneurofeedback as a level 5 best support evidence based intervention for ADHD.
