    In the past decade there has been a tre!endous increase in the

    yields of 1arious crops to !eet the de!and of o1er*rowin*

    population8 achie1ed by usin* pesticides and insecticides. These are

    che!icals that are sprayed o1er crop to protect it fro! pests. 2or

    e#a!ple8 T8 9H$8 :inc phosphide8 Mercuric chloride8 dinitrophenol

    etc. All pesticides are poisonous che!icals and are used in s!all

    ;uantities with care. "esticides are pro1en to be e)ecti1e a*ainst

    1ariety of insects8 weeds and fun*i and are respecti1ely calledinsecticides8 herbicides and fun*icides. Most of the pesticides are

    !alathion. The presence ofInsecticides residues in e1en raw sa!ples

    of wheat8 sh8 !eat 8 butter etc.ha1e aroused the concern of

    a*ricultural ad!inistrators8 scientists and health o=cials all o1er the

    world to put a chec0 o1er the use of insecticides and to search fornon insecticidal !eans of pest control.

     AIMTo study the presence of insecticides or pesticides -nitro*encontainin*/ in 1arious fruits and 1e*etables.

    MATERIALS REQUIRED

    Mortar and pestle 8 bea0ers8 funnel 8 *lass rod 8 lter paper china dis8 water bath8 tripod stand8 fusion tube8 0nife8 test tube.

    Sa!ples of 1arious fruits and 1e*etables8 alcohol8 sodiu! !etal8ferric chloride8 ferrous sulphate crystals8 distilled water and dil.Sulphuric acid.

    PROCEDURETa0e di)erent types of fruits and 1e*etables and cut the! into s!allpieces separately. Transfer the cut pieces of 1arious fruits and1e*etables into it separately and crush the! . Ta0e di)erent 0indsfor each 0ind of fruits and 1e*etables and place the crushed fruitsand 1e*etables in these bea0ers and add '&& !l of alcohol to each othese . Stir well and lter. $ollect the ltrate in separate china dishesE1aporate the alcohol by heatin* the china dishes one by one o1er awater bath and let the residue dry in the o1en . Heat a s!all piece osodiu! in a fusion tube 8 till it !elts. Then add one of the abo1eresidues fro! the china dish to this fusion tube and heat it till redhot. rop the hot fusion tube in a china dish containin* about '& !lof distilled water. 9rea0 the tube and boil the contents of the chinadish for about > !inutes . $ool and lter the solution. $ollect theltrate . To the ltrate add ' !l of freshly prepared ferrous sulphatesolution and war! the contents. Then add %

    solution and acidify with dilute H$l. If a blue or *reen ppt. orcolouration is obtained it indicates the presence of nitro*encontainin* insecticides. Repeat the test of nitro*en for residuesobtained fro! other fruits and 1e*etables and record theobser1ation.
