President’s Message January got off to a good start with the Women in ASHRAE Clay Shooting Clinic and the Sporting Clays RP Event. Unfortu-nately, the chapter meeting was cancelled due to wintry weather and dangerous road conditions. I am pleased to report that the chapter did not incur any expenses from the cancellation and everyone was kept safe by Ken’s decision to post-pone the past president’s meeting until February.
Erin Picton is assembling the roster. I am responsible for forwarding the many email requests from people wanting to ad-vertise. I have a much better understanding of the size of Erin’s task. Please be sure to recognize Erin’s efforts next time you see her.
I want to use this month’s message to remind everyone of the chapter’s main purpose which is raising money for research.
ASHRAE Society has approximately 60,000 members around the world. This relatively small group takes responsibility for the comfort, safety and sustainability of the world’s built environment by issuing standards, guidelines and handbooks that are used all over the world. Most people would expect governments or universities to shoulder this burden. I never cease to be amazed that it is a volunteer organization that takes ownership of this responsibility and essential says people’s well being is too important to entrust to government!
Fulfilling the responsibility of ensuring people are comfortable and safe requires research regarding the science of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning. Research money is raised by the chapters through money making events and corporate and individual solicitations. Every time we gather at the HESS Club or a chapter event, I am reminded of the importance of our grass roots organization that fulfills such a lofty goal.
Research Promotion relies heavily on Region VIII which is the largest contributor by far. Houston is the largest contributor in Region VIII. This is not surprising due to the size of the city, but we do not take for granted that people will contribute. Under the board’s leadership, the chapter works hard to raise many tens of thousands of dollars for research promotion.
Unfortunately, Houston never received the Society award for the highest RP contribution because Rocky Mountain House chapter in Colorado always won. In fact, Rocky Mountain House would contact the Society RP office on the last day of ASHRAE’s fiscal year and determine the amount needed to make them the highest contributing chapter. They would wire the amount of money needed to ensure they would win the award.
Houston chapter would send money near the end of the ASHRAE fiscal year in hopes of winning, but the board refused to send chapter funds for the sake of pursuing an award. For example, in 2015/16 the Houston chapter contributed $108,000 forcing Rocky Mountain House to contribute $113,000 to ensure they won the award. These amounts set new records for chapter RP contributions. Houston’s participation in the RP one-upmanship generated extra money for Society, but did not get us much recognition.
I am pleased to announce that under Ken Shifflett’s stewardship, the Houston Chapter crushed Rocky Mountain House in 2016/17 by contributing $130,000. Ken and the Houston chapter received the Society award for highest RP contribution at the annual Meeting in Chicago this month.
Winning the Society RP award says that the Houston Chapter is focused on supporting Socie-ty’s main purpose of conducting research for the benefit of mankind. Chapter members should be pleased about this remarkable accomplishment. Be sure to congratulate Ken next time you see him. Better yet, send him a thank you email at [email protected]. I look forward to seeing you at the past president’s dinner on February where we will honor immediate past president, Kimberly Thompson, who built the organization that made the RP award possible.

The ASHRAE Annual Meeting will be held in Houston at the Hilton Americas in June, 2018. The technical program will be presented starting on Sunday, June 24 and end on Wednesday, June 27. It is the Host Committee’s re-sponsibility to provide 2 monitors for each session. The monitors’ responsibilities are to scan the badges of the attendees for purposes of providing documentation of professional development hours for those attendees that require it and to help resolve any issues that may arise with the audio/visual presentation. Approximately 32 monitors will be required for the Sunday sessions and 18 will be required for each of the Monday through Wednesday session. In order to cover this requirement, we would like to recruit at least 100 individuals to pro-vide this service. In exchange for your volunteer efforts, your registration for the meeting will be complementary and if you need the continuing education credits to maintain your professional license, you can scan your own badge for each session you monitor and get 3.5 to 4 pdh credits. The registration fee for the Annual Meeting will be more than $500, so this is quite valuable to the volunteer.
We will start actively promoting for volunteers next month and will be putting a roster together starting in Janu-ary. If you are interested in helping the Houston Chapter by volunteering to serve as a monitor, please contact me via email at [email protected].

Series vs. Parallel? By:Kapil Upadhyaya Very soon, the good old debate may be coming to rest. During the past decade, I have witnessed mixed re-sponses from engineers about using Series or Parallel fan-powered boxes in commercial buildings. Many of them see energy efficiency and extended lifespan of fan-motor as potential benefits of Parallel boxes over Series boxes. But many more would argue that leakage from Parallel boxes and increased AHU fan power makes these less efficient than Series boxes; this camp of engineers prefers to trade constant ‘humming’ of Series boxes for intermittent sounds of Parallel boxes. In 2017, ASHRAE Journal published a series of 3 articles on fan-powered VAV terminal units that dealt with this issue in detail. Part Two of this series specifically ad-dressed issue of Series versus Parallel boxes under different conditions. Most importantly, this article highlighted some-thing important about simulating VAV boxes with fractional horsepower motors – an issue that LEED Reviewers have acknowledged for some time – namely, lack of fan power models to represent Electronically Commutated Motors under different conditions. LEED Reviewers have identified this issue in energy simulation software for some years, and since then have accepted ‘exceptional calculations’ to demonstrate savings from ECM motors. The ASHRAE Journal article references an im-portant AHRI study (AHRI-8012: Developing Fan Power Ter-minal Unit Performance Data and Models Compatible with EnergyPlus) that was jointly conducted by Baylor University, Texas A&M University and University of Louisiana. The scope of study was restricted to a generic, small office building with five zones. Simulation models for FPTUs were proposed for Energy Plus, and parametric simulations were run to compare the following parameters: PSC/SCR motor ECM motor Constant flow
Variable flow 0%, 25% and 50% capacity factors (CF) 0%, 5% and 10% leakage. While there is some work to be done to update Energy Plus with FPTU models, the simulation results from this study present interesting findings. A summary of find-ings is shown in the following table:
It shows that a constant-air Series Box with ECMs is less efficient than a PSC/SCR box, if not oversized by 25% of design capacity; as expected, higher savings are achieved with variable-air boxes. But savings from variable-air do not increase significantly with oversizing. Also, Parallel Boxes in general, are more efficient than Series boxes, unless leak-age is higher than 10%. Lastly, leakage rates play significant reduction in energy consumption of Parallel Boxes, and hence represent an important opportunity for installers and commissioning professionals. With growing integration of engineering, simula-tion and commissioning practices in many consulting firms, I perceive that FPTU design, selection and operation will get its due attention in coming years. Right-sizing and right-selection may provide a cost-saving opportunity for com-mercial building owners, while meeting their energy effi-ciency goals. Have a high energy month! Eliminating Wet & Moldy HVAC Air-Filters in
Healthcare Facilities Written by: David N. Schurk, DES., CEM., LEED® AP., CDSM., CWEP., SFP., CIAQM., Member ASHRAE TC 9.6, Member ASHE. Anyone who has experienced “wet-filters” inside a healthcare HVAC air-handling unit knows this situation can create a breeding ground for mold and microbial growth, an unacceptable condition for AHU’s serving patient care settings. In addition to health concerns, this moisture may reduce filter efficien-cy and add additional air-side pressure drop which increases fan operational costs.
This wetting situation may be more evident with blow-thru fan configurations, and when filters are positioned immediately downstream of cooling coils and humidification components in what is considered the “final-filter” position. There are various reasons why filters become wet, most of which can be elimi-nated with proper AHU design, selection and control. Ensuring that cooling coil air velocities are kept low enough to prevent moisture carryover into the airstream and that humidification controls, sensors and valves are installed and functioning properly are key considerations. But even with the most judicious AHU design, filters may still become wet for what appears to be no good reason. There is a relatively simple ex-planation as to why this may happen.
Cold air leaving a cooling coil will typically approach saturation (the air is near 100% relative humid-ity). When this airstream enters a final filter, or any component that increases its velocity, the temperature of the air will drop as the air accelerates. Even a slight drop in temperature may be enough to allow the airstream to cool to a point where moisture is condensed. In cooling systems that operate for many hours a day, considerable amounts of moisture may condense and collect on filters or other internal surfaces within the AHU. If there is not sufficient downtime that allows for this moisture to evaporate, filters will remain wet.
When designing a healthcare AHU that includes final filters, consider using a “draw-thru” (cooling coil before fan) verses “blow-thru” (cooling coil after fan) configuration. This allows the residual motor heat from the draw-thru fan to be utilized as a source to heat the airstream leaving the cooling coil, mov-ing its temperature slightly off the saturation point (reducing its relative humidity) usually enough to avoid any moisture condensation.
