INTRODUCTION
Science and Math go hand-in-hand. For example, mathematical formulas are used in daily scientific tasks. A formula is used when you have to find whether or not a block of wood would float during a science lab, volume of a penny with a graduated cylinder, number of protons and neutrons in a Neon atom, and to find the ionic charge for ionic bonding.
DENSITY Density:
the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substsance
Let D= density Let V= Volume Let M= Mass
DENSITY FORMULA
The Density Formula is D=M/V in which to find the density, you must divide the mass of the wood by volume of the wood. The label is grams per cubic centimeter.
BLOCK OF WOODD=M/VM=60 gramsV= 120 centimeters cubedD=60 grams/ 120 centimeters cubedD=0.5 grams per cubic centimeterThis block of wood would float because it has a density less than water’s which is 1 gram per cubic cm.
DENSITY CONTINUED
Without division no one would be able to decipher the density of a block of wood. You would not be able to determine whether the block of wood would float or sink.
VOLUME Volume is the
measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space
It is also used in the density formula
Let V=Volume Let w= water
measurement Let
r=measurement of water with the penny
PENNY
1. Fill a graduated cylinder with 50 grams of water.
2. Place the penny in and record the grams of water
3. Subtract the water with the penny measurement by the water measurement.
4. That is the volume centimeters cubed. (cm and gm are the same things)
Rock:V=r-ww=50 gramsr=75 gramsV=75-50 gramsV=25 centimeters cubed
VOLUME IN LIFE
• Volume is used to find the density of an object and without subtraction it would be impossible
PROTONS AND NEUTRONS
Protons are positively charged particles in the nucleus of an atom
Neutrons are neutrally charged particles in the nucleus of an atom
The number of protons is shown on the periodic table above the element symbol
The atomic mass is protons and neutrons combined and found underneath the element’s name.
HOW MANY PROTONS AND NEUTRONS
Let p=number of protons
Let n=number of neutrons
Let a=atomic mass The formula is
“n=a-p
Example: n=a-p p= 10a=20n=20-10n=10 so there are
10 neutrons
MATH AND PROTONS AND NEUTRONS
You could never find out the number of protons and neutrons of neon without subtraction
THE IONIC CHARGE To find the ionic charge
of Silicon you have to use subtraction. If math did not exist, no one would be able to find out the ionic charge of Silicon for ionic bonding. (image of ionic bond to the right.)
Let i= the ionic charge of silicon
Let p=number of protons in Silicon
Let e=number of electrons in Silicon
ION
IC C
HA
RG
E FO
RM
ULA
FORMULA SILICON The formula is
“i=p-e” The number of
protons is subtracted by the number of electrons
i=p-ep=14e=18i=14-18i=-4The ionic charge of Silicon is -4
CONCLUSION
Math moves Science. Without math, you would not be able to perform labs, make a Bohr or Lewis Structure of protons and neutrons, decide whether an object would sink or float, determine the ionic charge of Silicon for ionic bonding, or finding the volume of a substance. Participating in Science would be impossible without the assistance of Math.
