One of the most memorable was a short ride in the mountains when I was a young boy. From the window of our passenger car we could see the steam engine up front pulling around the steep, winding grade and at the same time we could see the steam engine at the rear pushing with all its might. The church is not too different. It takes a lot of pulling and pushing and matters not whether we’re at the front or the back, at the bottom or the top, whether we are clergy or lay. It takes all of us together to get the Lord’s work done. Investigators at a train-wreck scene zeroed in on a pin which was not in place, and which “may or may not have been human error.” Every member of Ashland has his or her responsibility – through giving and working, praying and helping – to have all of the pins in place to help make this church what God wants it to be. When one of us lets the church down, it may not seem life threatening but it sidetracks the church. All of us must pull or push together. All aboard! --Tresco E. Shannon

    Trains and Churches

Trains have always fascinated me. I have a small electric train stored up at home even today. The train tracks through Irmo recall some of my memories of my train trips. All aboard! --Tresco E. Shannon

Almighty and most merciful God, our heavenly Father: We confess that we have grievously sinned against thee in thought, in word and in deed. We have come short of thy glory; we have broken the unity of thy holy Church; and, every one of us has turned aside from the way of life. Yet do thou, O most merciful Father, hear us when we call upon thee with penitent hearts. Pardon our sins, and grant us thy peace. Confirm us in all goodness that we may serve thee with a quiet mind, and bring us to the life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

    The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

    Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

    TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

    John 2: 1-11 NT Pew Bible p. 93

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
