FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Unless the Lord builds a house, the builders build in vain.”

These words resonate so deeply with me. As we work, we know that unless God is with us, no amount of work will bear fruit. We work in hallowed ground. God has called us to this work, and we are privileged to be part of God’s plan and calling.

We have now moved to a new building. Along with it comes new hopes and dreams. We are encouraged by so many: our students, our supporters, our parents, and our partners — all of you who are holding this report. Our work continues to grow. We no longer just operate a special school. We are now an organisation that mentors others in best practices for working with people with disabilities. The best growth happens not through addition, but rather through multiplication, resulting in a movement. As we join hands with other organisations, we walk together to make a much greater impact.

Our Projects - Ashish Centre, our early intervention program, and Ankur, our vocational program - seek to make a difference in the lives of our children and young adults with autism. Our staff development program ensures that all our staff are kept up-to-date with the best practices in working with children with autism and other disabilities. Our training programs allow us to empower other institutions and individuals. Yes, we are moving forward.

We would not be able to do all of this without the support of so many of you. For partnering with us in this progress, we thank you. As we go forward from here, may we walk in humility and in God’s strength, for this is not our work, but God’s work. And, we do not walk alone, but with each and every one of you contributing to the organisation and to the movement.

Thank you,

Geeta Mondol

PROJECTS AND PROGRESS

The Ashish Centre (launched in 2007) is our early intervention program for children who are differently abled. This year, we served 39 children, ages 4-24yrs, and their families. Our education program starts with an assessment, then creation of

an individualised education plan (IEP) for each student. Children receive speech, occupational and physical therapies; a special education tailored to their individual needs; and training in activities required for daily living. Since each child’s well-being begins at home, and parents of special-needs children experience unique challenges and stresses, we also invest significant time and energy in home visits, equipping and counselling the parents of the children we serve.

IT Lab. Thanks to British Telecom, we set up a new IT lab with laptops, iPads, printers, and internet connectivity. It’s a great place for our Ankur students to learn workplace skills like MS Office and data entry. Younger students also respond well to iPads and computers, and enjoy being rewarded with iPad time!

Page 7: ASHISH FOUNDATION FOR THE DIFFERENTLY ABLED …ashishindia.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Annual-Report-2015-16.pdf · Ms. Jayati Ghosh 6 Board of Directors Geeta Mondol Mathew Varughese

Ankur is a vocational and daily-living program which aims to help our older students become as independent as possible. It started in 2009 and significantly expanded in 2014. Ankur fills a critical gap for families who find their children “ageing out” of early intervention programs. Along with income-generating activities (IGAs), Ankur students learn soft skills like hygiene, social interaction, and household tasks. IGAs include spice-grinding and packaging, block printing, jewellery making, and office skills. We have 17 students in Ankur’s morning and afternoon programs, and are so pleased with the students’ progress this year.

5

Training and Mentoring. This year we have significantly increased our investment of time and resources in staff development, and in mentoring

and training other organisations. We have conducted 10 in-house

trainings to keep our staff abreast of the latest developments in working with children with autism and other disabilities. We have intentionally counselled our staff to help them better handle the unique challenges they face with these special students. In addition, we’ve seen many doors open for training and mentoring other organisations. We’ve begun collaborating with World Vision India and Engage Disability Network. We’ve also trained grassroots organisations. Through these collaborations, we’re able to serve many more differently abled children scattered across India than we ever could through our on-campus programs.

Second Chance accepts donations of gently-used clothing and household goods which are then re-sold to the public. This project gives our students a chance to learn skills in retail stocking and organisation, while giving dignity to impoverished families who can afford the items sold at the store. Although successful on many fronts for a number of years, financial constraints required us to terminate this project in March 2016.
