jobsoverthenextthreeyears.RandolphC o m m u n i t y
College has seenrecord enrollment,asourcitizensdealwith the changingeconomy bytraining or new
jobs.Within City
g o v e r n m e n t ,weve completeddistribution orecycling roll cartsand every single-
amily homein the city nowreceives curb-siderecyclingpick-up.Wearemakingplanstoadd recyclingpick-up orbusinessesand multi-amily housing. Weve alsosucceeding in raising $1.2 million orthe renovation o the historic SunsetTheatre.Theabilitytoraisethisundingindifcultfnancialtimesisasignohowimportantthecommunityconsidersthisacility,andthecommitmenttheyhavetotransormingthisoldmoviehouseinto
atop-rateperormingartsacility.Were

o classic car ans to town over thesummer. Our second annual Trick-or-Treat in the Park event was an evenmoreresoundingsuccessthanlastyear,withover5,000peopleattending.OurNeighborhood Crime Watch programstartedthisyear,andwenowhavesixcommunities taking an active role inkeepingtheirneighborhoodscrime-ree.
This year weve also seen a
commitment to preserving the past
andtellingourstory.Wewerenamea Preserve America community, anworked with the Randolph CountHistoric Landmark PreservatioCommission to begin recognizinhistoric buildings and sites within oucommunity. Volunteer Ricky Allredtours o the Old Asheboro Cemeterare consistently drawing groups o 4

hear stories o Asheboropast.Thisinterestinourpareminds us that we live ia community with a uniquand important history, anthat we have to remembewhowehavebeeninordertknowwherewearegoing.

year because most people aremore charitable now thanany other time. There arenumerousorganizationsoutthere whose entire reasonor existing isto make sureunderprivileged kids havea nice Christmas, too. Thisweekend,whilewewereoutandabout,westoppedinat
the North Ridge Church togetsomeChilitohelpthemraise unds or the DreamCenter.TheDreamCenteris a non-proft organizationdesigned to provide amentoring program andeducational services to at-risk students. We were given atourandtoldaboutthepositiveimpactithashadonthelocalchildren who might otherwise not have an opportunity toexcel.
ItdawnedonmethenthatoneothereasonIhavecometoloveAsheborosomuchisthetremendousgivingspiritthatIseeonadailybasis.Thisistrulyacommunitythattakescareooneanotherandthestrongspiritogivingisinectious.SomuchsothatwearegoingtobevolunteeringonChristmasEveandDayhelpingothersserveoodtothosewhoarelessortunatethanweare.We'vedecidedthatthiswillmakeoramagnifcentnewamilyholidaytradition.Iyouaren'talreadydoingsomethingsimilar,thereareplentyoorganizationsthatcoulduseyourhelpduringthisbusytimeoyear.

dental hygiene as a proession, Dr. Cheek knewimmediately her passion or dentistry woul
leadhertogourtherandbecomeadentistGraduation rom dental hygiene schoo
presented a step toward her dreamWhile waiting or the results rom
her licensure exam, she ound oushewasexpectingherfrstchildAter much soul searching, shchosetospendqualitytimewitheramily,sosheputherpersona
dreams on hold and becamemom, while continuing to work as
dentalhygienist.Her husband Gerry worked or a
electronics company, and or the frst ewyearstheymovedaroundquiteabitwithihis territory, living in cities and town
throughout North and South Carolina. Iorder to work in another state, Dr. Chee
traveledtoCharlestontotaketheSouthCarolinlicensure exam. With North and South Carolin
licensesinhand,shecouldworkineitherstate.Asthcouplesettledintoanarea,shewouldlookintotakin
classestocontinuetogarnerthecoursesneededtoapplytodentalschool.In time,theCheekamilyrelocate
backtoNorthCarolina.Indecidingonaplacetlive,theychoseAsheboro.TotheCheeks

supposedly oneothestrongest in theworld and I am embarrassed. Whilewespendtrillionsonawarthatwecantwin,ftymillionAmericansgohungry,unemployment continues to skyrocket,and more and more people lose theirhomes every day. Additionally, 30million Americans are uninsured andoureducationalsystemisinshambles.Allthewhileoilcompanies,banksandmajor corporations post record profts.I wonder i anyone else wakes up,scratches their head and says, Thereissomethingmonumentallywrongwithoursystem.
IhavehadasotspotinmyheartorthehomelessaslongasIcanremember.IdontrecallthefrsttimeIevermetahomeless person, but I am confdent Ieltsorryorthem.Iremembermyultra-conservativeathersayingsomethingtomelikehomelesspeoplechoosetobehomeless andme thinkingwho wouldchoose to be homeless i they couldhavearooovertheirhead.Whowould

children living in
extremepovertyin
other parts o the
world. Each box
wasmarkedoraboyorgirl,ages2-4,5-9and10-14.
Itemsincludedschoolsupplies,awashcloth,acomb,candy
canes, stickers, a t-shirt, toyhelicopters, beadednecklace
little rings and
bracelets, hair
accessories and
yo-yos, loads o
knick knacks that
could fll every
crevice and, o
course, or eachchild, 1 cuddly
