Due to recent hikes in postage, lengthening of delivery times, and our ongoing efforts to be good stewards of the church’s money, we will be going (mostly) paperless with The Messenger. This change will occur in the next month.
There will still be paper copies available for pick up at the church but we will no longer be mailing it out. We will still mail copies to homebound members who do not have email. By doing this we will be saving the church ap-proximately $3500.00 a year in postage and printing cost. These savings will be used for other ministries in the church. In order to make sure that everyone who wants to receive an electronic version gets one please call or email the church office 501-623-6668 or [email protected] with your current Name, Address, Phone Number, and email. This will allow us to update our system with any changes as well. Thank You!
Blood Drive a HUGE success!
Thank You to everyone who participated in our recent blood drive. We had 19 donors! Bob Woodall, coordinator, said we had the most successful church blood drive in Hot Springs. We will schedule another one in about 4 months.
Ash Wednesday Taize Worship Service Start the first day of Lent this year preparing your heart, mind, and soul for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ! Join your church community for our Ash Wednesday Taize Worship Service February 22, at 6:00pm in the Sanc-tuary. Taize worship incorporates lighting candles, with a contemplative mood of prayer, reflection, scripture reading, singing, moments of silence, and adoration of God. We will end the service with the Imposition of Ashes, which is done by the pastors dipping our thumbs in ashes (from palm branches) and making a cross on the forehead of each person who comes forward, as a sign of our repent-ance & mortality. This act of worship helps us to be centered on Christ and is a wonderful way to begin Lent and to prepare to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. We hope to see all you there!

New Friends and Great Food!!!
What more could anyone ask for? Come join the fun of our small group dinner clubs! Each group consists of 8-12 people (singles/couples of all ages) who arrange to meet monthly for dinner at a time and date to be chosen by each group. You may choose to meet at someone's home and bring a dish or go out for the evening. This is a great way to make new acquaintances whether you have been around for years or just started visiting. The Path to the Cross (Large Group Bible Study), Cupp Hall. Come join us as we discover how God’s people’s passionate faith prepares the way for Jesus and his ultimate act of obedience and sacrifice at the cross. The study utilizes video and lecture. Have you visited The Caring Place lately? Did you notice our newly repaved parking lot? What a blessing - no more uneven surfaces which were so dangerous for our volunteers and partici-pants. We cannot thank Sam Clark enough for his generosity in donating funds to cover the en-tire cost of our repaving project, and also to Spa Construction for restriping our lot.

AN AWESOME CHURCH
STAFF!
It occurred to me recently that we have just passed some significant anniversaries with our program staff at the church. I appreciate these folks every day, but I don’t say of-ten enough in public how much I value them. And I also real-ize that many of the members of our church may not know all of our staff, especially if you are not in a program with them. Carl is going to do some pieces highlighting our staff mem-bers, so you might get to know them better. Our new hires on the support staff are awesome. But today I just want to thank our program staff, all of whom have been with us for at least four years. And here they are!
Candy Poirier has been on staff the longest. Last month was nine years! Candy is our “utility staff person.” Her main responsibilities are in Hospi-tality and Outreach, but she is always willing to help with anything, from Wednesday Night meals to older adult ministries to UMW. Michelle Wilkins started five and a half years ago as our administrative assistant and became our children’s minister about two years ago. She is the most organized person I know, and I call her the queen of recruiting. Teresa Holt also joined our staff about five and a half years ago. I had known Teresa for years; she is widely recognized as one of the best disciple-ship and education ministers in the state. I felt fortunate to bring her on in 2006 and have thor-oughly enjoyed her knowledge and passion for
discipleship ministry.
Ron Hall just passed his five-year anniversary as our minister of music. Besides Ron’s education in music, he is an extremely talented musician himself. His leadership throughout the year is solid, but the worship experiences he puts together at Christmas
and Easter have been phenomenal. Mike Lovelady came on staff the same time Ron did, as we began to develop both our traditional and contemporary music ministries. He developed the ConneXion service, and he continues to stay on the cutting edge of what is happening in worship today. I had also known Mike for years (had tried to hire
him before!), and it has been a blessing to finally join forces in Hot Springs.
Bill Skaggs is the newbie on our program staff, passing his fourth anniversary this month. Two things I appreciate about Bill (among others) are his involvement in the youth ministry of the district and the Arkansas conference, serving as a leader in our statewide United Methodist youth ministry.
And the ministry he does with our own teenagers is very sound Biblically and theologically; he takes them into some deep places, and our youth are growing spiritually.
We will be saying more in our staff spotlights, but I just want to express my appreciation to these wonderful staff members. It is a privilege to work together over a long period of time with such an outstanding crew. If you know and in-teract with these program staff, join me in expressing your appreciation to them, too.

HAVE YOU REMEMBERED THE CHURCH IN YOUR WILL?
Recently our church was saddened by the death of Verna Dokey. Verna would have been 99 in January. She and her late husband Vernon had served First United Methodist Church for many years. Before their deaths, they made arrangements to make a gift to the church’s permanent endowment fund.
“My mother and father told me that what you left when you die should go back to the Lord.” This was the philosophy followed by Verna in her planned giving. Our church is richer for her vibrant personality, years of faithful service to our congre-gation, as well as her financial support to the FUMC Endowment. Verna’s gift will help build the endowment so that future needs of the church can be met.
The fund is professionally managed by the Arkansas United Methodist Foundation. The endowment is a permanent fund in which the income may be used at the discretion of the trustees of FUMC of Hot Springs for capital improvements or maintenance. For years to come, Verna’s legacy will be used for the Lord’s work, as her parents had taught her.
One of the simplest ways to keep giving to the Lord’s work after your death is to make a planned gift through a bequest or a gift annuity. To learn more about the opportunities for perpetual stewardship, plan to attend the “Provide and Protect” seminar sponsored by our Endowment Committee and presented by the Arkansas United Methodist Foundation on Sunday, April 15, at noon. February 12th from 3:00 – 5:00 pm… we will spread God’s love for Valentine’s week by putting smiles on the faces of the residents at Coun-try Club Village Retirement Center! We will travel by church van/bus to Country Club Village to deliver Valentine cards, suckers and sing a couple of songs to them! Be here at 3:00 to make some Valentine cards & practice singing! The vans/bus will leave at 4:00 to head out to sing! Don’t miss this SUPER FUN event! April 1st from 2:00 – 4:00pm…join us at the Easter Egg hunt! We will work to make at least 60 baskets to give to the Open Door project for kids living in the Jones Mill area!

GUMBO COOK-OFF February 15th, Wednesday’s at 1st is having a “Gumbo Cook-Off” for the dinner in Cupp Hall that evening at 4:45pm. So get out your favorite gumbo recipes, make a pot and bring to share here with everyone. We will have rice prepared, bread and King’s Cake for dessert. It will be an evening of fun and let’s see who gets crowned the “Gumbo King or Queen.” The dinner is FREE but donations will be accepted that will go to the Methodist Build for Habi-tat for Humanity. The gumbo with the highest donations will determine the winner. Call Candy Poirier at 623-6668 ext. 117 if you plan on bringing gumbo.
HAVEN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH THRIFT STORE AND FOOD PANTRY
Haven UMC had a grand opening for their refurbished “Thrift Store and Food Pantry” on Sat-urday, February 21st. FUMC helped them restore the building through Sharefest in Novem-ber. They are open on Thursday’s from 10am to 2pm at this time and hope by March to have the food pantry up and running and be open Thursday and Saturday. We had about 24 part-ners in ministry from FUMC that helped with painting, shelving, repairing and carpet for the center. This is a community outreach for them in that neighborhood and we are so proud to help our brothers and sisters in Christ. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY The Mission Team has decided to do a Methodist Mission Build for Habitat for Humanity. We are asking the churches in the South Central District to help sponsor this mission project. To get our church started, Wednesday, February 15th we are having a Gumbo Cook-Off at Wednesday’s at 1st, 4:45pm in Cupp Hall of the Christian Life Center. The donations will go to Habitat and will also de-termine the best gumbo. Habitat is building its 97th home in Garland County, and it will belong to one of our staff and member here at FUMC, Sheree Tilley. The home is at 620 Highland Ave., (by Hollywood Park). They have started building and if you would like to participate in helping in any way, the workers are there on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8am to noon. If you would like to donate money to Habitat for Humanity, please put in the memo Habitat for Human-ity and you can leave it in the offering plate or send to the church office. Also if you would like more information, call Candy Poirier at 623-6668 ext. 117.
XYZ (EXTRA YEARS OF ZEST) You are invited to XYZ’s potluck luncheon and program on Thursday, February 16th in the Shelton Room of the Christian Life Center at 11:30am. The guest speaker, Rev. Fred Hunter of Oaklawn United Methodist Church, will be sharing his interpretation of Peter with us. Hope to see you there!

Here are just a few things that our youth have been up to lately... Visitor’s Parking (Gable, Tucker and Spencer Bradley, Brandon Lovelady) did mission work at MITTO over Christmas break. The band is also leading worship. There were 31 Methodist folks from our district staying at Pulaski Heights Method-ist Church and doing different missions each day. They worked at Little Rock Compassion Center, as well as The Wesley Center on the UALR campus. They helped out at the Methodist Family home, Children’s hospital, and Stew Pot.
