Sunday, February 11, 2018 Ordinary Time: 6th Sunday

When February 11 doesn’t fall on Sunday, it is celebrated as a memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes and designated World Day of the Sick. The day was established by Pope St. John Paul II the year after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It’s also the day Pope Benedict announced his retirement in 2013, citing declining health as his reason. This year, the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time falls on this date,

and coincidentally the 1st Reading and Gospel focus on illness. They focus on leprosy, but could be about any disease or condition that evokes fear, alienation or condemnation. Those who suffer are urged to turn to God for healing. For those in good health (at least for now), the example of Jesus is clear: embrace the sick, the outcast, the isolated. Imitate Jesus; help others to know that God’s embrace is wider than we can imagine.

† Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday, February 14. † Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 12:00 noon, & 7:30 p.m.

Ashes are distributed at every Mass. † Lent is marked by prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. † Prayer is a very individual thing. There’s daily Mass, weekly Stations of the Cross, increased reading and reflection on the Bible, devotions like the Rosary, centered prayer, etc. There is no one way. † Fasting means: - on the Fridays of Lent, we eat no meat. - on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday, the faithful between the ages of 18 & 59 eat one main meal, two smaller meals, and nothing in between. - at other times, it is common, though not required, to place other restrictions on ourselves as a means of “keeping” Lent. † Alms-giving can seem to be much when Lent comes so close to Christmas, another season of giving. Again, it’s an individual thing. Our bulletin will have suggestions, but remember that sometimes the best option is to give of your time and effort.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Community 2018 LENTEN SUPPER TALKS

Come to the Lyon Center to observe the Lenten fast by sharing a simple supper of soup and bread. During the meal, we listen to a presentation on a topic related to the social concerns of our Church. This year's theme is "Finding Jesus Everywhere." Our goal this year is to increase our members' commitment to scripture, Catholic social teaching, and action. Each evening begins with a free, simple supper of soup and bread at 6:00 p.m. The presentation starts about 6:20 p.m. followed by questions and ending at 7:30 p.m.

February 16: Sharing the Journey: Keeping Families Together as a Pro-Life Issue. Fr. Jacek Orzechowski, OFM, from Catholic Charities will provide a brief presentation highlighting some of the challenges facing the immigrant members of our Church community. He will identify the unique opportunities that Montgomery County residents may reflect upon to protect the vulnerable, promote justice and nurture the culture of life. An example of the vulnerable is the family of one of the catechists at the Catholic Community of Langley Park that is facing a perilous future due to the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Fr. Jacek Orzechowski, OFM, was born and grew up in Poland. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1988, he joined Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province and obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Washington Theological Union. After serving as a Parochial Vicar at St. Camillus Church in Silver Spring for the past nine years, Fr. Jacek now serves at Catholic Charities coordinating its Parish Community Organizing and Advocacy efforts.

Lenten Supper Talks Schedule February 23: Ecologically Smart use of Energy Dr. Robert M. Simon works within the Archdiocese of Washington to promote the ecologically smart use of energy among the diocesan properties. Dr. Simon was a consultant in the Office of Science and Technology Policy during the Obama Administration. March 2: TASSC (Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition) Truth Speakers TASSC is a coalition of torture survivors and volunteers, representing countries and ethnic groups throughout all parts of the world. "Truth Speakers" are survivors of torture who have chosen to talk publicly about their experiences to educate others and to further the fight for the abolition of torture. They bravely speak out, so their stories can serve to spread awareness and to advocate on the behalf of those who have been silenced. March 9: Finding Jesus among Muslims: How Our Catholic Faith Calls Us to Dialogue & Action Today, our Muslim brothers and sisters face suspicion, prejudice, and discrimination. As Catholics what can we do to help? Author Jordan Denari Duffner will give an overview of Islamophobia, talk about how our Catholic

faith calls us to stand with Muslims, and share ideas for interfaith dialogue and action in our daily lives. Afterward, there will be a book signing where attendees can purchase copies of Duffner's new book. March 16: The Call to Justice: Health Care as a Key Component Dr. Susan Pankratz, the Clinical Director of the McCarrick Center Medical Clinic of Catholic Charities in Wheaton, MD, will explore Biblical and personal reflections on justice and human rights as they relate to health care; consider a human rights approach to fighting poverty, and the implications for health care policy; look at a specific example of mission-centered health care. March 23: Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians The United States granted Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, to Haitians after the catastrophic earthquake in January, 2010. In November, 2017, the decision was made to end TPS for Haitians by Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke. Learn about TPS; hear from former students from CSJB living in the US who are affected, and how this affects our ability to support our Sister Parish in Baradères.

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) reminds us that we have a social mission that is an essential part of what it is to be a believer. CST calls us to live a life of holiness amidst the challenges of today. CST also reminds us of the need to be knowledgeable about issues that threaten the sanctity of life. Every believer is called to serve the least of our brothers and sisters, to hunger and thirst for justice, and to be peacemakers. During our Lenten journey, we can make a difference by “sharing the cross of Christ" in a personal way. Each item is labeled on a cross and found on the wooden cross at the foot of the altar in the Church. Select the cross of your choice as part of your Lenten journey. Items with an * are new or revised this year. All donated items listed will be collected on March 17 and 18 in the Gym, except the Food Drive which will be March 10 and 11.

The crosses are color coded as follows: Call to Family & Community & Participation Yellow Care of God’s Creation Green Dignity Orange Human Rights and Responsibilities Red Preferential Option for the Poor Blue Solidarity Purple

It hurts when we are excluded. Likely most people have felt the sting of exclusion in one way or another. It could have happened in a school yard when a group of kids said we could not play with them. Perhaps the context was an office. Co-workers traded inside jokes in front of us and it made us feel like the odd one out. It could be systemic. People of color suffer many exclusionary injustices, whether about voting, access to health care, well-paying jobs, or the icy stares of the polite-yet-racist individuals. Millions upon millions around the globe are excluded from economic well-being and daily experience the pangs of hunger and the hoarseness of thirst.

The Gospel is a force for radical inclusion, even of the people who were once our enemies. Does not Jesus command us to love our enemies for God’s sun shines on the good and the bad (Mt. 5:44-45)? Jesus consistently goes to the people on the margins, the people in pain, and those suffering from exclusion. One such person in the ancient world was the leper. There were good reasons to exclude the leper. The disease a leper carried was easily transmitted. Hence, there were strict rules segregating the leper from society so that others would not become lepers, too.

St. Francis of Assisi knew this pain that lepers suffer. In one of the few times Francis talked about himself, he related his experience of God through lepers. Francis said, “The Lord granted me, Brother Francis, to begin to do penance in this way: While I was in sin, it seemed very bitter to me to see lepers. And the Lord himself led me among them and I had mercy upon them. And when I left them that which seemed bitter to me was changed into sweetness of soul and body.” Scholars think that Francis died of leprosy since he served them personally. He not only embraced lepers but became one of them. He did not just serve them but identified with them.

Such identification with lepers is what distinguishes Gospel love from conventional love. Like God who joined the human race to love us from within, Francis joined the lepers to love them as one of them. Such mercy is what saves us, for it is divine mercy and we

can share in it. Francis wrote that God led him to serve and live among the lepers. He also wrote that he “had mercy on them.” God heals the pain of exclusion through mercy. The good news of Jesus Christ is the

mystery of divine mercy. Not only does God forgive our sins, but also God became one of us so that we might become God. Jesus heals the leper and then tells him, “Go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” Jesus not only heals the man of the disease of leprosy but works to bring him back into society so that the pain of exclusion is

removed. The healings Jesus performs are never just physical. He heals us socially, psychologically, and spiritually. Of course, his popularity grows. Even though people keep coming to Jesus, he remains in deserted places, rooted in the Mystery of God in silence. Jesus preaches through example. We connect with and receive the mercy of God in silence. Jesus saves. Through Jesus, God saves us from the suffering of exclusion if we but consent to the divine love present in our hearts and, especially, in the poor and marginalized around us. God in Jesus saves us by the divine mercy, which we can receive through interior silence and share with others. The Gospel proclaims that mercy is suffering with others, particularly the poor and marginalized. It is being at home where others are, whether in suffering, or joy, or both. Mercy begins with presence. It starts with being where the other is, letting the other set the place, the frame of mind, and the experience. This assumes inner emptiness.

The merciful person shares another's brokenness. It is the gift of being present to another. It means to suffer with someone. It means being totally open and available, as God is open and available, to others in their pain. Jesus saves because he reveals God’s mercy, which welcomes the excluded, soothes the need for social recognition, and exorcises the demon of addiction. Thus, Jesus tells us, “Be merciful as your Abba is merciful.” Because we are one with God we are to give flesh to God's mercy right here and right now.

Lenten Spiritual Retreat

St. Ignatius Loyola invites you to his First Spiritual Exercises (FSE) Lenten retreat, "Inner Peace in the Service of God." The retreat includes five Saturday meetings 9:30-11:30 a.m. beginning February 24, 2018, and a personal commitment to pray 30-40 min, 5 days/week, using material provided by SJB and Michael Hansen, S.J. Please visit http://firstspiritualexercises.org/ for more information and to register. Email questions to [email protected]. “Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are.” Pope Francis, Christmas 2014 Comments from two SJB FSE participants from the past three years: - "This retreat is filled with beauty. You are “swept in” joy by the scripture and urged to contemplate great treasures and mysteries. I felt renewed." - "What surprised me is that I expected St. Ignatius’ exercises to be all about asking forgiveness for sinfulness and just a little bit about mediation and grace. It was so much more."

SJB School News

Water is key to life and SJB students are learning more about this precious resource. The 7th grade class just completed a unit on water management. They explored the best ways to ensure this precious resource is available to all who need it, and they also researched the effects that mismanagement of freshwater may have on people. The class researched pollution in the Great Lakes watershed and the steps that have been taken to clean up the Great Lakes. Seventh grade then debated whether enough was being done to preserve the Great Lakes and how much success clean-up methods have achieved. In addition to a study about water within our own nation, the class also traveled outside the United States to Central Asia where the Aral Sea has shrunk by over two-thirds due to farmers in the area diverting water from the sea in order to irrigate their crops. They studied the effect the shrinking of the Aral Sea has had on the economies of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, on the ability of the people there to make a living, and on the health of those living around the sea. Students worked in groups to write and perform a newscast, explaining why the Aral Sea has shrunk and what effect it has had on the people who live near it.
