Nurturing Independence The halow project is a Guildford based charity committed to supporting young people with a learning disability to give them the same life choices and chances as any other young person. They work with each individual and their family, professionals and other organisations to design and develop services that enable young people to consider and make choices about their lives. They are passionate about people’s rights; they believe that each young person with a learning disability has the right to

be part of, and respected, in their community. Young people with a learning disability should have the right to a life they choose, in ways which best suit them. All of their work is centred around these principles, enabling young people to become citizens.

The inspiration for halow came from Harriet, Amber, Laura, Oliver and William, each having a learning disability. Their parents, all friends, came together at the beginning of 2006 concerned with the prospect of their children’s future and others like them. Passionate that these young people should lead positive and hap-py lives, near their own friends and families in Surrey, the parents established the halow project. Volunteering Their volunteers play a critical role in supporting young people at the various social events and activities halow organise. There is no minimum time commitment so whether you can help once a week, once a month, or three times a year you are still important to them. During 2012 the project undertook trips to watch Guildford Heat Basketball Team. Guildford Storm Netball Team, the 2012 Paralympics, a trip to a local pantomime, and horse riding with the Riding for the Disabled Association. For more information on halow or to find out how you could help, please visit their website www.haloproject.org.uk, Twitter @halowproject or call them on 01483 447960. halow’s Patron is Damon Hill, OBE, who needs no introduction. A former Formula One World Champion, he also champions the rights of people with learning disabilities and is a hard working and committed ambassador for halow. halow is registered charity number 1116773.

Snaky Lane Volunteers Welcome some “New Wildlife”

The Snaky Lane Wildlife Reserve in Stratford Road, Ash Vale has recently welcomed some new wildlife species. Members of the wildlife group were on hand to help install a fabulous new sculpture that features carved images of many of the plants and animals that can be found on the site. Nick Speakman, the designer and carver from 3D Wood, worked closely with the Snaky Lane volunteers to create this impressive feature. This amazing and unique piece of sculpture has been carved out of a single stem of sustainable harvested cedar and commands a prominent position in the nature reserve. The owl at the pinnacle keeps a close watch over the pond, while the fox “disappears” at the base. The sculpture was funded with help from Surrey County Council’s Member Allocation Fund and will not only serve as a focal point but will also have an im-portant community use. Keith Boulnois,

chairman of the Snaky Lane Community wildlife Group, explains; “This superb piece of artwork will be used as a community commemorative sculpture where local residents and friends of Snaky Lane can mark the passing of loved ones by attaching personalised plaques to the pole. Our committee will authorize the plaques on an individual case by case basis and we will arrange for the engraving and installa-tion in return for a donation towards the upkeep of the re-serve. We are delighted with the outcome and are grateful to Councillor Marsha Moseley for her generous support, not only for this project but also for her support with Snaky Lane general-ly.”
