IV. Country STEM Education Challenges

• Identifying key challenges in your country esp on STEM education will help you to focus when you build country action plan later: What are the top 3 obstacles and challenges you face in STEM education in your country? (Below are Sample Topics; feel free to choose your own topics; please

identify and summarize only three areas). • very few research facilities available • K12 syllabi concentrates more on grades and mere

reproduction of information than promote higher order thinking skills / research

• Pure Sciences not followed as a career option as it offers low monetary opportunities

0. Action Plan Guidelines· This is your working document

· What do you want to accomplish· Who is going to do what· When is it going to get done· What resources did you see this week that you’d like to adapt for use· What resources do you need for your plan

· Tell us what helped you most, what is missing, and what needs improvement· As you work, post your Action Plan on the Ed Academy Community so that

others may observe your work (www.inteledacademy.org)· A report out of accomplishments is due Nov. 15

· Work with your Intel Education Manager to submit· Note: sample completed Action Plans from 2009 are on the Intel website:

I. High Level Goals• What do you want to accomplish for your school, region or

country? Look at long-term (3-5 years) and short-term goals (1-2 years)

• Long term goals– Improve the quality of science/mathematics education for

students & move away from rote-based/exam focused learning– Strengthen IRIS, as a way to motivate students towards research

based learning– Teacher professional development for STEM– Incentivize students (consider for admission to reputed colleges)

• Short term goals– THIS YEAR: Widen net for entries (via better coordination with

state fairs through NCERT and DST)– THIS YEAR: Improved visibility for IRIS (media coverage)– THIS YEAR: “Side shows” during IRIS - Arvind Gupta, etc.– THIS YEAR: More stakeholders (CSIR, Industry) - Stalls– 1-2 YEARS: Couple NCERT teacher training with IRIS

II. Objectives• How will you know you succeeded?• Please list the results you want to see;

– Increased number of admissible entries to IRIS– Increased success rate at ISEF– Adoption of progressive policies on STEM education, including curriculum and

teaching methods– Expand SRC to cover all regions

IRIS – Have more sessions, such as science-based toy making, experimental science sessions, etc.

1 session per day, in parallel with IRIS session

Shweta/BASE/SRC Nov 2010

IRIS – Get more stakeholders involved (CSIR, Industry)

Stalls by CSIR, CII Shweta Nov 2010
