National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week 2008

Celebrate April 20-26, 2008

The week of April 20-26, 2008, has been designated National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week with the following goals:

• Recognizing the vital contributions made to health care by medical laboratory science professionals;

• Recognizing the dedication of these men and women;

• Calling the public’s attention to the role of medical laboratory professionals in patient care; and

• Enhancing the image of laboratory medicine and those who practice it.

This Planning Guide summarizes some of the most successful strategies used over the years to promote “Lab Week.” The most important thing in promoting National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is to put your imagination to work and tailor your observance to the goals you set for your specific organization’s observance.

We urge you to check www.labweek.org to see how other organizations have celebrated Lab Week in the past. And if you come up with an idea that’s unique, make sure after the celebrations are over to let us know so we can share your success with your colleagues.

Every year since 1975, laboratorians across the country and, indeed, around the world have set aside one week during the year to celebrate the vital role they play in delivering test results for an almost limitless range of diseases.

This year is no different. Certainly, there’s a new theme, focusing on the test results that help return patients to good health. And there’s a new logo to add pizzazz to your celebrations. But the intent remains the same: to tell everyone you can about the importance laboratory medicine plays in today’s complex world of healthcare.

Setting Goals

One of the best ways to ensure the success of your celebration is to start by convening a committee—members of your staff, representatives of the public relations and/or marketing department, human resources, management, physicians and laboratory staff—to establish the goals for your observance. Make sure you include “having fun,” “informing the public” and “informing the rest of the staff ” in your goals.

Some other important things to remember about the planning process:

• Be excited about Lab Professionals Week - it’s contagious! If you’re excited, others will be too!

• Keep the theme of “Delivering Today’s Results for a Healthier Tomorrow” at the forefront of your planning efforts. Find ways to illustrate the theme.

• Explore ways of taking your story beyond the walls of the lab. Consider health fairs, schools, senior citizen residences, radio and television stations and newspapers as your allies.

Throughout this Planning Guide are dozens of commemorative items you can use to spice up your celebration – and say thanks to people in your organization.

Early Planning Actions

• Get the support of pathologists and administrators. That’s something you should do early on in the process—there’s no time like the present to do this.

• Order your commemorative items – especially pins,

Among the key findings of the 2005 ASCP Wage & Vacancy Report:

• Nearly 44% of laboratories report they are cur-rently experiencing difficulties recruiting or hiring medical laboratory personnel. • Certified MT (medical technologists) staff vacan-cies were higher than average in Far Western and North Eastern states. • The median average hourly wage continues to rise at about 3.5% annually; salaries rose by about 7% between 2003 and 2005. • Salaries tend to be higher in hospital and refer-ence laboratories and lowest in physicians’ office laboratories. • The majority of laboratories report their staff working 8-hour shifts but 30.5% of those surveyed indicated that work shifts could vary by as many as 4 hours.

Cookie ContestMercy Medical CenterClinton, IA

Laboratorians at Mercy Hospital in Clinton, IA, were encouraged to bake a big cookie and decorate it with a lab week logo from the ASCP website or create one of their own design.

Kim Smith, MLT(ASCP) said: “Later in the week when we had an open house, visitors were asked to ‘vote’ for their favorite cookie with contributions of money. The cookie with the most donations was the winner of a gift certificate. All money that was collected was given to a charity.

“We also recognized lab employees that have had perfect attendance over the past year and gave them a certificate of dedication and a lab week mug. From our lab of 38 employees, nine received a gift. They appreciated the fact that someone noticed!”

Gifts with Meaningby Valerie Evans, MT(ASCP), Senior Medical Technologist ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City, UT

Our 2007 Lab Week celebra-tion emphasized how each valued employee contributes to quality care. The company staged an on-going campaign of “get-ting to know each other,” so various departments would each understand the contri-butions of the others. Our celebration included our 4th annual “sister department” tours, a FilmFest, CE case studies, word games, and a presentation emphasizing the different ways all personnel contribute to quality care. Owned by the Univer-sity of Utah and founded in 1984, ARUP Laboratories has rapidly grown from fewer than 100 employees to over 2,000, working in 80 depart-ments. Here are some details about how each event was conducted:

FilmFest – complete with popcorn and a Film Critic’s Evaluation Sheet. We pro-vided videos and teleconfer-ences for all three shifts to earn continuing education credits. Four case studies were presented, also for continu-ing education credits, which included testing from many ARUP departments. Com-pleted case studies and word

games were entered into a drawing for prizes. The 4th annual “sister department” tours, which paired a labo-ratory section with a non-laboratory section, encour-aged personnel to tour each other’s work areas, get to know each other, and learn what their “sister depart-ment” contributes to quality care. PowerPoint – To emphasize that every ARUP employee has a part in providing qual-ity care, a PowerPoint presen-tation showed ARUP em-ployees from all facilities at work, described terms from the “Five Pillars of ARUP Culture” and ARUP’s Core Values, and ended with the question “What is your con-tribution to quality patient care?” This presentation played throughout NMLPW on Lab TVs (TV monitors located on prominent walls through-out the building). It was also available on our internal network. As stated in “The Five Pillars of ARUP Culture,” ARUP is committed to providing the highest qual-ity laboratory services to its clients while maintaining a culture of trust and respect for employees. Our 2007 NMPLW celebration em-phasized this commitment through each activity and was well received by all.

Early Planning Actions (cont’d.)posters and tray tents—early and display them well in advance of Lab Professionals Week to pique interest in the observance.

• Ask your state’s governor and/or your city’s mayor to issue a proclamation declaring April 20-26, 2008 to be National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. Check www.labweek.org for sample proclamations.

• Choose several laboratory professionals to act as spokespersons for your

organization and the profession. Then make them available to civic groups, PTAs, health clubs, and weight loss groups.

Making News

• Invite a reporter to your lab to see how things work—and what that work is.

• Work with media representatives to develop a story about your lab and its work. Perhaps the story is about the constant need for blood, or genetic testing, or how test results lead to diagnosis and treatment decisions and help monitor

diabetes and other diseases.

• A close working relationship with your organization’s public relations staff is critical. They’re the experts in media and promotion and marketing, so not only should they be involved in the planning process, they need to be involved in helping you plan your media strategy.

• Some lesser-known media outlets to remember:

*Local cable TV public access channels*Alternative newspapers (usually found in larger cities)*Community websites*Church and school newsletters and/or bulletins*Print and email newsletters produced by other organizations, such as the local heart, cancer or other organization would help you publicize Lab Professionals Week.*Your local city hall might help you distribute a small flyer in water or sewer bills. Do the same with the utility companies in your community.

Educate Colleagues, Patients and the Public

Here are some great celebration tips that ASCP has received from laboratories that have held successful celebrations. You might find the perfect idea for your observance of National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week in 2008 among them.

•Conduct laboratory tours for hospital employees. Make sure it is interesting, educational, and informative.

• Invite nurses to shadow laboratory staff for two hours on a typical workday. Ask nurses if laboratory staff could shadow them for two hours. Job shadowing can help improve understanding of each other’s work and improve communication and good working relationships.

• Conduct a laboratory open house for patients and patients’ families.

• Invite the CEO to an informal gathering to get to know laboratory staff and use the opportunity to showcase your work.

• Sponsor a health and safety fair at your facility or at a shopping mall, school, senior citizen or other community gathering place.

• Program your departmental answering machine to give a new Lab Professionals Week greeting every day for use when clients are on hold.

• Use your organization’s website to post the Lab Professionals Week logo and theme with a message from the lab director. If you have the time and materials, work with your IT or PR department to create a special Lab Professionals Week section on yourwebsite.

• Add a link on your website to the ASCP Lab Professionals Week website, www.labweek.org.

• Develop a special Lab Professionals Week newsletter or flyer to distribute throughout your organization. Use it to promote your NMLPW activities, inform colleagues about laboratory programs and services, and tell other health care professionals how to make the best use of laboratory services.

• Set up an educational exhibit in a high-traffic location (shopping malls, schools, libraries, government offices, senior citizens centers, or hospitals). It can be as simple as a poster on a table, plus some additional materials and a member of the lab staff to provide hands-on demonstrations of basic lab tests or showing what cells look like under a microscope.

• Along the same lines, create a school exhibit that explains the role of medical technologists, technicians and

Celebrate with Laboratory Staff

• Select different themes for each day of Lab Professionals Week and celebrate the accomplishments of staff in different areas of the laboratory. • Hold a breakfast, luncheon or other function for laboratory staff. Ask laboratory suppliers or vendors to sponsor coffee and soda breaks or other functions. Ask them to join you during the week to talk about the equipment they provide and what’s on the horizon.

• Honor laboratory staff for exceptional attendance or for going the extra mile to get their jobs done.

• Adopt familiar games (word hunt or crossword puzzle, for instance) into special lab-oriented games. Hold contests to generate interest in Lab Professionals Week.

• Use the Lab Professionals Week logo to create banners, flyers and other printed materials. Post these in your department and throughout your facility where possible.Find original artwork at www.labweek.org.

Partnering with Rotary Club

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, PA, took its celebration of National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week into the community it serves by partnering with the Port Allegany, PA, Rotary Club to offer a Multiphasic Blood Analysis event.

Nearly 300 participants came to the local high school for the event, which involved drawing blood samples, analyzing them at the hospital’s laboratory and sending the results to participants and their identified physicians.

Laboratory personnel worked closely with other hospital departments – especially the Community Outreach Department and Patient Registration departments – to plan the event. But personnel from other hospital departments and divisions offered their services on the day of the event, too. The hospital’s employee newsletter recognized the efforts of the laboratory staff by noting, “While offering these types of community events calls for teamwork between many hospital departments, without the dedicated professionals in the medical laboratory, we wouldn’t be able to offer this valuable service to the communities we serve.
