LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
I’d like to start this letter by wishing the entire ASCE member-
ship a Happy New Year as this is the first newsletter of the year.
Rest assured that the FW ASCE Board is hard at work to ensure
this branch continues operating smoothly and is a valuable re-
source to our membership.
Over the last quarter we had the opportunity to honor several of
our branch members with different awards. At our joint meeting
with the UTA Student Branch we recognized our members who
received awards earlier in the year at CECON: Travis Attanasio,
Government Civil Engineer Award; Kimberly Cornett, Profes-
sional Service Award; Ron Lemons, Lifetime Service Award; and
Jim Williams, Lifetime Service Award. Additionally, at our No-
vember meeting we recognized Glenn Goss and Philip Mala-
chowski, both of whom received our 2018 Lifetime Member
Recognitions.
Another member who received recognition this year was Andrea
Taylor. She is this year’s recipient of the “ASCE Edmund Fried-
man Young Engineer of the Year” award. Her award was an-
nounced at our January branch meeting followed by a formal
presentation at this year’s TSPE Fort Worth E-Week banquet.
After knowing and working with Andrea through ASCE for sev-
eral years, this award is well deserved and I look forward to see-
ing her continue to be a part of ASCE for years to come.
This year our branch will be hosting the Fort Worth-Dallas joint
branch meeting in July. Several sponsorship opportunities will
be available so be on the lookout for these in the coming months.
Lastly, I would like to encourage all members to visit our branch
website (http://branches.asce.org/ft-worth/). In the resources
section you can find copies of PDH certificates for past meetings
you attended.
Sincerely,
Austin Baird, P.E., M. ASCE

Worth Branch has an account bal-
ance in good standing. Please note
that the Fort Worth Branch is a
Section 501.3(c)(3) non-profit or-
ganization.
We encourage all members to pay
for meetings online. Doing so auto-
matically enters you into a drawing
for a $25 gift card.
We appreciate and thank all of the
members and firms that continue to
support the Fort Worth Branch!
Fort Worth ASCE is pleased to announce Andrea Taylor as the winner of the
2019 ASCE Fort Worth Branch “Edmund Friedman Young Engineer of the
Year” award. This award recognizes younger members in ASCE that exhibit
outstanding contributions to the public welfare of the engineering profes-
sion.
Andrea currently serves as a Director on the Board of the ASCE Fort Worth
Branch and has previously served in several other capacities, including as
Hospitality Chair and Membership Chair.
Andrea is a graduate from The University of Texas at Arlington with a B.S.
and M.S. in civil engineering. Shortly after completing her bachelor’s de-
gree Andrea joined Mycoskie McInnis Associates (mma). mma is a profes-
sional civil engineering, surveying, landscape architecture, and planning
firm located in the heart of downtown Arlington, Texas. mma has been
serving the land development needs of public and private entities since
1999. Andrea is licensed in the State of Texas as a Profession-
al Engineer and is currently a Project Manager who serves mma’s clients in
developing residential subdivisions and commercial properties across the
DFW Metroplex.
In addition to her contributions to the Fort Worth Branch, Andrea is an av-
id volunteer in her community. Andrea serves as the Delta Delta Delta Ar-
lington Alumnae Chapter President, volunteers with the Young Women
Leadership Academy through CREW, and serves as a member of the Plan-
ning and Zoning Commission for the City of Hurst.
In her free time Andrea enjoys spending time with her husband and two
dogs.
We congratulate Andrea on this achievement and look forward to her con-
tinued contributions to Fort Worth ASCE!
Tarleton State University Update
Edmund Friedman Young Engineer of the Year
The Tarleton State ASCE Student Chapter held their first meeting of the
semester during the first week back to school. Dr. Glenn Goss and Jay
Garris from the national office of Chi Epsilon attended the meeting and
provided an interview preparation course that included mock interviews
and a resume clinic to prepare the students for the A&M career fair the
following week.
The TSU practitioner advisors have attended three of the student meet-
ings this semester and helped the student chapter host their guest speak-
ers. The practitioner advisors will continue providing guest speakers for
the student meetings for the remainder of the semester and are also set-
ting up a student field trip to a local geotechnical lab.
Tarleton is providing funding for the students to attend the ASCE Stu-
dent Symposium this year in Padre Island where they will compete in the
concrete frisbee and bowling competitions.

Program
As the new year turns over, the UT Arlington ASCE student chapter is
making great strides to bring prosperity to UT Arlington by holding new
officer elections, helping organize a Civil Engineering Christmas Banquet,
showing off the student chapter at the UTA Activities Fair, and pouring a
concrete canoe.
UTA ASCE held an election for new officers in November 2018. Candi-
dates prepared a speech describing why they want to be a leader in UTA
ASCE and how their experience can improve the organization as a whole.
Three new officers were elected: Hayden Lewis (Industry Liaison), Alan
Morales (Ambassador), and Marcos Sosa (Social Chair). We are looking
forward to what UTA ASCE is capable of during the spring semester!
The UTA Civil Engineering Department kicked off the holiday season with
a Christmas banquet, which came to fruition through the valiant efforts of
UTA ASCE. It was hosted at the Sheraton Hotel and open to all civil engi-
neering faculty, staff, and graduating seniors. The night began with a few
words from the Department Chair, Dr. Abolmaali, and continued with Dr.
Williams recapping the fall semester and his aspirations for future semes-
ters. Everyone had a great time, and it was a worthwhile event to wrap up
the fall semester.
The Activities Fair at UTA is an important event, as many future leaders
are found there. Additionally, it is a great place to encourage students to
get involved in ASCE. The event was held in January, and the student
chapter successfully interested many students in joining UTA ASCE!
The UTA concrete canoe is progressing; the team poured their canoe suc-
cessfully. As the Student Symposium in South Padre draws closer, the en-
tire team is working hard to create a high-quality product that is capable of
ranking higher than in previous years. This past weekend the team pad-
dled hard at Lake Arlington and participated in Camp Gladiator! UTA
ASCE is looking forward to competing in this year’s concrete canoe compe-
tition.
Awesome job UTA ASCE! Go MAVS!

History and Heritage
1980 – Fort Worth Branch ASCE President, Gary Teague, extend-
ed thanks to Fort Worth’s Mayor, Woodie Woods, for participating
in the dedication of a Historical Marker for the Paddock Via-
duct. The historical marker reads:
Low-water crossing and ferries originally provided the
only access across the Trinity River at this location,
connecting the downtown area of Fort Worth with
northern sections of the city. A two-lane suspension
bridge, constructed near this site in the 1890s, proved
inadequate for the growing population. This span, de-
signed by the St. Louis firm of Brenneke and Fay, was
built in 1914. It was the first reinforced concrete arch in
the nation to use self-supporting, reinforcing steel. The
bridge is named in honor of B.B. Paddock, former State
Legislator and Mayor of the City. (1980)
B.B. Paddock was the 9th mayor of the City of Fort Worth from
1892 – 1900.

Multi-Regional Leadership Conference
The 2019 Multi-Regional Leadership Conference for Regions 3, 6, and 7 was held on February 8-9 in Dallas. The con-
ference included the Workshop for Section and Branch Leaders, the Central Region Younger Member Council, and the
Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders. Fort Worth ASCE had two members in attendance: Allison Stamper and
Kameron Boggan. In each of the workshops, our two members were amongst other leaders, Younger Members, and
students from Regions 3, 6, and 7 where they were trained in leadership to better engage their chapter and community.
Payal Kotecha is currently a post-doctoral research associate and adjunct professor in the Department of Civil Engi-
neering at the University of Texas at Arlington. She contributed to the finite element analysis of pavement utility
cuts for asphalt and concrete pavements, and proposed new specifications for the City of Fort Worth. She has also
taught several graduate and undergraduate courses.
Payal received her PhD from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2018. Her research focus was on the feasibility
of using synthetic fibers in complex structural applications with negligible conventional reinforcements. She inves-
tigated the behavior of synthetic fiber-reinforced concrete deep beams with discontinuity regions by conducting
large-scale laboratory experimental tests with different fiber volume fractions and performing comprehensive three-
dimensional finite element analyses. Her research results revealed that synthetic fibers are a viable replacement for
most of the conventional reinforcements in deep beams with discontinuity regions. Her dissertation was supervised
by the department chair, Dr. Ali Abolmaali.
Payal also served as an Assistant Professor at the Gujarat Technological University in India for four years. In addi-
tion to her research and academic experience, she was employed as a structural engineer for four years, and was a
member of the team that analyzed and designed the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium at Khandheri in India.
