Our VisionWe envision a world endowed with the wealth of knowledge and the strength of

discrimination.

We envision a system, which is a healthy breeding ground for the sprouting, culturing

and dissemination of the whole gamut of knowledge in a wholesome and holistic

manner for the well-being of humankind.

WWe envision a human being empowered with wholesome knowledge, which makes

one an enabler and facilitator in the deep search and striving of every human being for

that knowledge.

WWe envision a system wherein there is a great interplay and exchange of ideas,

thoughts, feelings and actions, which develop people empowered with noble character

and wholesome values. They go out into the fields of action to build a world of love,

harmony, peace and knowledge. They follow the path of ‘Dharma’ and give a clear

direction in every thought and human endeavor.

Our MissionTo provide value-based education and mould the character of the younger generation

through a system of wholesome learning, so that their earnest endeavour to achieve

progress and prosperity in life is matched by an ardent desire to extend selfless service

to the society, one complementing the other.

There are two types of education- education for aliving and education for life. When we study in acollege, striving to become a doctor, a lawyer, or anengineer, that is education for a living. On the otherhand, education for life requires an understandingof the essential principles of spirituality; it is aboutgaining a deeper understanding of the world, ourminds, our emotions, and ourselves. We all knowthat the real goal of education is not to create peoplewho understand only the language of technology;the main purpose of education should be to imparta culture of the heart, a culture based on spiritualvalues.

Communication through technology has made theworld a small place yet there is so much of a division.Today’s world needs people who express goodnessin their words and in action with which the darknessprevailing in today’s society will be dispelled and thelight of peace and non-violence will once againilluminate this earth. Let us work together towardsthis goal.

Message from

DeanSalutations to beloved AMMA, our Chancellor

Amrita School of Business entered its second phase in 2009,with the launch of the MBA programme in three new campusesat Amritapuri, Bengaluru and Kochi. Our Bengaluru campusalso launched the Executive MBA programme. Both the MBA as well as the Executive MBA programmes at Bengaluru arebeing offered in collaboration with the State University of New York – University at Buffalo (SUNY - UB). In addition, ASB sawthe first batch of its students visiting Sweden, Germany and Bulgaria as EURECA exchange scholars. Another batch is rightnow in Italy under the India4EU programme.

All of this expansion and international linkages are happening in a broader global economic context. The businesscommunity is increasingly feeling the need for managers with stronger ethical and moral values.

Concerns with the global climate change are also receiving increasing attention from leaders in business and government.

India as a nation and Indian managers are expected to play a much stronger role in the global business arena.

Amrita School of Business has been emphasizing the role of managers towards the larger society as well as the environment, right from its inception. Our focus on value based management education derives strength and justification from therecent developments. We are confident to be able to respond to these global needs, and develop young managers readyto meet the emerging challenges, and contribute towards creating a more equitable and more harmonious world. Ourvision and mission, our leadership, coupled with our excellent faculty as well as state-of-the-art infrastructure are all gearedtowards fulfillment of this objective.

It is my privilege to welcome you to the portals of this unique university, particularly at this critical juncture.

May AMMA bless us all.

Amrita School of Business : Committed to the twin pillars of quality and values, the Amrita School of Business(ASB) has carved a unique niche for itself among Indian business schools in a period of last 15 years. ASB startedoffering full-time MBA programs in the year 1996 and the batch of 2011-13 will be its 16th. The two year full-time MBAprogram has grown from 16 students, 5 faculties, and single campus in year 1996 to 300 students, 35 faculties and fourcampuses (Amritapuri, Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Kochi) today. Amrita School of Business is currently ranked 28th

nationally1 amongst top B-Schools in India (Including the IIMs).

Core strengths : One of the key strengths of ASB is its background and experience of its faculty members2 drawnfrom the finest management institutes and world class organisations from both India and abroad. ASB’s diverse andtalented faculty pool, with enviable credentials, bring an optimum blend of academics and industry experience todeliver contemporary & world class management education from both theoretical and real world perspectives. Addedto this an innovative curricula, excellent infrastructure and the blessings of Satguru Sri Sri Mata AmritanandamayiDevi (Amma), our Chancellor, ASB becomes a young and vibrant place of deep learning and character moulding.Today, academicians, entrepreneurs, executives, researchers and scientists all come under one roof to deliver value tostudents at Amrita. Amma’s compassion and love that cuts across the barriers of nationality, race, caste and religion, acts as loving glue that holds such a diverse talent together. The full-time faculty members have post graduate and doctoral degrees from Berkeley, Cornell, Kellogg, New YorkUniversity, University of Texas-Austin, BITS Pilani, IITs, IIMs, IRMA, JNU and other top schools. All the five streams of specialization (Finance, HR, Marketing, Operations and Systems) are offered to all studentsacross all the four locations. Students have option to take one or more streams. Apart from the regular curricula aspecial emphasis is given to inculcate corporate etiquette and personal grooming of the students. The managementprogramme at the Bengaluru campus is an international master’s dual-degree twinning programme called “MBA-MS”.This is a joint collaboration programme between Amrita School of Business and the School of Management atUniversity of Buffalo, New York. In addition to fulltime MBA programme, the Bengaluru campus also offers an

Nationally representative: With every passing year, ASB has acquired a more national profile, with our studentscoming from all parts of the country. More than a third of ASB students in our newest batch came from North or Eastof India.

A high proportion of women: The percentage of girls has been consistently high at ASB, ranging over the yearsfrom around a quarter of the batch to a third of the batch.

A social mandate: The students profile at ASB is different from other B-Schools of similar rankings. Here studentscome from all strata of society, many of them from very humble back grounds. In their own words, ASB serves as thetraining ground and launch pad for their great leap up in Indian society.

Formal mentoring process: All students are assigned to faculty guides who assist, guide and support them in allmatters related to their academics and life at ASB. This aids in developing a healthy interchange between faculty andstudents ensuring the overall well being of each student.

Availability and accessibility of ASB faculty: The Dean, the ASB Student Advisor, the PGP Chair and PGPCommittee, and the Student Affairs Committee are available on campus to students for counseling - to discussacademic and personal matters. Students can also approach a faculty member of their choice. Women students arecounseled by female faculty members when women issues are involved; otherwise, all students are counseled in ageneral way. The Hostel wardens are also available for students to discuss personal matters. Grievances may beaddressed to the PGP Chair and/or the Dean.

The Future : Amrita School of Business is committed to deliver world class management education. In order to fulfillthis commitment, the top management of Amrita University has taken a strategic decision for ASB to go for AACSBInternational – (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation. As a first step towards this,ASB has become a member of AACSB International. The global average time for getting accredited is 3-1/2 years. ASBaspires for getting accredited within this time frame.(Footnotes) 1 According to “Career 360"Survey, Feb 2010 2 http://www.amrita.edu/asb/faculty/

”Education they say is an intangible asset, Value unknown until you reflect youraccomplishments. Mine is no different, in hindsight as I wade through my career, havefound myself applying my learnings at campus In many a decision, both at business andlife. At ASB whenever I have heard the word ‘holistic education’ it always made mewonder. What exactly do they mean? It took me years and some maturity to realize andappreciate what it meant and value it has added to me as an individual. I would alwayscherish my years at ASB “

Joji John, 1999 Batch, Senior Product Manager, Oracle“I think ASB has always believed in an understated positioning. The schoolnever seems to overtly project itself, be it about its renowned faculty, itsimpressive infrastructure or its strong and growing alumni. I am really happy

thinking too much, I decided to do an MBA myself and I ended up joining ASB. What Ididn’t anticipate one bit was how profoundly ASB would ultimately change the way Ithink, and my career path. I came to ASB expecting to learn about business after whichI planned on doing a job for a few years and then joining my father’s business. However, after joining ASB I found that my interest in accounting and finance began to rapidlygrow, primarily due to the way these subjects were taught by ASB professors. Noticingmy interest, my accounting and finance professors suggested that I pursue a Ph.D. inBusiness Administration. Not only did they encourage me but they also provided mewith a lot of help and guidance through the application process as I decided to taketheir advice and pursue a Ph.D. For this and for so many other things, I am very gratefulto ASB and my professors at ASB. I realize now just how critical my ASB experience hasbeen in shaping my future.

Col. Korath V. Mathew(Class of 2002), Director, Akshaya, Kerala State IT Mission“My life at Amrita School of Business was a turning point in my career. Here inmy present job as Joint Director (Automation) I have been able to develop a

comprehensive automation plan, namely, WAN based on VPN, ERP solution and BPR forthe Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army. I attribute my professional competence tothe state of the art education and the continuous support I have had from ASB. The maindifferentiator is that as alumni I have been able to continuously seek and obtainknowledge from the Institute. This has given me the confidence to face the challenges asI can bank upon Amrita for any knowledge related issues not only because the instituteis supportive to the alumni but also because of the state of the art technology. The cleancampus, the serene atmosphere and the environment friendly outlook coupled with anexcellent infrastructure makes it an ideal cradle for harnessing knowledge

Manoj Kumar Das2000 Batch, Sr. Consultant-Human Capital, Deloitte Consulting“To tell you the truth, life was never easy at Amrita. Solving complex casestudies, giving innumerable presentations, attending classes late in the night!

None of them were easy. But it taught us to think, team-up and challenge ourselves.Today I see a distinct advantage that I have compared to so many others.”

ASB alumnus Dr. Maneesha posting on livemint.com on 2/9/08“The education I received from Amrita School of Business has completelychanged both my professional and personal life. What I feel extremely gratefulfor, is the value based education I received. The good qualities inherent in me

M. Thirumalai, 2001 Batch, Key Account Manager – South, Wrigley India Pvt.Ltd., BengaluruIn the incessant journey of my FMCG sales career, every end leads to anothercreation. The business at all levels – regional or global, taught only the

importance of BASICS in the respective domain. Every growth is the consequence of hard work, fortitude, resilience and strong foundation on your fundamentals. Even mymicro stint with IIM-A taught no-different from what I imbibed at ASB. Every time I visitthe campus, I take back a treasure. Pedagogy

Amrita School of Business stresses the need for holisticeducation for those aspiring to pursue MBA program.Keeping in line with the principle that one’s education shouldbe for life, as well as for living, the curriculum has beendesigned and updated to provide for a balance betweencourses focusing on functional aspects for managing abusiness and personal aspects for managing oneself.

Modern Teaching methods in practice other thanthe lecture method

The philosophy: Learning at ASB is a synergy of uniqueteaching methodologies comprising of lectures, casediscussions, seminars, presentations, group activity, businessgames, role plays, soft skills training, and field projects. Atypical student day consists of at least three classroomsessions of seventy five minutes duration, one hour of hands-on experience in the computer centre, and at least two hoursof course preparatory work (both individually and in groups)for every one hour of classroom session; requiring on anaverage, ten to twelve hours of total work each day.

Case study method: The case study method, a staple ofthe top B-Schools in the world finds extensive use in ASB

especially in the second year elective courses. ASB is amember of the European Case Clearing House (ECCH) – thepremier repository for management cases in the world. Inaddition to the use of management cases in classes, studentshave also been encouraged to write live cases in certaincourses – such as in International Business, where groups ofstudents wrote up on the globalization experiences ofcompanies in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Role plays: Role plays find extensive use in courses suchas Business Communication, Organizational Behavior, Salesand Distribution Management, and Cross CulturalManagement.

Business games: The course – Cross Cultural Management– also features a unique, and extremely powerfulpedagogical device – management games created by studentgroups to test and teach cross-cultural concepts.

Live projects: Many ASB courses involve fieldwork wherestudents interact with corporates and other institutions incourse related live projects. The courses utilizing field basedprojects cut across the different academic disciplines. In some

Amrita School of Business

3 6

Page 39: ASB_AdmBro2011Final.pdf

courses such as Marketing Research, the ASB alumni mentorand occasionally commission the project work. In general, the group projects have proven to be excellent tools tobring class-room learning to life; to connect the studentswith their alumni and industry; and to give an experience ofthe ‘real world’ dynamics to the students, many of whomhave no prior industry experience.

Summer projects: Every summer, first year MBA studentsundertake industry projects of 8-week duration on variousfunctional areas of management on company premises. Thispaves way for a confident landing in corporate assignmentsafter their MBA Program. Students are provided a goodexposure to interact with professionals from the industryon different functional areas, which enhances their caliberto face corporate placements. This year, as an ASB first, eachstudent was assigned an ASB alumni as a summer projectmentor.

Value education: ASB believes in imparting an educationfor life along with an education for a living. As a step in this

direction, the course Self Awareness and Personal Growth isan integral part of the curriculum for both years. This courseprovides an opportunity for holistic learning. It also involvesthe practice of yoga and meditation to help tide over thedemands of stress filled corporate life. In addition, a courseon “Managerial Values and Business Ethics” is taught as acore course in second year. This year, a new elective wasintroduced on ‘Management of Self for Success andHappiness.’ The emphasis on values ofcourse extends muchbeyond the formal coursework – it is reflected in almostevery choice we have made.

Field trips and industrial visits: Where possible, facultyincludes field trips to bring in a real-life experience ofconcepts being covered in class. These field trips may involvelocal industries (such as in Coimbatore and Tirupur), andovernight stays (such as in Bengaluru and Chennai). Forexample, as part of the Management of Non-ProfitOrganisations course second year MBA students visitedBHEL and RANE in Trichy on August,2010.

Amrita School of Business

3 8

Page 41: ASB_AdmBro2011Final.pdf

ASB is one of the handful of business schools in India tooffer wide choice of elective courses to final year MBAstudents to enable them specialize. For example in 2009-10,students had a choice of fifty-eight electives. These electivesare offered in all the five areas of specialization, namely,Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing,Operations and Systems.

Businesses today have moved beyond profit to show anappreciation for values and ethics in the workplace. TopCEOs have recognized that success in business without theapplication of values is not real success. In this regard, a keydifferentiating aspect of the Amrita MBA program is thefocus on values for the work place as well as society.

SAP is a part of the MBA curriculum and the ERP course usesSAP extensively. The course on “Management Beyond Profit”included live projects on migrant labour, in social marketingand field visits to leading social entrepreneurs and NGOs.The pedagogy in many courses includes case discussion, games, role plays and live projects that aid in student’sconceptual clarity. Students across the world have showedresistance and cynicism when courses on Managerial Valuesand Business Ethics or courses like the “Management of theSelf” are taught, but the instructor at ASB through his uniqueteaching methodology has succeeded in breaking thisresistance. Several students have reported that these courseschanged their lives.
