Editorial

The workshops have been run and Phase Two is done, all in what seems to have been the speed of sound!

The facilitators did what they could and now the ball is in the learners’ and teachers’ court. The vari-ous Department of Basic Education District Offices now have the responsi-

bility of running the regional rounds in order to select the learners who will rep-resent the regions in the Provincial Contests.

Phase Three is indeed upon us! The MUNSA team has been hard at work: caterers had to be briefed, venues had to be organised and facilitators had to be ready to en-sure that all workshops were a success.

Facilitators had to travel far, to rural areas, on

dangerous roads, and ensure that the workshops turned out a success. Check out the photos on the last page to see what a journey the YCA Workshops have been, for everyone!

Once you are a part of YCA, you will forever want to stay connected to this revolutionary ini-tiative. Giving back and empowering the youth with the gift of communi-cation is worth more than any pay cheque I will

ever receive!

Good luck to each and every participant, Event Manager and Provincial Co-ordinator - we are in the last stretch of YCA!

Lots of loveMarine

On the 8th of May, 2010 Nwabisa read out my name as the KZN Provincial Winner. I was commissioned with a hefty and mam-moth duty to go into nationals and acquire as many skills and learn as many tricks of this trade.

So my attending of the national competition was not solely for my own personal advance-ment as a speaker, but to accomplish the task embedded upon me by my province.

On February 19 of this year it was with great honour and pride to go back into the depths and pits of KZN to

entrust and empower my people with these qualities.

The process of transfer and contact with the learners and teachers had to be the most beautiful and eye opening experience of my life. To see how the students yearn for such events and empower-ment. It made me see how much of an im-pact such programmes have on people.

One teacher said to me that YCA is the highlight of the year. It never gets better than this for the learners, and this year’s plan is to go all out. Their re-gionals even have prizes for the learners.

For some, the highlight would just be going to the outskirts of the province, spending over 12 hours on the road to and from V r y h e i d , d r i v i n g 1068km in two days, traveling through all kinds of weather.

potential successor, with the necessary skills I have acquired from my fellow national finalists of 2010 and the MUNSA family, as well as teachers.

Hopefully they can go back to the classroom and manifest the skills they have acquired and impart them to every single student they come in contact with.

Passing on the knowledge

For me, however, the true highlight was going through all this just to equip the future, the leaders of tomorrow. To equip the learners, and my

The YCA Facilitators’ Work-shop held at St John’s Col-lege in Johannesburg was the prelude to a flurry of emails, calls and coordi-nation as part of the pre-paratory process for the Limpopo and North West workshops. Traditionally, these provinces can be quite complex to coordinate given the locations which almost pry into Zimbabwe and Botswana.

As Murphy must have his law, the workshops in Lim-popo and the North West fell on consecutive week-ends and I anticipated that by the end of that process I would be a few strands short of sanity and probably not the friendliest creature in my house.

There was a relay of com-munication between the DoBE representatives in Limpopo and the North West and intense negotiations with caterers

in the weeks leading up to the workshop. Bonolo Cebe was incredibly helpful and this process has refined our clairvoyant abilities.

Well before the sun had spilt out the night on Friday March 4, the team of Lim-popo Workshop Facilitators took to the road with alacrity and enthusiam. Kgothatso Mampa got taken on a Formula 1 race through the twisted mountains of Tzaneen with his partner in crime Zain Patel.

Daniel Sher and myself discovered that 5fm goes where even Vodacom doesn’t connect as we scoured through the famous Hendrik Verwoed Tunnel en route to Dzanane.

The team executed a swarm of electric workshops and each of us, from the learn-ers, to the educators, to the facilitators ourselves grew tremendously. In keeping with the ground-breaking flavour of

the North, Zinhle Mkhabela and Matsetsebale Tleane closed the Jane Furse workshop with a powerful belting of the National An-them.

The following week, another team of facilitators set out incandescent with energy and skill to the North West. Despite trying desperately

era crew who are collating snippets of the YCA journey for a promotional DVD.

As the Provincial Co-ordinator for both the North West and Limpopo I can confidently attribute the successful workshops and phenomenal growth that we enjoyed on this journey to the amazing team spirit and the unequivocally potent guidance I received from Abdullah, Nwabisa and Me-hfooza.

The most coherent capture of my experience over the past few months is peeled out of ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ In response to the curious caterpillar’s question; “who are you?” Alice replies; “at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.”

to convince me that they re-quired a passport to get to Taung, Kgothatso Mampa and Ishmael Mbetse facili-tated 2 fantastic workshops and this was matched by a dynamic and enriching set of workshops facilitated by Bonolo Cebe and Sibusiso Khoza.

The Rustenburg workshop was met by an excited cam-

“Despite trying desperately to convince me that they required a passport to get to Taung...”
