dolce & Gabbana’s Alta moda tribute to Sophia Loren in naples, her home city

Sophia Loren with Domenico Dolce (left) and Stefano Gabbana at their Alta Moda show in Naples.

Sophia Loren’s still got it. This month, Dolce and Gabbana’s Alta Moda show was held in Naples – at the request of Sophia herself.

As the 81-year-old Oscar winner, Sophia Loren enters the street flanked by stressed security and Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the fans go wild. Having grown up in a town close to the city, it was Loren who chose Naples as the city of focus for this season’s show of Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda collection.

Some of Loren’s early roles involved the city – small parts in Italian Cinecitta productions like L’Oro di Napoli.

“We want to talk about Sophia, Napoli and Napoli culture,” Dolce explains as he takes us through outfits backstage before the show. “There are dresses taken from her many iconic film roles. There’s pizza, soccer and even[the Napoli footballer] Diego Maradona,” he adds.

“There are some dresses which are very light, very Sophia, very sexy,” says Gabbana, pointing to more whimsical, camp pieces (it is Dolce and Gabbana, after all) such as a hat affixed with a huge baba (brought to the region by French chefs in the 18th century and hugely popular) and one with a giant slice of pizza.

“She loves the rose,” Gabbana adds, “so we use a lot of the flowers in the collection.”

“it’s just Dolce and Gabbana moment for Sophia. Because this collection doesn’t work if it’s for another place, person or city. This collection is for Sophia Loren, Napoli and this street. We chose this place, we work around this place.”

The melding of Neapolitan culture with a sartorial tribute to Loren’s career made for the brand’s most eclectic, engaged and interesting Alta Moda show yet.

“We came to Napoli because of Sophia Loren. She’s the inspiration for this whole collection,” says Dolce. “Each summer, it’s a different city we take inspiration from. They asked her what city. She wanted Napoli.”

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Lab Division of the Vision Council announced the industry veterans who will be recognized during the Directors’ Choice Award and 17th Annual Lab Division Hall of Fame celebration on Sept. 14.

The division named James C. Tooke, regional account manager for Zyloware Eyewear, as the 2016 recipient of the Directors’ Choice Award. Nominees were selected based upon their contribution to the optical laboratory industry. Each nominee is required to be an active member in the Vision Council for at least 20 consecutive years. This award honors individuals and companies that have made outstanding contributions to the ophthalmic industry.

Tooke will be recognized alongside the following 2016 Hall of Fame inductees: Craig Giles of Walman Optical, Michael White of the Vision Council, Christie Walker editor of Lab Talk Magazine, Dick Whitney of Carl Zeiss Vision and John Young of Colts Laboratories.

vision Council Announces directors’ Choice Award Recipient, james C. Tooke of Zyloware Eyewear

“I have been working with Jim Tooke for a very long time, and he is more than just a coworker to me. He is someone I look up to with a lot of respect and has been a great mentor for me over the years. I will never forget that he took me on my first Zyloware sales trip to Denver, Colorado in the middle of December... Literally I will never forget it! Brrrrrrrr it was cold! Gotta love him! Congratulations Tooke!” – Cathy Roman, Account Manager at Zyloware

Jim Tooke has been with Zyloware Eyewear

since 1979. With over 37 years experience

with the company, Jim’s primary territory

is in the midwest area, where he has opened

dozens of new accounts while

maintaining existing relationships during his

time with Zyloware.

Congratulations jim Tooke!

In the fall of 1961, I met Jim at Memphis State University where we not only became fraternity brothers but best friends. Little did we know that 55 years later, we both would have represented our great company, Zyloware, for over thirty fantastic years. Throughout these decades, we have shared many great moments of fun, laughter, and last, but not least a few birdies and a whole lot of bogeys on the links. To this day, Jim Tooke remains my devoted and faithful friend. – Bill Vescovo, Regional Account Manager at Zyloware

“Jim Tooke was one of the best Season’s Greetings presents I ever received. Jim started right before the holidays in 1978, and we began traveling together in ‘79. Traveling with Jim is like traveling with a brother – I still look forward to it this day.” – Henry Shyer, Vice Chairman at Zyloware914.708.1200 • WWW.ZYLOWARE.COM

STETSON: PROUDLY WESTERN

Inside Stetson’s Headquarters

Stetson Worldwide is most known for its wide-brimmed cowboy hats founded by John B. Stetson in 1865. The company enjoyed success with the popularity of his iconic “Boss of the Plains” hat, and by the early 1900s, the company’s Philadelphia plant had grown into the world’s largest hat factory. Unfortunately, the trends of the mid-1960s put the company through some major setbacks.

By the 70s, sales plunged immensely and the factory was eventually shut down. But like a true cowpoke, Stetson persisted. The company now not only sells fashionable hats, its expanded their products to include things like fragrances, home goods, boots, and branded bourbon.

Izumi Kajimoto became the CEO of Stetson Worldwide in 2012 and has been in the fashion industry for about 30 years. Before arriving to Stetson, Kajimoto worked at high-fashion brands like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan.

On why the Western-themed brand is based in Manhattan:There’s a reason why we’re in New York. There’s a reason why the people who staff this office are of the background that we are; it’s because we need to not follow but lead, and that’s where the idea of fashion, but also integrated with the idea of a viable, powerful legacy relevant-company has to have is knowing what people want, will covet as an object of desire maybe before they do.

Original story by Kai Ryssdal for Marketplace

It May be Based in New York, but Stetson is Proudly WesternOn the woes of American haberdashery:I’ve been doing this for a while, and relatively speaking I think American men tend to be more conservative compared to more fashion-conscious or just the average European and Asian man, but that’s part of the challenge. And, I think hats are a further challenge to that circumstance because it’s on your head. It’s more than the head, it’s the face. The hat covers your head, but it surrounds your face and as such it really is the most intimate article on your person.

Kajimoto’s take on building the brand’s identity:We have to have some sort of appeal that is emotional, something other than the absolutely practical and utilitarian. We have this history, and we have a romance that’s very, very ingrained and parallel to the history and romance of this whole country. If you want to look at it in a purely commercial sense, we need to tap into that and take advantage of that and maximize that. For our identity as a fashion company is dictated by our history, and I think it should be, this is our legacy and this is what we’re custodians of. We represent America in so many ways, and you can’t trivialize that and you can’t minimize that. All the crazy diversity is part of the American identity, and we need to be part of that. We should be.

Social media can be a great way of connecting with new people and catching up with friends and family. But it can also keep you from real life and face-to-face interactions. Too much social media can have negative effects on your mood and can be the cause of unhealthy emotions.

I find today more than ever people of all ages are forgetting how to have real, proper social interactions because they’re usually hiding behind their screens and become awkward when dealing with people face to face.

After getting some perspective, it’s important to find ways to be mindful and connect in real life. Here are some things I do to try to live more in the moment.

• When I’m out to dinner with friends and family, we all put our phones on the table; whoever reaches for theirs first gets the bill.

• When out at a show or concert, I take just a few pics and put my phone away so I can actually see the event live rather than through a tiny screen.

• When I’m driving, I don’t bother taking the phone out of my bag so that I’m not even tempted to text and drive. make it a point to notice everything: trees, flowers, shops, people, homes, signs, etc.

• Before going to sleep, I place my phone on silent and away from the bed.

• I add activities to my life that I can’t do with a device in hand, like hiking, Pilates, yoga, and meditation.

There’s nothing better than focusing on your own goals, your own life, and your own happiness. Just be present.

Project Runway Returns September 15th!Talk about a fashion moment: Project Runway is hitting a major milestone. The Lifetime reality TV series will begin its 15th season on September 15.

“Season 15 is going to be a historic season,” judge Zac Posen tells EW. “Get ready — get ready for great talent, get ready for a wild ride on that sewing machine.”

Of the designers joining this season, host Heidi Klum says there’s a lot of talent and innovation, which allows the show to stay fresh after 14 years. “We’re not tired of it yet,” she says. “The concept is the same but the people are different, the challenges are different, and our guest judges are different — and they always bring something great to the table, too.”

Guest judges for the season include actresses Priyanka Chopra, Emily Ratajkowski, Nina Dobrev, Camilla Belle, Jaime King, Shiri Appleby, Sabrina Carpenter, and Carly Chaikin as well as Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff, Project Runway Junior judge Kelly Osbourne, model Lucky Blue Smith, and Marie Claire editor-in-chief Anne Fulenwider.

Klum and Posen will return as judges alongside vet Nina Garcia (who calls this an “emotional” season) and designer mentor Tim Gunn. Season 15 of Project Runway premieres Sept. 15 at 9 p.m. ET on Lifetime.

Follow Project Runway on social media for more updates and information about the upcoming season, @ProjectRunway, or use the Project Runway hashtag, #ProjectRunway to share about your favorite moments!

Sophia Loren: Honorary Citizen of NaplesMILAN (AP) — Sophia Loren has been made an honorary citizen of Naples, the city that formed her and became the backdrop of many of her films.

Naples Mayor Luigi de Magistris honored 81-year-old Loren at a ceremony attended by 500 residents Saturday as the Neapolitan song “O sole mio” played.

Loren was wearing a black dress with a fuschia floral print and told the news agency ANSA that “I feel so much love.”

De Magistris said on Twitter that Loren and Naples have “intertwined hearts.”

Loren grew up near Naples, and her breakthrough role came in Vittorio De Sica’s “The Gold of Naples,” in 1954. She once famously told an interviewer that “I am not Italian. I am Neapolitan. It’s another thing!”

Violence in His Hometown of Baton Rouge: ‘We’ve Got to Get It Together’

Just weeks after the police shooting of Alton Sterling and days after the subsequent police ambush that left three Baton Rouge officers dead, Randy Jackson, music producer and former American Idol judge, is speaking out about the violence in his hometown.

“I am just horrified with what’s going on in the city,” Jackson, 60, tells PEOPLE at the 10-year celebration of his eyewear line, RandyJackson Eyewear. “Black lives matter but all lives actually matter. One injustice doesn’t just make another [injustice] go away.”

The Grammy winner says he doesn’t agree with the “eye for an eye” mentality and hopes for equality and peace in Baton Rouge and the rest of the world. “My heart and soul goes out to all the people there. We’ve got to get it together. We’ve got to understand each other. We’ve got to have communication. Two wrongs don’t make a right,” Jackson says.

Although Jackson walked away from American Idol in 2014, he’s staying busy thanks to his collaboration with Zyloware, which creates fashionable and affordable eyewear for men. He’s also producing new television shows, movies and music for upcoming artists. Even with all his new projects, the former session guitarist still misses sitting behind the Idol judges’ table – but not for the reason you might think.

Even with all his new projects, the former session guitarist still misses sitting behind the Idol judges’ table – but not for the reason you might think.

“I would say I miss some of the talent discovering, but I’ve done that all of my life. What I miss is the comradery with the team,” Jackson admits. “Me, Simon [Cowell], Paula [Abdul], all the producers and all the people involved – it really developed into family over the years.”

Jackson says the crew still stays in touch and gets together on occasion, but it doesn’t compare to the good old days.

“There’s nothing like that togetherness that we had on the road doing those auditions, having fun and having some laughs.”

Hue Knew This: Blue is the New BlackFrom July 2016 issue of 20/20 Magazine - Page 90

There is likely no category in the eyewear arena more ripe for focus and potential than the emerging power and pull of Millennials, long dubbed GenEYE at 20/20 with ongoing consideration and increasing regard. And perhaps there is equal impact in the premise that this emerging generation has a particular interest in the “Independent” aspect of much that enhances the opti-sphere when it comes to how GenEYE embraces the products they love and how they purchase those products.

Certainly keen on sourcing online opportunities, GenEYE is also quick to ditch if the service or quality is lacking via that Internet connection. And they don’t massively run to “big box” retailing. Their go-to is quite often the simpler privately-owned storefront based on principles of a one-on-one relationship dealing in products that range from but decidedly beyond the norms of designer and lifestyle branding.

And that further brings THIS particular feature of 20/20 into focus as a joint presentation of some of the products and passions on the minds of GenEYE in direct conjunction with one very specific POV: the current State of Independents on both sides of the dispensing table.
