The snow has melted and spring has finally arrived! But the
season of fraud is ongoing.
We at Aberdeen Federal Credit Union (FCU) see many different
forms of fraud. The following are two types we often see
perpetrated on our fellow members.
Millions of Americans use online dating sites or social media
sites in search of true love. Unfortunately, countless fraudsters
are prowling these same venues looking for a payoff at your
expense. These so-called Sweetheart Scams are on the rise.
Sweetheart Scams, also called Romance Scams, are a type of fraud in
which the perpetrator posts a fake online dating profile, builds
trust and an emotional bond with a legitimate love-seeker, and
eventually coaxes the victim to provide personal and account
information or to send funds.
Did you know that most text messages are opened within 15
minutes of receiving them? Phishing scams are not limited to
emails. More recently, it has been reported that people are
receiving text messages with suspicious links. Scammers are sending
messages with a link in the text asking you to verify your credit
card for “Security Reasons”. If you receive an official-looking
text message asking you to confirm your credit card for “Security
Reasons”, do not click on any of the links in the email. The links
may take you to the scammer’s site.
Aberdeen FCU has practices in place to help detect and prevent
wrongdoers from reaching your pocketbook. But you need to “Stay
Smart, Stay Secure!” As a member-owned cooperative, a credit
union’s success is literally tied to the financial health of the
