Notes from Father Tom… December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception unless that date falls on a Sunday, like it does this year. The feast will be celebrated on Monday but it is not a holyday of obligation when it is on the 9th. The feast celebrates the Church’s belief that Mary was conceived without original sin. Monday evening our communal penance service will take place at Saint Francis at 7 p.m. Reconciliation is an integral part of Advent. I encourage you to celebrate the sacrament. Several priests will be available. Recently someone told us that they were raising their collection amount and signing up for matching gift with the company they retired from. By increasing and matching it doubles their increase. If you need info on matching, just ask. Progressive, Lubrizol and G.E. are examples of companies that match. With year-end giving just around the corner, remember appreciated stock given to the parish can help your tax situation. For those of us who are 70½ years of age, required distributions from IRA’s can also be a great way to support the parish. The money given directly from an IRA to the parish does not enter your taxable income. I am not a tax expert so you really should talk to your tax consultant. For those who do not take a standard deductions, there can be an advantage to combining two years donations into one taxable year. We are fine with that and it may help your tax situation. Again, talk with tax people. Only two and a half weeks to Christmas.

Notes from Sister Noel Marra, O.S.U… Catechists are people who keep the memory

of God alive; they keep it alive in themselves and they are able to

revive it in others. ~Pope Francis

As I talk to parents, I can hear the stress of the season being expressed verbally or non-verbally. An added layer to the stress may be the awareness of new changes in the family whether it is becoming an “empty-nester” after years of children being in the home, or the worry for a member in the family who is diminishing in some ways, or now the family is composed of teen-age children. Parents are challenged to constant adapting. Life gives us plenty of ways to practice adapting. Right? In fact, our Ursuline Foundress, St. Angela Merici, a woman ahead of her times (16th c), modeled for us (Ursulines) her charism of “dynamic adaptability to the times”. This explains the changing ministry and lifestyles (e.g. cloistered, active-contemplative, missionary etc.) demonstrated in the Ursuline family world-wide over time. Yet what grounds the changes is the relationship one has with Jesus Christ and the Gospel. This is possible for all of us, not only for Ursulines. This same charism, which is one of the many gifts of the Holy Spirit to the Church, can give us insight into our role within family, within the Church and beyond. So what am I saying? First of all, hats off to all parents, as they juggle the dynamic changes which are on-going in their lives. Know that one learns how to juggle well by being grounded in a spiritual base. It is good seeing you in church each week, at times, worshipping, creating community over donuts and coffee, besides the numerous ways you connect to the world beyond our doors through food collection, serving in the Collinwood kitchen. I do know it is parents who are Eucharistic ministers, catechists, parish council members etc. For those who are past the most intense “juggling”, your mission may to encourage, affirm and support those who are overwhelmed in this moment of time. With the holidays ahead, this is a good time to do just that within

your family gatherings. Let us share our hearts rather than our judgments. That’s a good practice for all.

F P Parents must be like John the Baptist “a voice crying in the wilderness” in our consumer society. While society pressures us to shop until we drop the weeks until Christ-mas, you have the opportunity to “prepare the way of the Lord” in the lives of your children.

The holidays are fast approaching. The Giving Tree was put up earlier this year, due to many requests for early shopping. The gift tags will be placed on the tree in the Gathering area. Gift tags represent needed items for parish families. You have been very generous in the past, and we wish to thank you in advance for your generosity this year for our own parish families. Please make sure all tags are returned before Sunday, December 15th. Distribution to families is Sunday, December 15th after Mass.

C W Oplatki is available at the Desk in church and also, the Parish Center. The tradition of the Oplatki originated in Poland during Early Christian times. This Christmas custom began with a simple white wafer, baked from flour and water. The wafers are wonderfully designed to display Christmas images, such as the Nativity. This tradition can become a part of every family's Christmas traditions!

This symbolism is deepened by the fact that the name of the town where Jesus Christ was born, Bethlehem, means "House of Bread," which makes the Oplatki tradition an especially beautiful way to celebrate the charity and unity so characteristic of the Christmas season.

Tradition is just before the Christmas Eve meal the entire family will gather around the table with the Christmas wafers. Generally the eldest member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member with a blessing. This blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your loved one in the upcoming year - whether it be good health, success, or happiness. The wafer is passed from person to person until all have had a piece and all have been given blessings. The purpose of this act is primarily to express ones unconditional love and forgiveness for each member of his or her family.

P I ' M contains the traditional seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Messiah, and looking forward to his coming in glory, let us take a look at those gifts and see how we can use them. Wisdom is the gift of seeing God in creation. It means that we value the things of this world only as they help us to know and love God more. The second gift, understanding, follows from wisdom. We understand what God expects of us in dealing with creation and other people. This gift helps us know how to act in a world that seems to ignore God. Counsel follows from understanding as the gift of making correct judgments on how to act. For example, understanding can lead us to love others; counsel guides us to love them in appropriate ways.

Strength, or fortitude, is the gift that enables us to do those things inspired by understanding and counsel, even if they are difficult. John the Baptist displays that gift in the Gospel. Fortitude gave him the courage to die for his faith. Knowledge is similar to counsel in that we begin to see what God wants for us in this world. Knowledge leads us to deeper revelations of the truths of our faith. This can lead to the sixth gift, piety (seventh in Isaiah's text--"delight in the Lord"), a willingness to worship and love God, a desire to be close to God in prayer. The final gift, fear of the Lord, is the awe and wonder of recognizing how great God is, how much God loves us, and how much we want to stay close to God. And the desire to be close to God circles back to the wisdom with which we see God in creation. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

T Knowing Jesus as the One for whom the people of God have longed helps us to understand John the Baptist’s strong words to the Pharisees and Sadducees in today’s Gospel passage. They had the responsibility to lead the people toward right relationship with God and others, and instead had failed to produce the fruits of faithful living themselves. John did not prevent them from approaching him for the baptism of repentance, but asked them to turn their lives more faithfully to God and live accordingly. John understood himself as the forerunner of the One for whom the people had been waiting. The one upon whom the spirit of the Lord rests, the spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel and strength, knowledge and fear of the Lord. In Advent, we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of the Lord. Not that Jesus has not already come, or that the Lord is not already in our midst; rather, we take this season to appreciate in a new and fuller way that God’s coming as a child in Bethlehem and Christ’s promised return are about the establishment of the kingdom of God already in our midst and yet not known in its fullness until the Lord returns in glory. T THE LONG-AWAITED ONE As the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to his historical birth. Today’s scriptures blend the two. Isaiah’s disillusionment with the kings of his own day led him to envision an ideal king who would rule with divine approval and be led by divine wisdom. For centuries the Jewish people anticipated the arrival of that Messiah, who would usher in a blessed age when the whole world would finally dwell in justice and peace.

After centuries of such growing expectation, the preaching of John the Baptist about the imminent arrival of the Messiah could not help but provoke intense interest. The Baptist’s message about preparation for “the one who is coming” (Matthew 3:11) makes clear that Jesus is, in fact, the long-awaited one who is ushering in the new age foretold by Isaiah and all the prophets. R F The Retirement Fund for Religious is an annual collection to raise funds that are distributed to religious communities throughout the eight counties of the diocese and across the country. Many senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little or no pay. Today, religious communities often do not have enough savings to meet retirement needs. Your gift helps provide medication, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. It also helps ensure younger members can continue the good works of their elders. Please be generous. This years’ collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious will be on this weekend December 7 – 8, 2019.

P The purpose of Advent is not to shop but to learn to wait. Even if you are not a Christian, teaching your child to delay gratification is an important life skill. Perhaps this W.A.I.T. acronym could help:

W -Waiting can give us time to make a good decision or buy the right thing

A - Anticipation can enhance appreciation

I - Instant gratification is often fleeting.

T - Take stock of your blessings; what you already have. -www.Susan Vogt.net
