Back in the 1950s, our founder and namesake Alfred Schefenacker (AS)

was an inventor living in Southern Germany. During his daily walks outside

Stuttgart he noticed how difficult it was to mow between the steep and narrow rows of the local vineyards. Besides being steep, vineyards were

only mowed perhaps once per year and the prunings left thick vines along the way. There seemed to be no solution to this tough mowing job, so

Schefenacker decided to invent one.

Knowing the engine is the heart of every machine, Alfred built his own custom two-stroke engine to power the first Allmäher® (all-mower) up slopes. Light, powerful, and specifically engineered for rough-terrain, the AS-Motor

Allmäher® was a major innovation, significantly improving an otherwise onerous task.

AS-Motor would remain a major innovating force in the years to come, and today remains one of the most trusted manufacturers of professional-grade

mowers in Europe and around the world for municipalities, landscapers, grounds-

keeping and private users. Its history of engineering milestones translates to a culture of innovation that keeps AS-Motor on the cutting edge of the industry, culminating with this year’s US launch of the AS Sherpa RC – the world’s first

ride-on rough-terrain mower with remote control. AS-Motor still engineers all its machines in-house, from a 12-person strong Research & Design team all the way to testing, components manufacture and final assembly.

Driving around Southern Germany today, one can still see farmers using the

Allmäher® they bought 30 years ago. Some miles down the road at AS-Motor’s head-

When the zero-turn ride-on mower burst onto the scene people immedi-ately recognized it as a better way to mow their lawns. If one is maintain-

ing a large area with average contours, there’s no better tool. But putting a zero-turn mower on slopes or rugged terrain is to invite problems, or worse. They’re simply not designed for that job – it’s too dangerous.

The AS 940 Sherpa 4WD was engineered specifically for use in rough con-

ditions where other mowers are simply not practical. With 22 horse-power, permanent all-wheel drive, a locking differential, a low center of gravity and

large agricultural tires for ground clearance and difficult terrain, the Sherpa is incredibly sure-footed. Slopes, ditches, rough terrain – no problem.

The AS 940 Sherpa 4WD is the high-grass ride-on mower for professional use in rough-terrain and slopes, preferred by professional landscapers and large property

owners alike. The tubular frame ensures a robust yet agile design, leaving a light footprint on soft soil. Variable speed, compression braking and hydrostatic drive

The AS 901 is a completely different kind of mower. Instead of a tradi-tional single rotating blade, the 901 uses 26 free-swinging knives known

as flails that extend from one side of the cutting chamber to the other. As the drum rotates at high speed, these flails quickly reduce waist-high

grass, briars and dense undergrowth to small particles. High grass and thick shrub are no match for the AS 901 Flail Mower’s robust cutting technology.

The AS 901 delivers safety alongside power. Flails are designed not only to quickly digest mass quantities of overgrown vegetation, but also to dodge foreign objects. In areas where grass and weeds may be mowed only once

or twice per year, the free-swinging flails simply ride up and over any unseen obstacle, protecting the mower and the operator. This “cut and drop” action makes flail mowers much safer for use in parks, roadsides and anywhere the job
