There are many mountainous trekking routes which are constantly

drawing tourists, especially foreigners, for their adventurous

endeavours. Rafting on the river Siang is an unforgettable experience. In

the early days of geographical exploration the Siang River was referred

to as the „Missing link‟ the unexplored channel that formed the link  between the Tsangpo of Tibet and the Brahmaputra of Assam. It is a

mighty river turning into Indian Territory at a point near Gelling in

Upper Siang district near the indo-china border. In the Tibetan

cosmogony it is the horse mouth river with sands of emerald flowing

east , and there is a belief that those who drink its water will become as

sturdy as horses.

Since Arunachal Pradesh is endowed with thick evergreen forests

covering more than 80 percent of its total area and has five major rivers-

Kameng, Subansiri , Lohit , Siang and Tirap winding their way through

the sylvan hills, it is an ideal place for trekking ,angling ,boating and

rafting .The upper reaches offer an ideal landscape for adventure

tourism.

A Treasure Trove of Heritage

Parasuram Kund is a place of great sanctity attracting large numbers of

pilgrims from all over India for a dip in the Kund during Makar-

Sankranti Mela every year. Here, according to the legend recorded in

the Kalika Purana, Parasuram washed away his sins of killing his

mother, in the water of Brahma Kund.

Recently the discovery of the World War  – II Cemetery in the easterndistrict of Changlang has led to renewed interest in the famous Still

Well Road built by Allied forces linking Ledo in Assam to Kumming in

China and was the only road communication that existed during

preindependence days. 36 miles of this road lies within India running

from Ledo through Changlang district to Pangsau Pass on the Arunachal

 – Myanmar border . The discovery drew international media attentionand attracted historians and archaeologists. The departments of research

upper reaches remain covered with snow during the major part of theyear. The Noa-Dihing River meanders through the forest fed bynumerous tributaries and has a rich variety of aquatic life. The National

Park is also home to a large variety of butterflies and has more than 150timber species and some of the rare species of medicinal plants like

Mishmi Teeta.

Festivals

Arunachal Pradesh is home to at least 26 major and sub  –  tribes, eachwith its distinct tradition and customs. The majority of the population,

that consists of tribes like Adi, Galo, Aka, Apatani, Nyishi, Tagins,Bori, Bokar etc. still continue with their ancient beliefs and indigenous

practices of worshipping the sun and the moon . This religion is known

as Donyi- Polo (which literally means sun and Moon).

Monpas and Sherdukpens in West Kameng and Tawang Districts, whocame in contact with the Tibetans in the north, adopted Mahayana form

of the Buddhist faith, while the Khamptis in Lohit district and Singphos practice Hinayana Buddhism. Mishmis in Lohit, Upper and Lower Dibang Valley, Noctes and Wanchos in Tirap and Changlang districts

also still continue with their ancient beliefs and indigenous practices of worship, which is animistic in nature.

Being a distinctlytribal state, festival is an ssential integral part ofthesocial-cultural life ofthe people in Arunachal Pradesh. Most of these

festivals are connected with agriculture and celebrated with ritualistic

gaiety either to thank god for his providence or to pray for a bumper harvest. The festivities mirror the culture, the artistry and skills of the

 people in music and dance.

Come and take a look at this exotic way of life of the people. If you areinterested in studying different people and tribes and their culture,

Arunachal Pradesh is the right destination for you. Tawang, a tantalizing

hill resort of Arunachal Pradesh at a height of above 10,000 feet has a

fairy tale quality about it and is just the place for a dream holidaydestnation . Towering snow capped peaks feeding the horizon, long

invigorating walks and quaint mysticism and much more … Festivals form an essential aspect of the socio-cultural life of the people

of the state. As a matter of fact, festivals are the mirror of the people'sculture. Since agriculture is the mainstay of the population , naturally,

the festivals celebrated by the people are closely connected with their

occupation. Such festivals are celebrated at a larger sale for thanking theGods for their providence and for saying a prayer a prayer for a bumper crop. Throughout the year festivals are celebrated by some tribe or the

other. Some of the important festivals are Solung, Mopin, Losar, BooriBoot, Dree, Nechi Dau, Khan, Kshyat-Sowai, Loku, Longte Yullo, Mol,

Nyokum, Ojiale, Reh, Sanken, Si-Donyi and Tamladu.

Animal sacrifices are a common ritual in most of the festivals,

particularly in the non-Bodic tribes. The festivals have been firmly blended with the lifestyle of the people of Arunachal Pradesh. For some

communities like the Mijis these are occasions to bring all peopletogether who might otherwise be scattered in far flung villages. This

serves as a reminder of the richness of their cultural heritage.

The spring time festivals are celebrated during the period from January

to April by the different groups. In the celebration of these festivals, thereligious rites and the sacrifices are generally performed by their priests

assisted by some select male members. The Losar festival of the Monpas, which is their new year, is celebratedfor five days. On the eve of the festival people clean out their homes to

Page 15: Arunchal Pradesh 3

usher in the new year and to discard the old. The dirt and the grit of theold year is considered to symbolise ill health. During the five days of

the festivities prayers are offered for prosperity and good health; thefestivities include the hoisting of religious flags atop their homes; visits

to he homes of friends and relatives; oly uddhist sriptures are read in

ervery home and butter lamps are lit in houses and the campuses.Appeasement of the dieties who conrol the peace and prosperity of the

people is the thought behind the six day celebrations of the Reh festival,

essentially associated with the Idu Mishmis. The festival comes to anend with great fanfare and the priest dance performed during the six

days is its speial attraction.

The Wanhos celebrate their most popular estival, Ojiyale during March-

April, for a period of six to twelve days interspersed with prayer, songand dance. Villagers exchange bamboo tubes of rice beeras a mark of

greeting and good will. Pig's skin is offered to the village chief as amark of respect.

Another important festival is Tamladu, essentially celebrated by theDigaru Mishmis tribe. During the festival, prayers are offered to the

God of Earth and the God of Water for protection against natural

calamities. The supreme- Lord Jebmalu, is worshipped and welfare of human beings, the standing crops and domestic animals. Another is the Khan festival, an occasion for the reunion of the people.

Besides the usual festivities, the significance of the festival lies in theceremony whereby the priest ties a piece of wool around everybody's

neck. The belief is that the enchanted thread will bring good luck to

each of them.

Sangken festival, is an occasion to bathe the images of Lord Buddhaceremoniously. Thsi also heralds the new year and people sprinkle water

on each other as a sign of merriment. One of the groups celebrate Mopinfor wealth, prosperity, good health and universal happiness. Smearing of

rice powder on each others' faces marks the beginning of the festival

which is celebrated for five days. The Mol festival of the Tangsas is also

celebrated for three days to welcome the new year.

People in Arunachal Pradesh are unique and its natural beautyunparalleled. This land, encompassing extensive geographical diversity

and corresponding climate conditions varying from the tropical to thetemperate and Alpine with a variety of wildlife, flora and fauna has now

started gaining acclaim the world over as one of the richest biodiversity

and heritage spots. The variation in altitude and climatic conditionsaccount for four different types of forests whose natural shelter and food

harbour a range of flora and fauna, some of which are found only in

Arunachal Pradesh. It is the only state that can claim to have four major varieties of the big cats in its jungles- tiger, leopard, clouded leopard

and snow leopard. Then there are the lesser feline species like the

golden cat and marbled cat. More than 500 species of birds have been

recorded, many of which are highly endangered and restricted to thisstate, such as the white-winged duck, scatter, monal bangal florian etc.

Besides, there are seven species of primates that include the takin whichis found in Arunachal Pradesh only. A large mammal called “ Mithun”

is a majestic animal , which is indigenous to the state,. Each district of Arunachal Pradesh has its own exclusive and rare variety of orchids.

One of Asia‟s largest Orchidarium is in Arunachal Pradesh, located at

Tipi.In an effort to preserve the natural habitat, a number of Wild LifeSanctuaries and National Parks have been identified:- Sessa Orchid

Sanctuary, Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary, Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary,Kane Wildlife Sanctuary, Mouling National Park, Dr,D.Ering Memorial

Wildlife Sanctuary, Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary, Dihang-Debang

Biosphere Reserve and Namdapha Wildlife Sanctuary. So, if you love

nature in its pristine glory, Arunachal Pradesh is the destination you arelooking for.

Arunachal Pradesh is home to a very rich mammalian wildlife population as the wide variety of altitudinal and climatic conditions

have given rise to different forest types which create corresponding

natural shelter , food etc. to varieties of wildlife. It has two National

Parks and four Wildlife Sanctuaries. It is home to many rare and highlyendangered species of Wild life like Mishmi, Takin, Hoolock Gibbon,

Musk Deer, Bharal, Hisbid Hare, Flying Squirrel and more than 500species of birds.

Namdapha National Park amongst them has perhaps the widest diversityof habitat of any of South Asia's protected areas. It is unique, with it's

elevation varying between 200 to 4500 mts. and has all four large cats, the tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard in addition to

lesser feline species like the Golden cat and marbled cat Seven species

of primates i.e. Hoolock Gibbon, Slow loris, Assamese macaque,Rhesus macaque, Pigtailed macaque, Stumptaile macaque and Capped

langur are found here.

All the three goat antelopes found in India i.e. Serow, Goral and Takinare found here. Arunachal Pradesh is the only place in India where

Takin is found. Among the large mammals, Mittan, which is a cross

between the wild Gaur and domestic cattle, buffalo and elephant are all

found in the plains and adjoining hills. The other high altitude animalsinclude Himalayan Black bear, Red panda etc. The Musk deer is found

in some areas of the state while the bharal has been reported in thewestern part of the state. Among the smaller mammals a large number

of rodents(squirrels, porcupine and rats), civet, mongoose, linsang, shrew and bat species are found here.

More than five hundred bird species have been recorded in Arunachal

Pradesh, many of which are highly endangered and restricted to thisstate , e.g. White winged wood duck, sclater monal, temminck'stragopan, Bangal florican etc. This state has the highest number of

species of pheasants with some ten species at different altitudinal levels.Arunachal Pradesh is equally rich in reptiles, amphibia and pisces.

Pythons and snakes of all colours and descriptions are found in the

forests all almost all the levels upto the temperate zone.

The invertebrate faunal communities are found in the dense andevergreen forests of Arunachal Pradesh. Numerous species of

butterflies, moths, beetles and all other kinds of small creatures makeArunachal Pradesh a paradise for Entomologists and Naturalists.

Arunachal also has more than 500 rare species of Orchids.

People

Arunachal has 26 major tribes and many sub-tribes living in 3649scattered villages. Although a number of tribal groups constitue the total

population, the density of population is very less. People are Mangoloid

stock but each tribe has certain distinct characteristics in language, dress& costume. They have a rich cultural heritage. The People are simple,

friendly and hospitable. Their colourful festivals are manifestations of

their faith and belief.

The society is patriachal and primogeniture and the fundamental laws of inheritance with variations are not uncommon. They follow endogamy

and strictly observe the rule of clan exogamy. Polygamy is sociallysanctioned and is practiced by most of them. The people are highly

democratic, and each tribe has its own organised institutions thatmaintain law and order , decide disputes and take up all activities for the

welfare of the tribes and the villages. The members constituting these

organisations are selected by the people.

The entire population of the state can be divided into three culturalgroups on the basis of their socio-politico-religious affinities. It has

been found that the tribes of Arunachal are integrated into groups

independant of each other, living their separate lives. The commondenominators are that the pattern of lifestyle of each is the same and that

they follow the same occupation; the societies are casteless; thesocieties are governed by chiefs and the adults were grouped according

to their age for distinct social functions. The young are organised

around dormitory institutions to follow the instructions of the older generation.

The WANCHOS inhabit the south-western part of the Tirap district

bordering Nagaland. They are fond of wearing decorated headgears andheavy strings of beads on the neck, arms, legs and ears.

The NOCTES inhabit the central part of the Tirap district, to the north

of the Wanchos. These people have a long and traditional contact with

the people of the neighbouring plains. Many of them are Vaishnavites.TANGSAS is a common name of a group of people consisting of the

Lungchang, Moklong, Yugli, Lungri, Have, Moshong, Rundra, Takhak,Ponthi and Longphi. Each group is subdivided into a number of

exogamous clans. These tribes occupy the Changlang district along theIndo-Myanmar front.

The SINGPHOS live on the banks of Teang and Noa Diking rivers and

extend towards the southeast into the land of the Khamptis. They are afine athletic race with developed Mongolian features. They are expert blacksmiths and prepare iron implements of quality. The ladies are good

weavers. They are Buddhists. The KHAMPTIS live to the south of the Lohit district along the

Kamlang, Dehing and Tengapani rivers with the Parasuramkund to the

northeast and Tirap district of the south. The Khamptis are good

craftsmen, enterprising traders and skilful agriculturists. They areBuddhists.

There are three main groups of the Mishmis, viz. Idu, Miju or Kamanand Digaru or Taraon. The Idus, also called Chulikata, by the plains

people live in Dibang valley district. With roughly 25,000 members, the

Idu tribe is divided into sections, each named after the river by the side

of which they live.It is by the manner of hair doing that the Idus (Chulikatas) are

distinguished from other tribes. The front hair is combed down on the brow and then cut straight across from ear to ear. The back hair iscollected in a knot.

The Mijis (Kamans) live in the Lohit district, east of the Taraons. Their number is approximately 18,000. The Kamans unlike the Idus, keep

their hair long. Their dress is as colourful as it is durable. The Kaman, specially the women, have an admirable sense of colour and pattern.

Agriculture is one of the main occupations of these people. The Digarus

call themselves as Taraon. They are good agriculturists. The tribes of the East, West and Upper Siang districts are mainly those

classified under the general title of "adis". They may be divided into

three main groups: GALOS, PADAMS, and MIWONGS, each of whichcan again be subdivided into a number of sub-groups.

They are exogamous. Dances are very popular among the Adis. Ponung

is their traditional dance, which is also religious in character.

The Galos weave clothes of highly artistic designs and the finest profitis a beautiful skirt with a central pattern of black yarn netted in regular

designs of black and white. The most striking features of the Padam and Minyong society are their

highly organized political institution represented by the Kebang or village council and the dormitory. They are forward looking, active and

expert weavers.

Along the international frontier in the Tuting area live the KHAMBAS.They are Buddhists and lovers of dance. The Membas are found along the northern border of Upper Siang

district. They are by religion Buddhist. To the north along the banks of the Sipi river extends the country of the

TAGINS. They are also sometimes known as Moyas because of their

preference for the shady mountain for their villages. Agriculture is their

main occupation. The Hill Miris inhabiting the lower Kamla valley look attractive in their

costume. They tie the hair in a knot just above the forehead. Their women wear attractive "crinoline of cane rings" which serves the

purpose of a blouse but now it is not seen in the urban areas.

The Apatamis are settled in a valley in the Centre of the lower

Subansiri district around the district headquarters. They live in crowdedvillages , are expert in wet cultivation and grow paddy and millet in

abundance. They have a stable agricultural economy.

The Nyishis are divided into several exogamous clans. The Nyishi menkeep their hair long and tie it in a knot just above the forehead and they

wear cane bands around the waist traditional dress. The Hrussos are commonly called Akas which means 'painted' for they

have a custom of painting their faces with black marks. They figured

frequently in old historical records. They are good traders. The Khowas (Bugun) occupy 7 villages in Teilga and Bichum valley in

the neighbourhood of the Sherdukpens.Buddhism influences the

Buguns. The Puroiks (SULUNGS), live mainly in the high altitudes of Kameng

districts. They dress like the Nyishis. The Mijis call themselves Dhamai.

In appearance and way of life there is little to distinguish them from the

Akas(Hrussos). The Sherdukpens live mainly in the two villages of Rupa and Shergaon in West Kameng district. They are divided into two

classes, the Thongs and the Gheos. The Sherdukpens are goodagriculturalists and traders. Their religion is an interesting blend of

Buddhism and religious beliefs. There are the gentle and culturedMonpas of West Kameng Districts who received Buddhism from Padma

Sambhava .

Art and CraftArunachal Pradesh is a land of beautiful handicrafts comprising a widevariety. Artistic craftmanship has been passed on from one generation to

the other and sense of aesthetics has been manifested through a varietyof crafts such as weaving, painting, pottery, smithy work, basket making

etc.

From the viewpoint of the art and culture the state may be very

conveniently divided into three zones. The first of these zones includesthe Buddhist tribe; the second occupies the central part (from east

Kameng in the west to Lohit in the east); and the third zone is theeastern part of the territory.

The people of the first zone make beautiful masks. They periodically

stage pantomimes and masked dances. They also make exquisite painted

wooden vessels and silver articles. Carpet making is a speciality of theMonpas, the Buddhist community. Carpets with exotic designs of

dragons, geometric and floral patterns are made here. Carpet weavinghas today become a major occupation of the womenfolk and with an

increase in demand, production of the carpets is now being undertakenon a large scale.

Those of the second zone are expert workers in cane and bamboo. Thecane and bamboo industry of the state has made a name for itself. As a

matter of fact most of the domestic requirements are made of these

materials. hats, baskets, canes vessels, cane belts - woven and plain, bamboo mugs and carvings, a wide variety of ornaments and jewellery

items are all crafted by workmen. The shawls and jackets, shoulder bags

and coats all stand for the perfection that the people have attained in thisart.

The people of the third zone are famous for their wooden carvings. The

Monpa wood carver scoopes out beautiful cups, dishes and fruit bowls

and magnificent ceremonial masks for dances and pantomimes. Another tribe that is framed for this art is the Khamptis who carve out beautiful

religion images, figures of dancers, toys and other objects. They weave beautiful bags and loin cloths too. Goat's hair, ivory, boar's tus, beads of

agate and the stones as well as of brass and glass are specialities of the people of this zone.

Weaving is the occupation of the womenfolk throughout the territory.

They have an excellent sense of colour. The basic colours thatdominates the weaves are black, yellow dark blue, green and scarlet - all put together in the most fascinating combinations. Originally natural

dyes were used which today have given away to synthetic dyes. The designs are essentially geometric varying from a formal

arrangement to lines and bands. Items that could make excellent buys

are Sherdukpen shawls, Apatani jackets and scarve, Adi skirts, jackets

and bags, Mishmi shawls, blouses and jackets; and Wancho bags.Crafting ornaments is another art widely practised by the Arunachalis.

Besides multicoloured beads, feathers of birds and wings of the green beetles are also used as embellishments. The Akas make bamboo

bangles and earings which are occassionally decorated with pokerwork

designs. Paper making, smithy work, carpentry, pottery and ivory work

aare the other crafts practised by the Arunachalis. The Monpas make paper locally, from pulp of trees called Sukso or the other paper tress.

This hand made paper is used for writing religious prayers on them.Hunting, fishing also form the subsidiary occupations. With a view tohelp developing arts and crafts and to substantiate the livelihood of the

people, local boys and girls are imparted training in specially set upcrafts centres. The rich heritage of art and crafts of Arunachal Pradesh is

sure to add colour to the cultural heritage of the country.

Orchids

In Arunachal Pradesh orchids occur naturally in diverse habitats. In the

rich tropical forests of the Tirap district, clusters of the beautiful bluevanda (Vanda Coerulea) adorn the trees. Their large blue - violet

blooms are delicately veined. The bamboo orchid, Arundina

Graminifolia, a pretty evergreen species attractive pink - purple flowersis common in open sunny areas near Tipi where an Orchid Research

Centre boasts of a good collection of orchids.

Species like Dendrobium Gibsonii with its clusters of beautifully

formed yellow flowers having centres of rich maroon and Dendrobium Nobile with white and purple flowers can be seen on the trees in the

forests along the road from Tipi to Sessa. Sessa, 24 km from Tipi, hasan Orchid Sanctuary which abounds in a variety of species including the

beautiful white Coelogyne Nitida (which grows on moss covered rocks),the tree borne yellow, Cymbidium Elegans and Dendrobium

Chrysanthum (bright yellow flowers with two dark reddish brown

blotches in the centre) which present a magnificent sight when in bloom.
