Company : Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI)

Project : Embedded Controller Based SOC Monitor for Lead Acid Batteries

    Team Size : 4

    Duration Involved : Jan 2008 To Mar2008

Tools Used : Embedded controller 14X877

    Role : Programmer

    Responsibilities:

Understanding the application and Identification of Functionalities considered for automation

Preparation of Power supply circuit design

Analysis of compatibility of embedded IC

Preparation of algorithm and flow chart for embedded program

Embedded Program execution and documenting the results Preparation/review of project design and description document

    Project Description:

Our project entitles EMBEDDED CONTROLLER BASED SOC MONITOR FORLEAD batteries is mainly focused on finding the SOC (state of charge) of lead acid batteries

by using internal resistance method. The SOC reference is normally the rated capacity of a

cell that is a new cell. It is not the fully charged capacity of the cell when it was last charged

(i.e. the current charge-discharge cycle). This is because the cell capacity gradually reduces as

the cell ages and it is also affected by temperature and discharge rate.

Different methods are available to determining the state of charge, but these methods does not

show the accurate value while estimating the SOC, due to long stabilization period. Hence we

go for internal resistance method. This method gives the accurate value at a given time. This

project also shows the SOH (state of health) of the battery. The state of health reflects the

general state of the battery and its ability to store charge, compared with a new battery. SOH

calculations are, by their very nature, extremely complex and dependent on the understanding

of a battery's chemistry and environment. By using our project we eliminate a battery's SOH

is influenced by numerous factors, including charge acceptance, internal resistance, voltage,

    self-discharge and temperature.

There are numerous applications for the use of lead-acid storage batteries. They range from

the extremely large battery systems used in load leveling by electrical utility companies to the

relatively small batteries used in hand tools.

    Mini projects:

    Mobile Phone sniffer Circuit

The mobile phone sniffer circuit is not only detect the presence of mobile phone activity

(voice or text), it can home in on the culprit

In some situations and locations, the use of a mobile phone is forbidden. You may be

discussing sensitive information in a closed meeting or holding important exams. How

can you be sure that a concealed phone is not being used to pass information outside?

Maybe youre just curious and would like to know if someone nearby is using a phone

    Invisible Broken wire Detector

Portable loads such as video cameras, halogen floodlights, electrical irons, hand drillers,

grinders, and cutters are powered by connecting long 2- or 3-core cables to the mains

plug. Due to prolonged usage, the power cord wires are subjected to mechanical strain

and stress, which can lead to internal snapping of wires at any point. In such a case most

people go for replacing the core/cable, as finding the exact location of a broken wire is

difficult. In 3-core cables, it appears almost impossible to detect a broken wire and the

point of break without physically disturbing all the three wires that are concealed in a

    PVC jacket.

The invisible broken wire detector circuit can easily and quickly detects a broken/faulty

wire and its breakage point in 1-core, 2-core, and 3-core cables without physically

disturbing wires. It is built using hex inverter CMOS CD4069. Gates are used as a pulse

generator that oscillates at around 1000 Hz in audio range.
