MAINfm is a viable marketing tool for local businesses, with established audiences who listen frequently
promotionMAINfm regularly produces excellent 30 second promos that are played a number of times during the week
depending on the deal taken out by the sponsor. Copy is written in collaboration with the sponsor and recorded by
various people - often those whose business we are promoting, or people suggested by the sponsors. Then the real
magic happens when Elizabeth Scanlon, or other talented producers, mix music and sound underneath the words
to make the promo come to life on air.

PROGRaMmINg REPORT Programming at MAINfm is always a dynamic and exciting adventure as new programs are pitched and
new presenters come onboard. Sadly, not all shows can continue as presenters find they may no longer
have the time to spend creating a new program - which is a big effort and takes dedication and time, so
shows do come and go. We work a kind of endless rubics cube - trying to match times that presenters
are available with on air vacancies. The listener is paramount in our considerations, so we try as much
as possible, to have programs that flow into each other and are likely to attract or hold a similar
listenership. We also try to make similar shows happen at the same timeslot throughout the day so, for
example, we concentrate most of our talk shows in the morning slot, opening out to music programs in
the afternoons and evenings. We also play occasional repeats of programs that are very popular and
deserve a second airing. If however, a new program is pitched for the repeat timeslot that will always
take preference. We aim to have a full grid of original programs. At this stage, there are still some slots
available, so we encourage new program proposals. Suzanne Donisthorpe
TRaININgON-AIr ROLes In the last 18 months about 25 presenters have been trained by Steve Charman with help from Zeb Olsen,
Steve Norwood and Pete Dawson. The length of training varies and depends on how quickly trainee
presenters pick up the technical skills required. Additional training is also available on request to cover
specialist skills - how to operate the studios record turntables; how to operate the studios hybrid phone
system and put a call to air; and advanced editing using Audacity. Increasingly presenters are also being
taught how to load their recorded shows into the Play out Software (RadioZara) Events Screen. Previously
this had been managed by office and tech volunteers.
Another exciting initiative is our intention to offer a chance to undertake a full Certificate III course in
Media (Radio Broadcasting) here in Castlemaine at MAINfm. This will probably take place early next year.
Watch This Space! Steve Charman

Off-AIr ROLesIn the last few months we’ve spent more time in trying to expand the pool of technical helpers. It has
been recognized that just as presenters become better presenters through experience and training, so
volunteer technicians need to learn by attempting the repair of technical faults even if this means that
through their lack of success they gain a clearer idea of the limits of their knowledge. Steve Charman

In the past 18 monthsMAINfm has seen a lot ofpositive growth. Thanks to
many sausage sizzles, trivianights, grant applications, the
MAIN kick off and assorted drinks anddance events; we have moved from a month bymonth existence to year on year planning.
Thanks to our first ever Radiothon we have increased
subscribers/members to over 450 people, we have
been voted Best Little Station in the Nation (under
$100.000), we secured a Station Manager 3 days a
week (for 12 months), we have upgraded equipment,
created a pre-production - Studio 3, developed
streaming and on demand platforms to increase
our reach, and in line with our Permanent Broadcast
License we have developed several policies
guides (see website and office for hard copies) for
future growth.
Over the next 12 months we expect to receive less
grant money, so to become financially self-sustaining
we will need to double our own fundraising efforts.
This means we will focus on increasing our
subscribers and sponsors and various income
streams i.e. merchandise, outside broadcasts and,
both partnered and solo events (i.e. the MAIN Kick
OFF and June Radiothon). We are also looking to get
more people involved and we will create processes
to accommodate a growing base of volunteers
(specifically but not exclusively) to get involved
with Listening, Programming, Feedback and
Technical matters.
Thanks to the Committee, past and present for a lot
of hard work; (past members include: Ex-President,
Ed Griffin, Sharon Soldatos, Melissa Pollock, Geoff
Putnam and the amazing Allison Hanley who did a
lot of work above and beyond); Thanks to our
community minded and supportive Sponsors; thanks
to our subscriber discounters who offer even more
reason to come on board; thanks to our partner
community groups, and; Thanks to our presenters,
members and subscribers for being part of the best
little station in the nation.
Brett Houghton
The financial reporting year for MAINfm was changedfrom calendar to financial year at the Special GeneralMeeting held on April 15 2018. On the advice from theauditor the period has been treated in two periods: Jan2017 to June 2017 and July 2017 to June 2018. Thishas afforded the opportunity to lay down abase year from which future financialperformance comparisons can be made, that is comparing like reporting periodwith like.
It should be noted that the detailed financial
report contained in this annual report is for the
period July 2017 to June 2018. The auditor
advised that it was unnecessary to audit the preceding
six-month period as the completed detailed audit includes
checking that all bank accounts are reconciled, that all
accounts were reconciled and match the bank statement
balances at 30/06/2018 which means that the 6-month
period has also been reconciled and that no irregularities
were found.
Over the reporting period the organisation has emerged
from a difficult financial period. As a result of the efforts of
the committee of management during that time, supported
by many members and volunteers, the organisation has
managed to survive a particularly tight financial situation to
establish a stronger and more viable financial base position.
Over the reporting period, compared to the preceding 12-months, there has been:An increase in fundraising from events such as trivia nights,Main Kick-Off and footy tippingA decrease in grant money in comparison to the previous
financial yearGrant money has enabled upgrades on studiofacilities and appointment of station managerSome operating costs have declined (telephone, payroll) and others have increased (internet)Overall there has been a decrease in total Incomeand a decrease in total Expenses
The appointment of the station manager Tina Helm
has greatly contributed to the emerging financial
turnaround of the station. The fundraising initiatives,
successful grant applications and growing membership
have all substantially contributed to the strengthening
financial position of the station.
The organisation is now in a more financially sustainable
and viable position, and with the forward plans to further
develop fundraising initiatives, growing community
/membership support and grant applications the station is
financially well positioned for the future.
Richard McLelland
treasurer’s report
The threat of having torelocate our studios
has receded in recentdays with the news that it
appears we will be able toremain in the Old Castlemaine Hospitalbuilding for another two years. However, this is a temporary reprieve. We need tokeep our eyes open and look for a futurehome for MAINfm.
Overall much of MAINfm’s studio equipment
is old and the Committee of Management
is discussing the necessary upgrade,
including how to fund and stage it so there are
no disruptions.
We've begun to tackle some of the more
irritating technical issues that have plagued us
for some time. We've begun upgrading (and
cleaning) the studio PCs which have caused
so many problems in the last few months.
When funding becomes available we will
replace the oldest PCs first.
The building of the new Training and
Production studio (Studio 3) has made life
easier for training purposes and presenters
prerecording their programs. It may be no
more than a glorified broom cupboard but it's
getting a lot of use!
Steve Charman
This report covers the period January 2017 to June 2018this is because at the last AGM the station changed itsreporting period from a calendar year to a financial year.
Since the last Annual Report the Committee has been
involved in two significant processes which are
aimed at securing the long term future of the
station. The first has been the granting of a
permanent broadcasting license from the
Australian Communications and Media
Authority. Until February of this year the
station had operated on an annual temporary
license which could be withdrawn at any time.
Each year we would re-apply for another twelve
month license in the hope it would be granted. We now
have a permanent license which only comes up for renewal
every five years. In order to comply with the requirements
for a permanent license it was necessary for us to change
the constitution which we did in April this year and to
develop a range of new policies. Tracey Naughton has
taken the lead in this work. Tracey has had a lifetime of
experience in community broadcasting and she has willingly
shared her knowledge and experience for which the
committee is very grateful. Whilst the process of policy
development is on-going, we now have a suite of policies
which covers most of the key areas of the station’s
operations including: Complaints, Programming,
Sponsorship, OH&S, Community Participation, Talk Back
and Volunteer Rights and Responsibilities. Once approved
by the Committee policies are posted on the Station’s
website to enable ease of access.
The second initiative still in progress is an
application to the Federal Government to be
included on the Register of Cultural
Organizations, this process when finally
completed will allow donations to the station to
be claimed as a Tax Deduction. We do not
currently receive many donations, but the
committee believes the lack of tax deductibility is a
significant disincentive to potential donors. The other
benefit of having Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status is
that it opens up the potential to seek funds from the
philanthropic sector which to date the station has not been
able to access.
Whilst the above work may seem somewhat removed from
our on air activities they will help ensure the long term future
of the station and they are part of what is expected of
contemporary community organisations.
