Fredericton Arts Alliance AGM & Expansion & New Directions of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Feb 10 The Fredericton Arts Alliance is very pleased to present a free public talk at their AGM by Director and CEO of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Terry Graff, on the current expansion and new directions of this world-renowned gallery on February 10 at 7pm in the Charlotte Street Art Centre Auditorium. With an exciting expansion project underway, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery is charting a bold new future that will significantly enhance its public programs, collections and identity as a cornerstone in the cultural life of New Brunswick and as a landmark destination for visitors to the province. Converging architectural goals with social and cultural goals, the new and improved Beaverbrook Art Gallery will raise the bar by providing a stimulating constellation of experiences that will contribute to New Brunswick’s quality of life, to the promotion of creative thinking and artistic excellence, and to important cultural and economic opportunities in the province. It will not only mean many new partnerships with New Brunswick’s vibrant arts community, but with schools, universities, community groups, and local businesses, and will allow more people to participate in the Gallery’s many programs and activities. The talk will be followed by the FAA Annual General Meeting. Refreshments, including beer and pizza, will be provided. The FAA welcomes everyone interested in the arts in Fredericton to join us. The evening provides a wonderful opportunity for artists working in all disciplines as well as arts supporters to get together for a relaxed evening of sharing. Back to top.

8. NB Film Co-op's Monday Night Film Series presents Room (Feb 8) & Brand New Testament (Feb 15) Room February 8, 2016, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Director: Lenny Abrahamson Ireland, Canada, 2015 English 118 minutes Cast: Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen After five-year-old Jack and his mother escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery: the outside world. Room tells the extraordinary story of Jack, a spirited 5-year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted mother. Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical--they are trapped--confined to a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space that Ma has euphemistically named Room. Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack's curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma's resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards. Brand New Testament February 15, 2016, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Director: Jaco Van Dormael Belgium, France Luxembourg, 2015 French, German with English subtitles 113 minutes Principal Cast: Pili Groyne, Benoît Poelvoorde, Catherine Deneuve Jaco Van Dormael's silly, sweet-natured and stylish alternate theology comedy, The Brand New Testament, is an irresistibly laugh-out-loud and feel-good story. In this fantasy film, God is a wrathful being living in a cramped, tatty apartment in Brussels who gets his kicks watching his creatures suffer and making up thousands of Laws of Annoyance (example: whatever line a person stands in, the other one moves faster.) Each law is quickly illustrated onscreen and each is a hoot. He lives with his long-suffering wife, his son JC who has retired to become a statue, and his 10 year old daughter named Ea. And while we might have heard of his son, who in this reading seems to have defied His will by walking among the people and getting himself killed for his troubles, we probably know less about Ea, his daughter. Ea is observant, gaining in powers and wants to set the world, which her mean-spirited father regards as his own personal playset, to rights.. “Don’t get crazy ideas like your brother,” Dad grunts, but later that evening she has a conversation with “JC” and the pair devise a plan. Ea is going to get six additional disciples, and listen to them, thus creating a Brand New Testament. This term, 14 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $7/film, but a film society membership reduces admission cost to $4/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night. For further info, contact NB Film Co-op at 455-1632 or [email protected]. For more information visit: http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/exhibition/monday-night-film-series. 11. Theatre St. Thomas and Solo Chicken Productions presents The Bacchae Feb 10-13 Theatre St. Thomas, featuring Solo Chicken Productions’ the coop, presents: The Bacchae by Euripides from February 10 – 13, 2016 at 7:30pm (plus a 2pm Saturday matinée) in the Black Box Theatre, Sir James Dunn Hall, located at 67 Dineen Drive, at St. Thomas University. The iconic Greek God Dionysus takes the stage at the Black Box Theatre and demands that we witness what happens when hedonism and repression engage in a fierce battle. The Bacchae, a classic Greek tragedy that is more than relevant for our present day struggles, compels us to think about the consequences of subscribing to a narrow world view, be it sex, drugs, and rock and roll, or a puritanical ethos. Theatre St. Thomas teams up with Solo Chicken Productions’ physical theatre company, the coop, to retell this classic tale using the physical body and voice as the foundation, with a liberal sprinkling of corsets and heels. Don’t miss this vibrant, compelling, and at times horrifying journey directed by Lisa Anne Ross and assistant director Alexa Higgins. Tickets are $5 students/seniors, $10 general and will be sold at the door. For more information visit the TST website: http://wp.stu.ca/tst/, TST Facebook: www.facebook.com/TheatreStThomas or contact Robin C. Whittaker, TST Artistic Producer, at [email protected].
