The Fredericton High School Music Department presents their Spring Gala Concerts May 25 & 26 The Fredericton High School Music Department will be presenting their Spring Gala Concerts on May 25 and May 26 in the Tom Morrison Theatre at 7:30pm. The May 25 concert will feature the FHS String Ensemble, FHS Glee Choir and FHS Jazz Band. The May 26 concert will feature the FHS Concert Band and Mt. Allison University Music Faculty Members. Admission to the concerts is $5 per person or $12 per family. The $5 and $12 covers the admission to both concerts.Be prepared to be amazed at these wonderful and talented performing groups. 2. The Third Age Centre presents a Screening of Copperhead May 26 The Third Age Centre is offering a wonderful opportunity to view Copperhead, a movie filmed at Kings Landing. Join us for this special showing on Thursday, May 26. The doors open at 11am with the movie starting at 11:30am. Kings Landing Historical Settlement provides an authentic and beautiful backdrop for this film set in Northern New England during the years of the American Civil War. Bring along friends and enjoy a special movie outing at the Cineplex theatres at the Regent Street Mall. Tickets are $20 and include a small snack and beverage from the concession stand to enjoy during the show and refreshments and conversation after the movie. Local people who were involved in the filming of this event are being invited, too! Cineplex’s National Theatre Live presents The Shakespeare Show May 26 The BBC and the Royal Shakespeare Company celebrate 400 years of William Shakespeare and his extraordinary legacy in this hugely ambitious event recorded live at Stratford-upon-Avon. The celebration is hosted by RSC actor and former Doctor Who stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate and features stage and screen luminaries Helen Mirren, Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Joseph Fiennes, John Lithgow, David Suchet as well as singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, The English National Opera, The Royal Ballet, and much, much more! 5. Ancestral Roots & A Walk in the Garden at Gallery 78 May 27 David McKay is interested in heritage and memory, both personal and shared. Many of his paintings are images from his memory that evoke emotion. In his new exhibition, Ancestral Roots, David shares imagery from his remembered personal history living in New Brunswick and from his visit to the lands of his ancestors, Scotland and Ireland. The common thread of the paintings is rooted in his personal lineage and creates a thoughtful and thought provoking exhibition. Joanne Hunt’s paintings are clear and vivid, bright yet soft, evoking a warm summer day and A Walk in the Garden. The luscious peonies, the stunning rhododendron, the delicate hydrangea, each depicted in meticulous detail, bring us to our calm centre and quietly insist that we pay attention. Magnified, these white blossoms take on all the hues, tones, and shades of colour. Blue, pink, purple, yellow, green and gold all contribute to the overall effect of paintings that marvel and awe. Future, Past: Songs of Life, Travel and Love featuring Natasha Fransblow May 28 Formerly from Fredericton, classical pianist Natasha Fransblow is returning to the city to present a homecoming recital with Montreal tenor Jan van der Hooft. It is part of a quad-city tour called Future, Past: Songs of Life, Travel and Love. The recital will take place at the Tom Morrison Theatre, located at 300 Priestman Street in Fredericton High School, on Saturday May 28 at 7pm. 10. Benefit Concert with Vivian Ni & Special Guests at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre May 29

Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 29 at 3pm! Join us at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre while we host our benefit concert featuring Vivian Ni and friends. Enjoy a wonderful arrangement of instruments, such as violin, piano, vocals and a string quartet. All proceeds from the concert will go towards funding the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Accessibility Expansion Project. In 2015 the Charlotte Street Arts Centre celebrated its 10-Year anniversary as Fredericton’s only community arts centre. Since opening its doors, the Centre has hosted thousands of events for literally hundreds of thousands of participants. Located in a 130-year old heritage school building, the Charlotte Street Arts Centre was transformed by a group of dedicated volunteers committed to opening a space in downtown Fredericton where the community could actively engage in artistic endeavours to fulfill personal and community interests. While the Charlotte Street Arts Centre has the benefit of operating in a beautiful, historically rich space, there are distinct challenges associated with maintaining and working in an older building. For the organization to extend its reach into the community, it is necessary for the Charlotte Street Arts Centre to renovate the building to make it more accessible and user-friendly. To be more accessible, both physically and operationally, the organization plans to install an elevator in the building and modify some of the internal spaces to make common areas reachable by all users. The expansion sees an addition on the side of the building, housing a physically accessible entryway, box office, lobby and elevator that will lead to the basement and upper floor, making the building fully reachable for all users. Within the building, modifications have been made to allow for a backstage in the 150-seat auditorium, a greenroom, a wheelchair accessible washroom and an accessible multipurpose room that also houses a kitchen for catering. Through this expansion, four additional rooms have been carved out that will be rented to artists and/or arts organizations seeking permanent space. The Charlotte Street Arts Centre has virtually changed the way that arts experiences and programming are delivered in Fredericton. Sustained through revenues generated primarily through rental of it spaces and programming delivered with various partners, the Charlotte Street Arts Centre has proven itself essential in the Fredericton community. Its success yields further interest in usage for various arts activities that require the building to be fully accessible and usable to the public.

Vivian was awarded first place in violin and piano at the 2015 American Protégé International Concerto Competition Intermediate Category with the gala concert that was hosted at Carnegie Hall. That same year, she placed second with honourable mention at the 4

th Tureck International Bach Competition for Young Pianists and second place in violin and

Edition of ENKOR International Piano and Violin Competition. She was the third place winner in violin at the 57th

Kocian International Violin Competition. Vivian has been accepted into the National Youth Orchestra of Canada this year and, in the summer, will be trained at the Music Niagara’s Performance Academy Program. Special Guests include: Maggie Kerr, Amanda Zhang, Emma He, Talia Kennedy, Rose He, Alicia Ingalls, Jerry Yin, Chelsea Ahn, Sienna Cho, Nadia Ingalls, and Tony Nicholson. 11. Lintuhtine Music Academy Welcomes Spring May 29 This will be a delightful program to wind up the winter season. This concert features all choirs with the ukulele group, and lots of wonderful music that you can sit back and enjoy or even sing along with. This will take place on Sunday, May 29 at 7pm at the Oromocto United Church, located on Winnebago Street in Oromocto. Monetary donations at the door will go to Lintuhtine's music programs' expenses. 13. Music Runs Through It proudly presents The Young Novelists at Corked Wine Bar Jun 1 On Wednesday, June 1 at 8pm Corked Wine Bar presents The Young Novelists. Tickets are $15, and are available at Corked Wine Bar and Tony's Music Box Johnny & June meets Simon & Garfunkel – this Toronto based roots band had a busy 2015! Appearing in Fredericton as duo, this husband and wife, Graydon James and Laura Spink, are known for their beautiful harmonies and songs culled from their small-town roots. Riding the buzz created by the release of their second full-length album, made us strangers in April 2015, they had a summer of Canadian and US festival appearances, including winning the 2015 Grassy Hill Songwriting Competition at the Connecticut Folk Festival. Graydon was the 2015 recipient of the Ontario Art Council’s Colleen Peterson Songwriting award, and the band recently returned from Edmonton where they won the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year. 14. Atugwatiq: Akonutomane: SharingStories opens at the Fredericton Public Library Jun 2

Atugwatiq: Akonutomane: Sharing Stories is a group exhibition that aims to share and celebrate visual art and fine craft by Aboriginal artists from the Atlantic Region, presented by the Aboriginal Crafts & Culture Collective. This exhibition is curated by Aidan Stanley. The Aboriginal Crafts and Culture Collective consists of the New Brunswick Crafts Council, Joint Economic Development Initiative, the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, Valerie Jean, and The Water Spirit Wolastoq Artist Samaqani Cocahq-Natalie Sappier. This exhibition opens at the Fredericton Public Library on June 2 at 7pm. At the opening at June will also be declared Aboriginal Crafts Culture Month in Fredericton!

Under the direction of Helen McKinnon­Bagnall and accompanied by Lynn Mills, the choirs will present hits and popular numbers from the forties through today’s music. 3. One Day Rug Hooking Course for Beginners or Advanced Beginners May 28 A 6 hour Beginner/Advanced Beginner Rug Hooking Course is being held on Saturday, May 28 from 9am to 3:30pm. The course fee of $50 will include the instruction and the kit for a Watering Can and Flower pattern printed on burlap as well as the supplies to hook the pattern. Participants will need to bring a 10” to 14”hoop or other rug hooking frame, a rug hook and a pair of small, sharp scissors. For those who do not have a hook, one may be purchased for $10. For those with some rug hooking experience, there will be an opportunity to learn some basic shading techniques, use a wool cutter and try out other more advanced techniques. This course was originally scheduled for April 16, but was postponed. Due to limited enrolment a $20 deposit is required to hold your place in class. 4. UNB’s Andrews Initiative presents Tell Your Story: A Creative Memoir-Writing Course for Ages 50+ The course will run on Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm, for four weeks beginning on June 1. All classes (except June 15) will be held in Marshall D’Avray Hall, room 123. In the course, participants will work with instructors to begin producing a creative memoir. Each session in the course will offer participants an opportunity to explore a different creative approach to memoir writing.

June 1: Jane Stewart will work with the class to begin thinking creatively about the stories they have to tell. Jane is a seasoned teller-of-tales having worked and travelled abroad enhancing her abilities to process the living-learning experience through the ‘eyes and ears’ of children, youth and our ageing population, in both community and institutional environments

June 8: Kathie Goggin, retired therapist, writer and artist, will facilitate a memoir-writing workshop with the class. Kathie has several years’ experience teaching memoir writing. She is a dynamic group facilitator and instructor who generates excitement for storytelling and writing.

June 15: The class will take a field trip to Rabittown Press, David Brewer’s typesetting studio. David Brewer studied physical education/education at UNB and, after four years of doing this, that, and the other thing, went on to study at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax

June 22: Students will work with Denise Rowe to bring together the pieces they have been working on thus far in a bookbinding workshop. Denise Rowe is a graduate from the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design, where she received her Certificate in Specialty Photography.

By the end of the course, participants will have created a beautiful book they can continue to fill with reflections and creations, while completing a memoir. This course is for those aged 50+. 5. Free Physical Theatre Open Class with 'the coop' Jun 2 Solo Chicken is opening up the hen house and inviting anyone interested in physical theatre to an open class! Work with 'the coop' to use body and voice to create movement scores, participate in contact improv and explore nonlinear storytelling. Physical theatre is a blend of traditional theatre and dance, but previous experience is not required to participate in this class! Whether you have never experienced physical theatre or are just looking to hone your skills, join us movers/shakers at STU's Black Box Theatre June 2 at 7:30pm for a fun, welcoming workshop! 6. UNB Summer Music Camps 2016 The annual UNB Summer Music Camps are dedicated to furthering the experience and growth of New Brunswick music students. Students come from all over the province and beyond its borders to participate in an enjoyable and stimulating program of music and recreation. Originally designed for string, wind, and choral students, it has since expanded to include half-day and full-day camps for the very young and a program for youth strings. The faculty, top performing musicians and music educators, are assisted by staff members who help provide guidance and leadership to assure a high quality program.

NB Summer Music Festival seeks Festival Assistant The Music Festival Assistant will help with the planning and implementation of the 2-week NB Summer Music Festival. This position is being advertised under the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) initiative. To be eligible for this position, you must be between 15 and 30 years of age on the start date of the job. You also must have been a full-time student during the previous academic year and be intending to return to full-time studies in the next academic year. You also must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. You must also be legally entitled to work according to relevant provincial legislation and regulations. Duties and responsibilities:

Manage social media accounts, websites, and all online promotion;

Assist with the development and implementation of communications, marketing & promotions plan for all events & festival’s volunteer coordination;

Venue coordination: including planning, setup and cleanup;

Record keeping for all events: including ticket sales, surveys, and audience numbers;

Archiving all marketing and promotional materials and activities;

Research and production of concert programs;

Provide assistance to visiting artists;

Prepare, distribute, and file invoices, artist contracts, and expense reports. Qualifications: The Festival Assistant must be able to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities, and meet deadlines, and be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends preceding and during the festival in July-August. They should have a love for special event management, provide outstanding customer service, be an enthusiastic professional, and be able to build relationships with our patrons and artists. This position requires flexibility; excellent communication skills, including writing, proofreading, and speaking; the ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments; and excellent interpersonal skills both in person and via phone. Office and financial administration, volunteer coordination, and marketing and communications experience is considered an asset.

3. Call for Submissions for the Fredericton Region Museum’s Artist in Residence Program The Fredericton Region Museum’s Artist in Residence program seeks to inspire artists with Fredericton’s diverse and rich heritage. Art inspired by history can enhance connections between the museum and the public through its various forms. The program is open to local artists, working in a visual media, whose work relates to Fredericton’s history. The artist studio will be located in a main floor gallery. During the three or six weeks of residency, the artist(s) will be expected to work in the studio allowing visitors access to the creative process. They will be expected to provide at least one of the following: a public lecture, a program geared towards the youth community, or a workshop. They will also agree to participate in media interviews intended to promote the program. Artists are to provide their own working materials and assist with promoting the residency. The Fredericton Region Museum will provide a gallery in a heritage building (approximately 9.5’ x 14.6’) to be converted into a studio, artist stipend, and advertising, as well as opportunities to display and sell their existing artwork in the gallery during their residency. Essential Qualifications The Artist-in-Residence will be a practicing artist with a portfolio of published or exhibited works. Applications are accepted from visual artists and other creative individuals. Dates of Residency Residencies are for July and August, with two Artists in Residence, who will be on site for three consecutive weeks each within the eight weeks, or one artist for six weeks. The exact dates within the residency are flexible and will be detailed in a signed agreement. Hours of Residency A minimum of four hours a day and five days each week, preferably in the afternoons plus community events, such as Canada Day and during the museum open house event if it falls on a residency week. Short statement of interest and a description of work to be carried out during the residency. The applicant should also describe why they wish to do the residency, and what particular perspective they will bring to the program

Indication of public access programming to be offered by the artist, for the public at large and for young people

Indication of which three weeks the artist preferred for the residency

Call For New Brunswick Artists: Arts Bank New Brunswick artists are invited to apply to work with the New Brunswick Art Bank, Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture as an interpreter-presenter for a visual arts exhibition to be presented in Anglophone schools from September 2016 – June 2017. The artist/interpreter will interpret and present artworks by New Brunswick artists represented in the VanGO! exhibition for New Brunswick K-12 schools. The VanGO! exhibition will be installed in an open space in the school where all students have access. VanGO! consists of 8 - 10 artworks in a variety of art forms and media. The artist/interpreter will be required to work one day at each school, for a total of 10 work days. Working with the Art Bank, artists will develop their own program for elementary, middle and high school students and teachers, based on the artworks on exhibition. Artists are encouraged to use visual thinking strategies*, visual literacy techniques, and a multidisciplinary approach to interpreting the artworks. The artist/interpreter will be responsible for working with each school to schedule their school visits. Expenses include travel, accommodation, meals and artist fees. The deadline is June 3, 2016 Applications must include a cv/résumé outlining the artist’s experience presenting artworks to student audiences, and knowledge of visual literacy and diverse art forms and media. The Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts is an award that is determined on a competitive basis, and may be awarded to a candidate who:

Intends to study arts at a recognized institution or with a recognized private instructor for the purpose of pursuing a career as a professional artist of arts professional.

8. 2017 Charlotte Glencross Gallery Submission Exhibitions are selected by a panel of respected artists and art educators. Exhibitions are scheduled on an ongoing basis, with the jury meeting once or twice per year.
