Arts Integrated Unit:Immigration: How does it effect us

The Value of Arts Integrated UnitsIntegration among subjects has quickly become one of the most important

elements of teaching today. Similarly, we are expected, as teachers, to give real-world

meaning to subjects and topics. With the emphasis on math, language arts, and textscores in education expectations, it is all too easy to neglect the value of art in education.

Although many school art programs dont promote the real-life connections we expect

from the subject, it can easily be connected to other subjects and current social issues.

Overall, the importance of art integration is that art itself exists as a perspective of thereal world around us, and all the combined elements of art serve as excellent links

connecting the world around us to education we are expected to obtain.

The Value of an Immigration UnitDespite our rapidly shrinking world of advancing transportation and

communication, cultural differences still separate us and make expansive moves hard toadapt to. Similarly, temporary or permanent immigration has always been a big part of

American history, both positively and negatively. Even today, immigration is under

much scrutiny by the government. I feel that it is important for students to know and

understand the situation of those who have given up everything simply to move to a(hopefully) better place. This lesson also supports student interest in their own family

history and heritage, thus inspiring a greater understanding of ones self.
