The Listies are the maestros of children’s theatre. Their inventive storytelling, comedic genius and infectious imaginations make kids all over the world fall in love with theatre while howling with laughter.

Now, they have created a very cheeky, very clever, wonderfully interactive version of Hamlet for children. This brilliantly-crafted comic adventure into theatre shatters the fourth wall and glues it back together with silly jokes and wonderfully inspired narration.

Hamlet is full of thrilling things that kids love in a good story: ghosts, castles, sword fights, bodily fluids and spooky stuff. With perfectly pitched gags, expertly timed stage trickery and special effects unlike anything kids have seen before, this is a very cleverly disguised Shakespearean tragedy for everyone aged five and over.

The Listies take kids on a fun-filled hour of clowning mayhem that mischievously celebrates the excitement and unpredictable

nature of live theatre. It’s not only the most fun you can have in the theatre, it’s the best school excursion ever!

At Seymour, we know that the key to a student’s success in literacy is their ability to understand meaning. In 2018, the Seymour presents a diverse program filled with events aimed at revealing the complexity, richness and ambiguity of humanity as expressed through the telling of great stories. In a season covering Shakespeare and Australian classics, through to group devised pieces created by refugees, our quality productions will deepen comprehension of the texts and themes your students are engaging with each day.

Next year marks a decade since the Apology to the Stolen Generations and, in tribute to this, we are presenting two outstanding shows written and performed by Indigenous artists: The Season and Which Way Home. This is a wonderful opportunity for your students to experience plays by Aboriginal authors giving insight into diverse experiences of Aboriginal people.

Another highlight is workshops for students and teachers with artists from one of the world’s great theatre companies, Complicité. They will present a teacher professional development workshop in HSC Drama topic 7: Multi-Discipline Theatre alongside workshops for Drama students in group devising. Spaces are limited – so my advice is to book soon.

In view of recent syllabus changes, the Seymour has ensured that our program reflects the current NSW curriculum and we have carefully assessed the learning outcomes according to the age and stage of the students. Read on and, if you have queries or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

THE HAPPINESS BOXThe Happiness Box tells the story of three best friends, a lizard, a monkey and a frog, who find a magical box and embark upon a journey through the jungle to discover the secret of happiness. In an act of inspiring optimism, this delightful tale was originally written for Changi Gaol’s child prisoners in 1942 by Australian POW David Griffin, and illustrated by fellow POW Leslie Greener, while they were interned in the camp. It has been adapted and scored for young audiences by award-winning Australian composer Bryony Marks to capture the sense of wonder, trepidation and delight of the friends’ adventure. Greener’s beautiful illustrations from the 1947 edition of book accompany the narration and music.

As well as introducing children to the sounds of the orchestra, The Happiness Box’s themes are timeless and universal: the value of kindness, resilience, industriousness, humour, courage, and most importantly, the value of friendship.

Conductor Iain GrandageNarrator Jay Laga’aiaBased on the book The Happiness Box written by David Griffin and illustrated by Leslie Greener. Music Bryony Marks

INTRODUCED SPECIESWhat happens when man-made objects enter the natural landscape? What will happen to these pristine environments? Composer Katy Abbott uses the true events of a cargo ship in 1992, spilling nearly 29,000 duck bath toys into the North Pacific Ocean, as the catalyst for her work.

Inspired by artist Matthew Quick’s body of work, Introduced Species is a three movement aural depiction of the ‘Trash Vortex’, one of the Pacific Ocean’s ‘garbage patches’. Katy Abbott brings the plastic that pollutes our oceans into the orchestra and challenges us to hear our environment.

This unique schools concert features composer Katy Abbott live on stage with conductor Iain Grandage and the SSO in an exploration of the ocean through sound and image.

SUITCASE STORIES 2018

AS PART OF SEYMOUR’S SEASON OF A PACIFIST’S GUIDE TO THE WAR ON CANCER, COMPLICITÉ ARTISTS TRAVELLING WITH THE PRODUCTION OFFER THE FOLLOWING WORKSHOPS TO AID THE STUDY OF HSC DRAMA

TREEHOUSE THEATRE PRESENTS

In Suitcase Stories 2018, young refugees who have experienced the horror of war, trauma and persecution, perform their own true stories in a moving live performance.

The tales of triumph, heartbreak and survival are told with humour and honesty – you will laugh, you will cry and you will begin to understand.

Originally from places you hear about on the news, these students now attend Holroyd High School and Intensive English Centre. The show will assist your students to better appreciate the lives of refugees who are struggling with current resettlement issues and past trauma. Refugee students in the audience will feel acknowledged and recognised.

Come and enjoy a life-changing 90 minutes. As one audience member noted, you will leave transformed; “I laughed so hard in the beginning, cried in the middle and couldn’t stop smiling at the end.”

Contains themes of war and violence.

THE SHIFTING HEART WHITE BOX THEATRE AND SEYMOUR CENTRE PRESENT

BY RICHARD BEYNON

White Box Theatre, the producer of Blackrock (Seymour Centre) and Hurt (Belvoir Downstairs), presents the award-winning Australian classic The Shifting Heart by Richard Beynon.

Set during Christmas in Melbourne in the 1950s, the story follows Italian immigrants, the Bianchis, as they attempt to create a new life in Collingwood, Australia. Tragedy strikes when Gino returns to the family home bloodied and battered.

The Shifting Heart explores themes of friendship, marriage, trust, honesty and family but also offers an insight to the psychology of racism and its victims. This is a wonderful drama representing the migrant experience from Australia’s recent past.

Described as “exciting, funny and intensely moving”, The Shifting Heart asks us to reflect on the tragedy the Bianchis experience,

its relevance to the stories of contemporary immigrants and our responsibility in those stories.

This production will be multilingual. Contains some adult themes and mild violence.

THE TEMPEST SPORT FOR JOVE THEATRE CO. AND SEYMOUR CENTRE PRESENT

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

After a thrilling and captivating run in 2017, Sport For Jove’s exceptional 100 minute production of The Tempest returns to the stage.

One of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, The Tempest is a symphonic vision of forgiveness, discovery and self-discovery. Famous for its language, context, enchanting characters and breathtaking theatricality; a reflection of the world’s most famous playwright at the height of his powers and at the end of his remarkable career.

This tempest is not only in Prospero – the storm lies in the contradictions and ambiguities the story throws up about freedom and slavery, civilisation and barbarism, legacy and letting go, lust and chastity, youth and age, revenge and forgiveness. The sea is a place of transformation but also represents the capriciousness of nature, chaos or fate. The sea is our greatest metaphor for discovery.

YEARS 7 – 11

In 2018, with a fresh eye toward the changes to the HSC Syllabus, Sport For Jove’s Artistic Director, Damien Ryan, will bring the full force of his acclaimed theatricality and invention to a brand new vision of Shakespeare’s astonishing classic. This production will be 100 minutes of pure theatrical magic.

In the heat of the shortest night of the year, young lovers and work-a-day dreamers plunge into a world between sleep and waking, where “everything seems double”. One of Shakespeare’s truly essential works, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, like every fairy-story, warns us that family, love and friendship are fragile – when parents are selfish, their children break the rules; when love rears its head, friendships are forgotten; and that’s just the mortal world.

The best possible introduction young people can have to the theatre and amongst the most powerful visions of growing up ever written.

WHICH WAY HOME

A road trip comedy 80,000 years in the making…

Tash and her Dad are going on a road trip. Home to country, where the sky is higher and the world goes on forever.

It’s a long way from the wide streets and big old houses of Tash’s childhood. Two Black faces in a very white suburb. Dad still thinks he’s the king of cool, but he’s an old fella now. It’s time for Tash to take him home.

Infused with humour and heart, Which Way Home draws on writer Katie Beckett’s own memories of growing up with her single Aboriginal father and explores themes of family, growing up and grief.

ILBIJERRI Theatre Company tells stories about what it means to be Indigenous in Australia today. They support the empowerment of Indigenous artists and communities to have a powerful voice in determining the future of Australia. This will be a wonderful opportunity for your students to experience a play by an Aboriginal author giving insight into diverse experiences of Aboriginal people.

THE SEASON

“…the key to The Season’s winning charm: it may be about moonbird people but this is a play rooted in the everyday with an ability to laugh about itself – hard.” The Guardian

“Tradition, place, family and pride are the subjects of Nathan Maynard’s salty comedy, one that transports its audience to the islands lying off Tasmania’s northeast tip.” Sydney Morning Herald

It’s mutton-bird season and the Duncans are back in their plucking shed. On remote Dog Island, amid the threat of snakes, and Pop’s explosive temper, the family reunites with a country and culture still very much alive. Hatchets are buried, secrets told, pranks pulled and deep connections drawn.

Set in Bass Strait, The Season is written by Tasmanian Aboriginal writer and performer Nathan Maynard, who has been endorsed by elders to share the stories of his community. His voice is as sharp as a tack and as blunt as a brick, and with it he tells a disarming, funny story with a crucial point to make; “We’re still here”.

Featuring some of the best Aboriginal talent from around the country including Trevor Jamieson (The Secret River), Tammy Anderson (I Don’t Wanna Play House) and Kelton Pell (The Gods of Wheat Street), you’ll be fascinated and inspired. And you’ll laugh your head off.

This production is recommended for ages 15+. Contains coarse language and sexual references.

By Duncan Macmillan and Chris Rapley

In May 2017 Seymour Centre presented the Australian premiere of 2071, a lecture-style performance created by one of the world’s foremost climate change scientists, professor Chris Rapley (UK) and playwright Duncan Macmillan.

In 2071, Rapley presents the detailed science behind our changing climate, tracking temperature change since the dawn of mankind and explaining how the Earth’s component systems are now out of balance. This beautiful production combines amazing 3D projections and an original music score

HSC SYMPOSIUM SERIES

SPORT FOR JOVE THEATRE CO. AND SEYMOUR CENTRE PRESENT

“I couldn’t recommend them more highly.”

Head Teacher English, Castle Hill High School

“They loved the symposium:the actors, their performances and your insights.”English Teacher, Penrith Christian School

Sport For Jove’s acclaimed intensive HSC Symposiums are back with detailed analysis and performance work on Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Richard III, The Tempest, Henry IV and The Crucible.

Scene work from the plays is interspersed with expert commentary from Damien Ryan and his team – exploring famous scenes and speeches in multiple ways, opening up diverse critical readings, unlocking language and character, hearing actors discuss the plays’ famous ambiguities and challenges, and answering students’ questions.

A complete, hands-on experience that combines the unfiltered relationship students need with the plays’ action and narrative while also ensuring they are ‘watching with understanding’; in other words, extracting the key ingredients and critical thinking required to write on the plays under exam conditions.

Every aspect of the work is geared toward the curriculum and the specific needs of students studying these plays. Detailed student notes are also offered with these Symposiums but there are limited seats, don’t miss out.
