EmmanuelJal,formerchildsoldier,hip‐hopartist,peaceactivistwillperformandspeakaspartofthisseries,butalsoasthefeaturedspeakerforallArtsandHumanitiesFoundationsectionsthisfall.MostofthosecourseswillusethedocumentaryWARCHILD,abouthislife,aswell.WatchhisTEDtalkhere:

EmmanuelJalwasborninwar‐tornSudan,andwhilehedoesn’tknowexactlywhen,hebelievesitwasintheearly1980s.Hewastakenfromhisfamilyhomein1987whenhewassixorsevenyearsold,andsenttofightwiththerebelarmyinSudan’sbloodycivilwar.Fornearlyfiveyears,hewasa“childwarrior,”putintobattlecarryinganAK‐47thatwastallerthanhewas.

Bythetimehewas13,hewasaveteranoftwocivilwarsandhadseenhundredsofhisfellowchildsoldiersreducedtotakingunspeakablemeasuresastheystruggledtosurviveonthekillingfieldsofSouthernSudan.Afteraseriesofharrowingevents,hewasrescuedbyaBritishaidworker(EmmaMcCune)whosmuggledhimintoNairobitoraisehimasherown.”
