Welcome to Arkansas Academy of Dance

Established in 2000, Arkansas Academy of Dance is a premier training institute in classical ballet. Our service

comes in partnership with Arkansas Festival Ballet. Our objective is simple: high caliber training with a focus

on our students and their progress. We guide each student’s development with an approved curriculum,

appropriate teaching techniques and choreography. Our program promotes students to pursue the discipline of

dance with focus, diligence and consistency.

Our mission is to educate children in the art of classical ballet. Our desire to share formal training encourages

students to meet new goals through their commitment, intelligence and hard work. Our faculty strives to ensure

that students receive the highest standard of dance training. Through each student's enjoyment and

comprehension of dance, they will build character; gain self-esteem and discipline of the mind and body. We

hope this knowledge and experience will guide and assist them in achieving great things. From our nurturing

environment, students will form a love for the art of ballet. We believe that each young artist’s experience with

Arkansas Academy of Dance will be influential in his or her lives and future.

Tuition

Tuition payments may be made by the month, semester or year. Monthly tuition payments are managed in the

form of an automatic bank draft or credit card draft. Semester/ annual tuition payments can be accepted in

the form of check, credit card or cash. Drafts will be executed on the 3rd of every month (September-May) or

for months that your child is enrolled. There are no transfers of tuition, refunds or credits. Tuition is due in full

on months with holidays. There is a family tuition discount of 10% per additional child. Tuition

statements/receipts are not posted, for automated drafts, unless payments are invalid. Arkansas Academy of

Dance accepts Visa and MasterCard.

Enrollment

Take advantage of Online Registration - new and returning students can register at

www.ArkansasAcademyofDance.com. Before participating in classes, returning students will need to update

accounts, liability release form and make class or level choices. Returning students will receive a level

placement/assignment during evaluation week (May) of each year. If you are unsure of your child’s placement,

email us for information. In-studio registration is available by appointment or on designated registration days.

New academy students may register online, by email or appointment/phone consultation. A non-refundable

annual family enrollment fee of $55.00 is required of all new and returning students. Early registration ensures

placement in a class of your desired day and time. Students are encouraged to register before the first day of

classes. Minimum class size of five students is required for a class to subsist. Teacher assignments and class

schedules are subject to change based on enrollment needs. Placement into a level is at the discretion of the

Academy Director & Ballet Mistress.

Quality in Excellence is offered through the academy’s highest standards in training. Our curriculum offers a solid and

complete foundation in classical ballet technique with optional performance participation. Our program emphasizes each

new stage of training, by building upon previous levels to create strong and defined dancers. Students of the Young

Dancer Division learn the fundamentals of classical ballet. The design of this class keeps students in motion while

promoting creativity. In addition, the students focus on rhythmical and coordination skills to help strengthen their

growing bodies. The Student Dancer Division offers age appropriate technique classes to instill the physical basis of

classical ballet. Multiple classes each week promote strength for proper placement and technical skill. Students in this

level learn to isolate and lengthen muscles by holding sustained positions with an increase in stretching. Dancers acquire

a finer sense of musicality in their movement as strength allows for secured positions or quickness of movements. The

Pre Apprentice, Apprentice & Pre Professional Divisions elevate dancers to performance standards, through intense

training. Upper level students focus on refining technical skills with strength and agility. These students show focus,

interest, respect, good character and work ethic in classes and performances. Dancers must train diligently with a strong

commitment to advancing in discipline, stamina and physical success. Each student is evaluated before level placement is

decided. Students must maintain full participation/attendance in order to progress at the expected pace or make level

advancements.

Supplementary classes reinforce curriculum goals for our academy students. Pre Pointe Classes provide further

development and strengthen the muscles necessary to go en pointe. Pre Pointe Classes stress correct alignment with

proper placement and execution in ballet technique. The extra time spent with students will allow teachers to assess

readiness in an atmosphere conducive to building and evaluating important skills. Students are invited to begin Pre Pointe

Classes at the appropriate time in their training. Boys/Men's Classes recognize the strength and movement qualities that

are specific to male dancers. Students develop the strength through the groundwork of technique before relaying it to

jumps, turns and presentation. Partnering Classes give students the opportunity to work together while gaining

responsibility in lifting, supporting and dancing in unison. Variation Classes offer advanced students an opportunity to

demonstrate the cohesion of technique, endurance and presentation. Dancers approach these classes with complete mental

focus and physical readiness. Intermediate to advance level dancers' foundation is enhanced with Pilates & Body

Conditioning Classes. These weekly classes challenge students to work intelligently by finding superfluous strength

through their core muscles and upper body while extending the use of legs and feet.

Performance Experiences highlight the growth of a dancer. Dancers learn to apply practical skills, acquired in training,

to rehearsal and performance. Through our partnership with Arkansas Festival Ballet, students gain knowledge in

repertoire ranging from full-length ballets to new and collaborative works. Each season offers students and dancers

opportunities to engage with musicians, orchestras, singers and other artistic talents through our collaborative

engagements.

Enrichment Opportunities allow students time to gain information on relative topics, such as nutrition and wellness,

injury prevention, resume preparation and networking. Their research and understanding ensures a plan for pursuing

university acceptance/scholarships and contracts with professional dance companies. Through our RDA membership,

students and company dancers have access to vital information and networking.

Upper level academy students are encouraged to further their training during the summer months by attending Intensive

Training Programs. Arkansas Academy of Dance and Arkansas Festival Ballet host a series of “Summer Intensive

Auditions” for opportunities to train with prestigious institutes. Guest company auditions are not specified or limited to

the following: The Joffrey Ballet School, Joffrey Texas, Oklahoma City Ballet, Kansas City Ballet and Long Beach

Ballet. These auditions occur January-March of each year and are posted online and in studio. In addition, Arkansas

Festival Ballet hosts a 2 week intensive, for non-academy & academy students, as preparation for their major intensives or

to serve as the primary summer intensive training.

In pursuit of Excellence, academy students have attended top ballet training programs and schools including University

of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University, Princeton University, Southern Methodist University, Pacific Northwest Ballet,

Houston Ballet, American Academy of Ballet, School of Joffrey Ballet, Joffrey South, North Carolina Dance Theatre,

North Carolina School of the Arts, Ballet Magnificat, The Rock, Tulsa Ballet, Next Generation Ballet, School of

American Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and the International Ballet Competition.

All programs and activities, rights and privileges of Arkansas Academy of Dance students are extended to students of any

special needs, race, color, creed or national origin.

S t a n d a r d s i n T r a i n i n g

Observation, Participation and Progress

To help maintain the focus of our students during class times, we ask that family members and friends remain in

the waiting areas. We invite you to join us during Bring a Friend and Sibling Week & Parent Participation

Week.

Our instructors are devoted to your child’s learning and continued training. Students are evaluated for progress

at the conclusion of the nine-month season (May). The academy will no longer hold a Demonstration

Performance at the conclusion of each dance year. Families and friends will be invited into the studio for

Observation Week. Arkansas Academy of Dance encourages students to audition for Arkansas Festival Ballet’s

productions of Storybook Ballets and The Nutcracker (minimum age 7 to audition).

Dancer Scholarship Program

Arkansas Academy of Dance offers tuition scholarships to students/families who qualify for assistance.

Scholarships are limited. Distribution of scholarship funds is based on need and merit. Older students

requesting tuition assistance can participate in a work-study scholarship program to help offset tuition cost.

Applications with requirements are available. Please submit all requests to the Academy Director.

Male Scholarship Program

As part of our mission to reach great heights in ballet, the academy encourages male students to gain the

physical skills of classical ballet; aiding them to acquire the knowledge they need to succeed at any level and

furthermore - launch their careers. The academy offers a scholarship program designed for boys age 12 and

older, who are serious about training. Recipients may be at any level of training to receive this scholarship.

Recipients must adhere to the scholarship guidelines in order to keep the scholarship. The scholarship is good

for all academy classes during the summer and school year. Summer intensive training or ballet workshops are

not part of the scholarship program.

Mallory Grace Milton Scholarship

Arkansas Academy of Dance offers tuition scholarships for Summer Camps and Fall-Spring Sessions, through

the Mallory Grace Milton Scholarship. Applications are available in the lobby.

Cranford Program

Arkansas Academy of Dance in partnership with Arkansas Festival Ballet offers training and performance

opportunities to accomplished Arkansas resident dancers and college students who are seeking ways to further

their training. Ask for details.

Rebecca Miller Stalcup – Artistic Director & Ballet Instructor Ms. Stalcup founded Arkansas Academy of Dance & Arkansas Festival Ballet in 2000, with a team of devoted supporters. She

continues to promote the highest standards of training and demonstrates a unique ability to instill, in her students, a joy for dance

along with an appreciation of formal ballet etiquette. Ms. Stalcup engages the talents and expertise of established instructors to suit

the demands of each level of training offered in the academy. Over the past 25 years, she has served as instructor within the region and

choreographer for youth gymnast of Louisiana and Texas. She continues to support local and guest talents through her choreographer

position with Praeclara Arts Organization. As Artistic Director for Arkansas Festival Ballet, she has produced, choreographed and

received awards for original works and statewide recognition for her contribution to the dance community. Through her leadership,

Arkansas Academy of Dance and Arkansas Festival Ballet continue to work collaboratively with many local arts organizations

including annual appearances with Conway Symphony Orchestra & Praeclara. Ms Stalcup serves as board of director with Regional

Dance America/ SW and the National Society of Arts & Letters.

Melinda Tobian – Ballet Mistress & Ballet Instructor Ms. Tobian is well known for her technique-focused instruction and her emphasis on the discipline of classical ballet. Trained in

Seattle and New York, Ms. Tobian danced professionally with Joffrey Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Ballet Arizona and Ballet Arkansas. Her

repertoire, acquired over a 20-year performance career, includes the classical ballets of George Balanchine, Marius Petipa, and Michel

Fokine, as well as the contemporary choreography of Lambrous Lambrou, Jean Paul Comelin and Leslie Jane Pessemier. Ms. Tobian,

a former artistic director for Ballet Arkansas, has trained students across Arkansas for over 25 years. Her students have gained

acceptance to many professional schools of ballet, including American Ballet Theatre, School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest

Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, North Carolina School of the Arts and Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Her students have also

earned admission into dance degree programs at NYU–Tisch School of the Arts, SMU, Butler University and the University of

Oklahoma. Ms. Tobian has produced many original works, including Synergy, Scherzo recognized throughout the southwest region.

Paula Mallory - Pilates Instructor, CPT Ms. Mallory was introduced to Pilates at the University of Oklahoma where she enjoyed taking classes and private lessons as part of

her fitness regimen as a member of the Oklahoma Festival Ballet Company. After graduating with a BFA in Dance in 2000, Paula

returned to Little Rock. She earned her Pilates certification from Centerworks Pilates in Wichita, Kansas. Before opening The Pilates

Studio of Little Rock with Sheila in September 2003 she taught Pilates for health clubs, yoga studios and ballet schools. Paula is a

member of the Pilates Method Alliance. Ms. Paula is the proud parent of Rosemary Mallory, a student in Arkansas Academy of

Dance.

Meredith Short Loy – Ballet & Modern - Contemporary Instructor Ms. Loy is a native of Little Rock, Meredith Loy joined Ballet Arkansas in 2015 and is currently dancing principal and soloist roles

for her Arkansas audience. She received her early training under the direction of Rebecca Miller Stalcup, Melinda Tobian, and Mark

Bush at Arkansas Academy of Dance and Arkansas Festival Ballet. Ms. Loy is a graduate from the University of Oklahoma where she

received her BFA in ballet performance from the School of Dance department led by Mary Margaret Holt, Jeremy Lindberg, Clara

Cravey, and Ilya Kozadayev. .Her most notable roles include; Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker staged by Mary Margaret Holt

and Ilya Kozadayev, Haydn’s The Seasons Austria tour choreographed by Mary Margaret Holt and Ilya Kozadayev, Raymonda Pas de

Dix principle couple choreographed by Ilya Kozadayev after Marius Petipa, Le Corsaire Pas de Deux staged by Clara Cravey, Swan

Lake Pas de Trois staged by Ilya Kozadayev. She has recently performed pas de deux, “Flutter”, choreographed by Ilya Kozadayev

and Balanchine's Pas de Trois (Glinka).

Matthew Morley - Ballet Instructor Mr. Morley is a resident company dancer with Arkansas Festival Ballet. His artistic training began in the theatre with drama and

music. He received his formal training with Arkansas Academy of Dance and quickly gained rank both regionally and locally. He has

received full tuition and artist privileges with The Joffrey South, International Ballet Competition as part of the Southwest Regional

Dance America Integrated work. Matthew has performed principal roles in Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin, Pinocchio, The

Nutcracker, Snow White and Hansel & Gretel. As a guest dancer throughout the Southwest Region, Mr. Morley has had the

opportunity to dance under the direction of Paul Mejia, Thom Clower as well as Susan and Buddy Trevino. As a regional guest artist,

he has performed Cinderella, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Gaite Parisienne and Les Patineurs. He has also danced the lead roles in

Carmina Burana, Peter Grimes, Dido & Aeneas, Dracula Unearthed

Hair in pony tail or comfortable style.

Pilates mats and tension bands are required. Studio supply of mats and bands may be limited. Dancers are welcome

to bring their own. Please label your personal items. Dancers are welcome to store these at the studio as long as

space allows.

Etiquette & Policies

Classical Ballet is a family affair! The joy gained from this art form is not only for our academy students; we

invite the entire family to the barre. During class time, students will be encouraged to use appropriate dancer’s

etiquette; helping them to show respect toward classmates and instructors. As part of their training, we will

guide them towards a better understanding of proper ballet manners. Please review the following reminders -

with your help, we will continue to offer great training and aid in the growth of great individuals. Together we

are nurturing many wonderful learning experiences!

Entering and Exiting the Dance Facility

Students (all ages) should wear appropriate clothing over their dance attire. Students are welcome to change into dance attire

at the studio.

Make sure to wear an alternative pair of shoes (street shoes instead of dance shoes) from the parking lot into the facility.

Students should arrive on time for class.

Students are asked to remain in the school lobby and not outdoors while waiting for rides. Prompt retrieval of your child will

ensure his/her safety.

New facility safety measures will begin this dance year. Details will be available soon

Waiting Areas

In preparation for class, students and their parent/guardian are welcome to arrive early. Please attend to young students prior

to their class beginning.

Please remind your precious minions not run, jump on the furniture and to always use inside voices

We LOVE to share our books and toys with all of our favorite people! Remember to put everything away after enjoying it.

Families are always welcome to stay the duration of their child’s class time.

Class Time for Students

Students should enter the studio/ dance space only after the instructor has invited them into the room.

Our students are so patient! Each class will exit the room before the next class enters.

No chewing gum, food or drink in the studio.

No running or hanging on barres.

A placement class may be required in order for students to participate in intermediate to upper levels.

Students enrolled in levels, Ballet 1- Company, must attend the full schedule of classes.

Consistent attendance in all classes, in which they are enrolled, will allow student's the time needed to progress to the next

level. Make up classes for missed classes are available at a level lower or a level designated by his/her teacher.

All students enrolled in classes have assigned class attire and are required to wear designated class attire in order to

participate.

Students should come to class with their hair groomed neatly. Female students age 7 and older should wear hair secured

neatly in a bun with no loose hair.

An instructor may ask an intermediate to upper level student to observe a class for which they arrived more than fifteen

minutes late. Participation with improper preparation could result in injury.

The academy ballet mistress will evaluate students at the appropriate time for pointe shoes. Based on the strength necessary

with mental and physical readiness, the academy will only offer pointe classes to those students who have receive supervised

preparation for pointe work. The academy does not offer pointe classes to students who do not attend the required number of

technique and strengthening classes.

Families and Guardians

Please remain outside the studio while classes are in session. Disruptions during class time slow the pace of the class and

affect the focus and progress for all students.

Only registered students allowed in class/ studios. Please no siblings as participants or observers.

Due to privacy issues and respect, offices and wardrobe/prop closets are for staff use only.

Arkansas Academy of Dance will follow the Little Rock School Districts Inclement Weather School Closings Policy; all

closings will be posted online at www.ArkansasAcademyofDance.com.

LIABILITY RELEASE (must be signed before class participation)

The undersigned parent, legal guardian, next of kin, or participant acknowledges that even though every effort

is made to provide a safe, accident-free environment, incidents may occur.

In consideration for being accepted by the Arkansas Academy of Dance for participation in its functions, we (I)

being 21 years of age or older do for ourselves (myself) and for and on behalf of my child-participant, if said

child is not 21 years of age or older, hereby release, forever discharge and agree to hold harmless the

aforementioned Arkansas Academy of Dance and the directors and teachers thereof from any and all liability,

claims, or demands for personal injury, sickness, or death, as well as property damage and expenses of any

nature whatsoever which may be incurred by the undersigned and the child-participant that occur while said

child is participating in a supervised trip or activity. This release from liability includes, but is not limited to,

volunteer parent supervised trips relating to meals during scheduled breaks.

Furthermore, we (I) (and on behalf of our (my) child-participation if under the age of 21 years) hereby assume

all risk of personal injury, sickness, death, damage and expense as a result of participation in recreating and

work activities involved therein.

The undersigned further agrees to hold harmless and indemnify said organization, its directors, employees, and

agents, for any liability sustained by said organization as the result of the negligent, willful or intentional acts of

said participant, including expenses incurred attendant thereto.

Only participant needs to sign if 21 years of age or older. If participants are under 21 both parents must sign

unless parents are separated or divorced, in which case the custodial parent must sign.
