1. Introduction to ADXWelcome to BERNINA ADX, a universal interface between the BERNINA embroidery software andBERNINA embroidery systems. ADX stands for Artista Data eXchange and handles the connectionbetween computer and several embroidery devices.
1.1. Using this guide
BERNINA ADX has flexible exchange capabilities, which make it easy to transfer or administerdesigns on storage devices.
This guide is divided into chapters that apply to the various features of design exchange and canbe invoked by the F1 key or the help button.
2. Installing your SoftwareBERNINA ADX is installed as an interface function library of the BERNINA Embroidery Software.For more details on software installation and computer requirements refer to the BERNINA
Embroidery Software User Manual.
2.1. Installing BERNINA ADX
The installation of BERNINA ADX is part of the Setup CD of the BERNINA Embroidery System.See more details on the Setup CD.
For proper use of BERNINA ADX, the following items have to be installed:
BERNINA Embroidery Software - Service Pack 3.1 or higher Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher Microsoft ActiveSync Version 3.1 for Windows 95, Version 3.5 for Windows 98 ... or higher Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
Check the following setup:
USB or serial cable is connected between BERNINA Embroidery System and computer Both systems are switched on and ready

2.2. Setup Connections for artista 200
The communication between BERNINA Embroidery Software and BERNINA Embroidery Systemdevices like
artista 200 sewing computer with embroidery module BERNINA artista Design Card CD-ROM
will be done by Microsoft ActiveSync. A USB cable is used for the physical connection between yourcomputer and the BERNINA Embroidery System.
2.2.1. Microsoft ActiveSyncThis software can be found on the Setup CD and has to beinstalled on your computer in advance. Details can be found onthe ActiveSync help pages.
2.2.2. USB cableThe connection between your computer and your EmbroiderySystem has to be done with the standard USB cable.Plug the cable into the USB ports on the artista 200 and yourcomputer.Microsoft ActiveSync is automatically activated and connects the artista 200 to your computer.
Whenever a connection fails, plug in the cable again and theautomatic connecting process starts - check the greensymbol in the task bar on your computer.
2.3. Setup Connections for artista 165 to 185 and R/W box
The communication between BERNINA Embroidery Software and BERNINA Embroidery Systemdevices like
artista 165, 170, 180 or 185 sewing computer with embroidery module BERNINA artista Design Card
will be done by a serial interface R232. A serial cable is used for the physical connection between yourcomputer and the BERNINA Embroidery System.

3. Downloading a design to your embroidery system
3.1. To download a design to your machine
3.1.1. Open a design, for example Eagle.ARTSee To open a design in the BERNINA Embroidery Software manual for details.
Click Design mode if you are not already working in Design mode.The opened design is displayed in actual size, in the center of the large hoop.

3.1.2. Click Write to MachineUse "Card/Machine Write" on the file menu or"Write to Machine" icon to write a design to a BERNINA artista device.
If no Embroidery System is preselected, you have to selectone first. To set an Embroidery System for the next start andkeep the dialog suppressed, just activate the checkbox underNext Start".
If you do not have the BERNINA Embroidery System attached to thecomputer correctly, an error dialog opens. Check that the cable isconnected correctly - refer to page 6.
The Write to Embroidery System dialog opens. Note that the dialog will look different depending onthe selected Embroidery System.

3.1.3. Click Embroider
The design is downloaded and opened on your embroidery system. When the transfer iscomplete a confirmation dialog opens. The BERNINA Embroidery System takes over thecontrol for the final stitchout or further modifications. Refer to the help on the BERNINA
Embroidery System. The Write to Embroidery System dialog closes automatically.
3.1.4. Click Download
Instead of Embroider use the download function to copy the design to the active storagelocation. The Write to Embroidery System dialog closes automatically. More details aboutdesign exchange and folder selection see page 12 (Administering Designs).
3.1.5. More FunctionalityMore functionality on this dialog is similar or the same as in the Read from Embroidery System andDesign Manager Dialog described in the following chapters.

4. Uploading a design from embroidery systemUse Card/Machine Read to upload a design from your embroidery systems memory and customizedesigns stored on your embroidery system using BERNINA Embroidery Software.
4.1. Open a design on an embroidery system
4.1.1. Setup your embroidery systemYour embroidery system must be on and connected with your computer.
4.1.2. Click Card/Machine Read..Use Card/Machine Read on the file menu to read a design from an embroiderysystem storage device. If no embroidery system is preselected, you have to
select it first. Refer to page 8.
The dialog Read from Embroidery System and Design Manager opens.

4.1.3. Select a storage deviceChoose one of the following devices. The active device is highlighted.
Embroidery System Personal Design Card CD-ROM
4.1.4. Select a folderChoose appropriate folder.
All navigation functions will be described in more detail on page 13.
4.1.5. Click EditTo transfer the selected design to BERNINA Embroidery Software click this button.
The selected design will be automatically opened to the BERNINA Embroidery Software Designscreen as a new design.
To edit the design follow the instructions in the BERNINA Embroidery Software manual.To save or stitch out the modified design refer to page 9.
4.1.6. Other embroidery system
To connect another embroidery system double click on shown deviceand follow the instruction. The ADX function must be restarted.

5. Administering your designsDesigns can be stored in different storage devices on the embroidery system or your computer.Designs can be renamed, deleted or even moved to other folders. The design files are arranged infolders and can be handled in a manner similar to file manager.Some limitations have been placed to ensure proper use.
5.1. Startup Design Manager
Use Card/Machine Read on the file menu to start the design manager.
The dialog shows two design file areas. Upper area shows designs in a storage device like the BERNINA embroidery system, personal
design card or CD-ROM. Lower area shows designs on your computer.
With this dialog you can copy single design files in both directions. Every time a transferable design isselected, the appropriate arrow button gets activated, shown by a color change from gray to blue, andthe copy operation can be performed by pressing this arrow button.
This dialog is also used for editing a design on your embroidery system using the edit button.
