They are great singers and musicians, they work hard, have great original material, and they are willing to grow and take risks. But every great band also has something that makes them unique: A different and recognizable sound, they way they interact and play off of each other, and the way their personalities shine through. Flatt Lonesome’s third release, Runaway Train, leaves no question that they are a great band and an unstoppable force. The album kicks off with the hard- charging, passionate “You’ll Pay,” the first single and an original by banjo player Paul Harrigill and one of the album producers, Danny Roberts. The signature sibling harmonies of Charli, Kelsi and Buddy Robertson are jaw-dropping on the record in the same way they are when you hear their impressive live show. It is this passion for vocal performance that shines on “You’re the One,” a masterful remake of the 1990 Dwight Yoakam song that transcends the original, as well as other selections like “Still Feeling Blue” and “Don’t Come Running.” Soul-stirring three part harmony Gospel songs are more present on this release. All of them are original and impressively delivered with Kelsi and Charli sharing lead duties. With that said, their musicianship in no way comes up short of their vocal talent. Leads are handed off as if it were a conversation of sorts—sophisticated, complimentary, many times explosive, though always tasteful. A first for them on this album is the inclusion of an instrumental, the hard-edged ”Road to Nottingham,” showing each player can certainly hold a place in the best picking circles. Flatt Lonesome has an affinity for country sounds and has the ability to, at times, blend those influences into their sound. “Runaway Train” shows why the band has become a particular favorite of renowned country artists like Lee Ann Womack, Daryle Singletary, and Vince Gill. With the momentum like this, it’s easy to say that last year’s International Bluegrass Music Association’s Emerging Artist of the Year is this year’s Runaway Train.
