artistsandcommunitymembersgathertoexplorethemesoftransition,connection,and
innovationinspiredbythehistoryofformerFergusFallsStateHospital.
Wehostoneartistatatime,totalingapproximately9-20eachyear.Artistscanattendfor2to
12weeks,andliveinanewlyrenovatedapartmentintheformernurse'sdormitory.Studio
spacesaremadeavailablethroughoutthecommunityofFergusFalls.

desiretocollaboratewithorengage

RESIDENCYOVERVIEW
EligibilityForallapplicants:

§ Artistsofalldisciplinesandcareerlevels
areeligibletoapply.
ForHomecomingResidencyapplicantsonly:

theiryouth(age0–18)inthe9-county
regionofWestCentralMinnesota,and
nowliveoutsideofthatregion.
SelectionProcess
Residentartistsareselectedbya
committeeofSpringboardstaff,previous
HingeArtists,andcommunitypartners,
includingtheKaddatzGallery,WestCentral
Initiative,FriendsoftheKirkbride,Otter
TailCountyandTheCityofFergusFalls.
Timeline
March1st:Applicationdeadline
March22nd:Applicationreviewcompleted
April10th:Acceptanceletterssent
July–December:Residenciestakeplace
LiveandWorkSpaceArtistsstayintheCampusViewApartments,whicharenewlyrenovated
apartmentsinformernurse’sdormitorybuildingsonthecampusoftheFergus
FallsStateHospital.Oneapartmentisdesignatedforartists,andthegeneral
publicrentstheotherunits.Theapartmentsarelocatedapproximately1.5miles
fromdowntownFergusFalls.Themainhistorichospitalbuildingiscurrently
vacantandtheCityisundergoingacombinationofphaseddemolitionand
redevelopmentofthecampus.
Theapartmentisfullyfurnished,withcookingsupplies,dishes,towels,bedding,
WiFi,andalandlinetelephone.Coinoperatedwasheranddryerisonsite.Abike
isalsoavailable(pleasebringyourownhelmet).FergusFallsalsohaslimitedtaxi
andshuttleservice.Someartistsenjoyhavingtheircarsduringtheirstaysothey
canexploremorefreely,andothershavedonewellwithoutavehicle.
Studiospaceismadeavailablethroughoutthecommunitydependingonartist
needs,andSpringboardhasworkshop/exhibitspaceavailableaswell.
CommunitypartnerswhoofferstudiospacearetheKaddatzGallery,ACenter
fortheArtsandMStateCollege.
AccessibilityTheapartmentislocatedonthegroundlevel,withanaccessiblerestroom,parking,andawasheranddryer.
Accommodationscanalsobemadeforaccessiblestudiospace.Pleaseindicateanyaccessibilityrequestsin

AboutFergusFallsFergusFallsisa“micropolitan”townwithapopulationof13,600inWest
CentralMinnesota,locatedthreehoursnorthoftheTwinCities,andonehour
southofFargo,NorthDakota.FergusFallsisthecountyseatofOtterTail
County,whichishometotwostateparks,GlendaloughandMaplewood,and
morethan1,000lakes.Asaregionalhubforthearts,FergusFallshasseveral
artsandcultureorganizations,includingACenterfortheArts,theKaddatz
Gallery,LakeRegionArtsCouncil,FergusFallsSchoolofDance,MinnesotaState
Community&TechnicalCollege,SpringboardfortheArtsandtheOtterTail
CountyHistoricalSociety.Thecommunityisalsohometoseveralbeautiful
parksandbiketrails,includingPrairieWetlandsLearningCenter,andthe
CentralLakesbiketrail.Withathrivingartisanbusinessclimatethatincludesa
breweryandpizzaplace,anartisanbakery,locallyroastedcoffee,andseveral
boutiques,FergusFallsoffersauniqueblendofsmalltowncharmandurban-
inspiredcreativity.
AbouttheFergusFallsStateHospitalAlsoknownlocallyas“theKirkbrideBuilding”orthe“RegionalTreatment
Center/RTC,”isaformerstatehospitallocatedontheNorthendofUnionAve.,
1.5milesfromdowntownFergusFalls.ItwasbuiltintheKirkbridePlanstyle
andfirstopenedtopatientsin1890.Overthenextcenturyitoperatedasoneof
thestate'smainhospitalsforthementallyillandalsoworkedwithpeoplewith
developmentaldisabilitiesandchemicaldependencyissues.Itwasaddedtothe
NationalRegisterofHistoricPlacesin1986.Thehospitalclosedin2005.Various
proposalshavebeenmadetorepurposethesiteandbuildingssinceitsclosure,
butthemainbuilding’sfutureisstilluncertain.TheapartmentwhereHingeArts
takesplaceisownedbyalocaldeveloper.ThemainKirkbridecomplexis
currentlyownedbytheCityofFergusFalls.Unfortunately,artistsand
communitymembersdonotcurrentlyhaveaccesstothemainbuildingfor
toursorprojects.

collaborativeandentrepreneurial.Weunderstandthespecificneeds,challenges
andcompetenciesofcreativeindividualsandbusinessesbecauseourstaffis
comprisedentirelyofpracticingartists.Since1991,SpringboardfortheArtshas
connectedover100,000artistsandartorganizationswiththeskills,information
andservicestheyneedtomakealivingandalife.
