Most Famous Work is Nighthawks

“Hopper's rural New England scenes, such as Gas (1940), are no less wistful. In terms of subject matter, he can be compared to his contemporary, Norman Rockwell, but while Rockwell exalted in the rich imagery of small-town America, Hopper depicts it in the same sense of forlorn solitude that permeates his portrayal of city life. Here too, Hopper's work exploits vast empty spaces, represented by a lonely gas station astride an empty country road and the sharp contrast between the natural light of the sky, moderated by the lush forest, and glaring artificial light coming from inside the gas station.”(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. )

Helen FrankenthalerBorn in 1928

Born in New York.Studied under other famous artist, at schools like the Dalton School & Bennington College. The work of Jackson Pollock was the most influential to her style.

“she thinned her paint with turpentine to allow the diluted color to penetrate quickly into the fabric, rather than build up on the surface. This revolutionary soak-stain approach not only permitted the spontaneous generation of complex forms but also made any separation of figure from background impossible since the two became virtually fused a technique …” http://www.artchive.com/artchive/F/frankenthaler.html

The work of Ruben and Japanese prints inspired him. He loved color! Very important to himIn 1886 he moved to Paris to live with his brother Theo.“His nervous temperament made him a difficult companion and night-long discussions combined with painting all day undermined his health. He decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help found a school of art. Gauguin did join him but with disastrous results. In a fit of epilepsy, van Gogh pursued his friend with an open razor, was stopped by Gauguin, but ended up cutting a portion of his ear lobe off. Van Gogh then began to alternate between fits of madness and lucidity and was

sent to the asylum in Saint-Remy for treatment. “http://www.vangoghgallery.com/misc/bio.html
