The Basics
Review the Art Start Program Overview folder for program guidelines and details on how to create and teach a lesson
Art lessons are taught at least once a month for a total of 8-9 lessons during the year
Lessons should be tied to a Principle of Design or Element of Art (links to posters on website)
We encourage tying your lesson to a specific artist, if possible
Work with your teacher to get the curriculum for your grade and tie into units/sections, if possible
Other commitments for Art Start throughout the year include Square 1 art and participating in the Art Walk (alternating years)
Upload projects to our website!!
Supplies
Three locations for supplies – art room, kiln corner and production room
Please keep supplies organized in each location; if you need to borrow an item overnight to work from home, please return the item the following morning before school starts.
Requests for supplies should be emailed to Mandy or can be written on white boards provided in the art room Please allow enough time to process and receive
supplies! Please sign up for a supplies clean up day on sign
up genius; list of duties posted in the art room
Using a Portable or the Commons
We no longer have a portable specifically for art start.
Calendar for portable signups stay with Stephanie. If you want to use a portable you MUST signup on the calendar with your name/teacher/time.
Portables are also used by other groups so we MUST keep the room clean and organized. If the table and chair configuration is changed for art start, please return them to their original state before leaving.
Glass – Clay – Kiln
If you plan on utilizing glass or clay, your team must be present at the Glass and Clay Workshop. Date and time to be announced soon.
Projects done in glass or clay should be done in the classroom or in the Commons (reserve on master school schedule)
“How-to” information is posted on the website (extra ideas and examples provided in Art Start Room)
The kiln calendar is ONLY posted on the website and kiln use must be reserved there
Clay- 1 box per class for the year; Red and White Clay available
Glass- 1 glass project per class; 1X1 and 1x2 clear glass is no charge. Larger sizes available at a cost
Stipends
Review the Art Start Stipend Instructions document
Each class has $150 to help offset the costs of any special supplies or materials that we do not carry in the Art Start room. You may also use your stipend to bring a professional in to teach a lesson (ex. Mosaics, Fused Glass, Basket Weaving)
To get reimbursed fill out the "PTSA Payment/Expense Voucher Form“ and attach your receipts
Put your receipts and form in the last bin of the hanging file organizer which is in the Art Start room. Karen will review and submit to PTSA, check will be mailed to your house.
NO Charge for Fused Glass this year. Please plan your stipend for the year with your
team to avoid overages
Square 1 and Art Walk
Square 1 Art is our annual fundraiser – all funds go directly to the Art Start budget
Timing will be Jan/Feb More information on how program works on
website Plan your Square 1 project into your overall
lesson schedule so it is NOT an additional lesson but the project planned for January or February – a reminder email will be sent as Square 1 approaches.
Art Walk occurs in the Spring on alternating years We may do an “Art Week” in the school hallways
