Please join us for a unique trip to Tuscany with celebrated artist Isaac Julien to honor Robert Wilson. The fundraiser weekend celebrates the 10th anniversary of The Watermill Center and Robert Wilson’s achievements in the arts. Launching this summer, ART of the Treasure Hunt provides a unique opportunity to explore and examine the powerful impact that contemporary art has when juxtaposed in a traditional setting.

The visit begins in Florence as Wilson receives the keys to the city from Mayor Dario Nardella. ART of the Treasure Hunt will continue throughout Tuscany as we visit seven of the premier wineries of Chianti Classico and embark on a “treasure hunt” for art placed within them. Seven Tuscan wineries will place contemporary art from galleries across Europe throughout their properties. The exact location within each of the wineries has been carefully chosen in order to highlight the powerful combination between each setting and the artwork. This affords the visitor the chance to not only appraise and see the work in a different light but also to reassess the impact and drama that the immediate surrounding has on the work. Your participation in ART of the Treasure Hunt will directly support The Watermill Center and Robert Wilson’s vision of providing a unique environment for a global community of emerging and established artists and thinkers to gather and explore new ideas together.

Isaac Julien (b. 1960, London) participates of ART of the Treasure Hunt alongside contemporary artists Anselm Kiefer, Heinz Mack, Mark Handforth, Lara Favaretto, Massimo Listi, Bruno Bralfperr, Giulia Pistecelli, and Makhout Bakshir. Julien will be showing at Borgo San Felice – one of the most respected names in Chianti Classico, and part of a large winery with vineyards in different parts of Tuscany. The artist will be showing his video projection, Stones against Diamonds, which was filmed in Iceland, as well as large format photographic works belonging to his series Ten Thousand Waves (2010) and Western Union (2007). In addition, on July 1st, Julien will be in conversation with Robert Wilson at the Palazzo Strozzi. The master talk will be mediated by Kasia Redzisz, chief curator of Tate Liverpool.

(cont.) Saturday, July 2 Palio Di SienaDepart Hotel Borgo San Felice for Palio di Siena (approx. 30 minute drive).

The Palio horse race is held twice each year in Siena’s Piazza del Campo. The first race takes place on July 2 and the second on August 16. Ten horses and riders race bareback, dressed in the vibrant colors of their contrade, or home allegiance. The winner is awarded a banner of painted silk, or palio, which is hand-painted by a different artist for each race. The Palio will be viewed from a private apartment overlooking the Piazza at the starting and finishing point of the race. A historic pageant (approx. 2.5 hours) will take place in the Piazza before the race (approx. 5 minutes). Those who wish to see the pageant will depart Hotel Borgo San Felice at 16:00. Those who wish to see only the race will depart Hotel Borgo San Felice at 17:00. The Palio oficially begins at 19:00.

Fèlsina

Following il Palio, enjoy a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” dinner on the lawns of Fèlsina. Situated in the hills northeast of Siena in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the winery was built around a Medieval courtyard and boasts a wonderful cantina. In Roman times, Fèlsina—which means “hosting pilgrims”— was part of the pilgrim route Via Francigena leading to Rome. In 1730, Fèlsina became a cellar and in 2016, the winery celebrates 50 years of the Poggiali family. Each year, the winery produces between 480,000-520,000 bottles of wine. Fèlsina’s wines are frequently in the 90 points and above category. The Wine Enthusiast awarded the winery 95 points for the 2010 Colonia Gran Riserva, 94 points for the 2012 Rancia Riserva Sangiovese and 92 points for the 2013 Berardenga Red. James Suckling awarded the winery 95 points for the 2012 Fèlsina Chianti Classico.

The theme of the art placed at Fèlsina is let there be light. Mark Handforth, an American artist represented by Torino’s Galleria Franco Noero, will create two site-specific works—one outdoor sculpture and one light sculpture—at Fèlsina. Also placed at the winery will be La Traviata, a new work by Robert Wilson to be presented at Salone de Mobile Milano in April 2016. Chef Giuseppe Iannotti, of the one Michelin-starred restaurant Kresios in Naples and consultancy in Barcelona, will prepare dinner at Fèlsina.

Wilson’s drawings, paintings and sculptures have been presented around the world in hundreds of solo and group showings, and his works are held in private collections and museums throughout the world.

Wilson has been honored with numerous awards for excellence, including a Pulitzer Prize nomination, two Premio Ubu awards, the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale, and an Olivier Award. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as the German Academy of the Arts.
